Goodbye Mabior Chol

Say Nank goes down in a final - You can play Noah as basically a ruck rover because Dave can cover his role. In 2017 we really had no option. Only one ruck, one tall forward and a settled defence.

What I think people are missing is that if Nank were to be injured in game, having Chol there doesn't actually fix the problem. We'll still end up playing Noah in the ruck.

As a ruckman, Chol is a great forward.

I think Chol has forced our hand - it will have to be a combo of Balta and others providing Nank a chop out. We would be playing one short if not based on that effort.

I suspect it will be a Richmond V Geelong or Brisbane GF.

Both are thin on ruckmen.

I wish Wiley Buzza still played for Geelong.

I think your'e right,

however, maybe just maybe, his role was to keep Talia engaged (and perhaps staring at his back was an engagement technique he learned at Yeronga?)

I know im clutching at nano-technology straws,

but you know how the only stat that matters in our forward line is W (see George Castagne, when did he kick the 50% of set shots again? I must have been in the dunny)

and we've played 2 ruckmen all year.

maybe they will overlook the run. they do it with racehorses.

Let's face it guys. With CCJ persona non grata, if Nank goes down we are stuffed so the 1 ruckman /2 ruckman scenario is pretty much moot.

However if I was going to pick one tiger player to play a Shane Ellen or Paul Dear role in a grand final when thrown a lefty field opportunity it would be Balta!!

I think you have to play Chol in the first final. If he has a mare then its all over for him for 2020. Its a game RFC can afford to cross their fingers and hope. If it doesn't work again then you go the Grigg special using Caddy. With Astbury back you could use Balta but its a very good back six and the Finals sides have more than enough fire power to keep all our guys accountable.

Depends on match ups but agree with most of your post there lamby.

Losing Nank in a final would be catastrophic without another tall.

Madness to even consider allowing a Jack, Lynch, Caddy or even more madness your ‘rolls Royce’ in Dusty.

Mabs had 3 disposals (3 kicks) for the game. 1 Mark. 2 HO. 1 goal.

You can’t possibly keep him in for The final. An easy out for the incoming Lynch.
agree. His ruck work was far less impressive. His worth is still there as a forward for the future

It was disappointing. We know he’s better than that, we’ve seen it. Unfortunately we can’t just select him and hope it’s one of his good days in a final. He’s not reliable in that way.

Whilst compiling centre bounce stats I thought I'd take a look at Chol's input. I really want to try and be impartial and look for the positives as well as the negatives. To me it was clear he under-performed badly in the first half playing solely as a deep forward and I could sense some real anger in Hardwick's half time interview. In the 2nd half he played more up the ground, particularly from midway through the 3rd. Thought he performed marginally better, quarter 3 was his bestm and had some influence on a couple of occasions but still too much behind his man and eventually looking quite disinterested ( does he get too tired too quickly?). I really don't know where we go from here. We ended up playing the one key tall forward anyway.

Q1
Behind his man - no impact on contest
Behind his man - no impact on contest
Behind his man - pushed his opponent in the side - no impact on contest
Rucked at centre bounce - to his credit he quickly went forward and almost marked 30m out
Behind much smaller opponent - another defender punched over the top
Side by side with Himmelberg but outmarked by Himmelberg
In front man on man with much smaller opponent (Kelly), outjudged and outmarked by Kelly
Looked to find body contact instead of run at the incoming ball and ended up short of its landing spot, opponent (OBrien) gets in front - Chol gets indiscriminate handball - goes out of bounds
Q2
Behind his man, man-handled, both go to ground, ball goes over the back of pack, results in eventual Dusty goal.
In front but other defender chopped it out coming across the front
Behind his man, Rewiwoldt punched over the top
Behind but used his body well to nudge out then dopped the easy mark
Against small opponent (Scholl), misjudges leap and barely gets a finger on it
In ruck, no impact
Off last 5 minutes
Q3
Leads into space, beautiful pass by Reiwoldt. Goal to Chol
Behind his man, gets one hand on it, through for a behind
Double-teamed, over the back, Talia clears
Boundary ruck v OBrien & wins tap & pressures well for a Tiger clearance
Rucks ball-up, loses, then just sits of pack in no mans land for next couple of plays
Loose in middle of ground behind Reiwoldt contest & wins ball & kicks long inside 50
Q4
In front but pushed out of way, still brings it to ground & advantage but Rioli turns it over
Behind his man - no impact on contest
Couple of ruck contests - no real impact
Tries to mark over the back of O'Brien - without really tying to jump - O'Brien wins
Outbodies OBrien but drops easy mark, then just stands around whilst OBrien goes forward and part of the score assist that creates a goal
Behind his man in contest but does punch it to ground but Adelaide clear
Behind O Brien, ball comes to ground, O Brien handballs to teammate
Boundary ruck against OBrien. Well behind OBrien who takes the ball out of ruck & handballs to teammate
Boundary ruck against OBrien. Obrien clear win & tap to teammate

I wouldn't be giving him a game based on last night. We will play the Lions or the Power - neither provide a ruck opponent that really provides much risk of dominating us. Id feel pretty comfortable with going in with just Toby & using Balta as the back up. With Lynch down forward i dont think Chol adds much there either. Last night was the perfect game for him to show his strengths and he didnt take it. Finals is all about being clutch - would prefer Caddy get a game, he understood the moment yesterday, was desperate to prove him game

Wouldn’t be underrating the Lions or Port rucks. Both have two tall options.
We can’t go in with just Nank & an undersized option.

Lions have the returning Martin is a decent ruck & Port have ‘lendmeaham’ as well.

Don't think we have a choice. Chol plays as if he's under-sized. I think we're just going to need to trust our system as we did against Geelong where we lost clearances 32 to 16. At least we'll hopefully have Lynch back.

Not sustainable ( in my view ) in finals but the backline now with Astbury would be hard to kick a winning score.
But you keep putting the backline under constant pressure and a player has a night out ‘ like USA’ did , no backline, as good as it is can stop that dominance. My view.
