Golf

Funny one this LIV.

Parts of it I really like. There’s always something going on, no boring breaks in play as the last groups finish up.

Party hole has a place, adds great atmosphere, but there really is no need to throw your drinks onto the course when something exciting happens. Totally unnecessary.

Players seem to enjoy being out there which is a nice change from the usual grind they make it seem on the PGA Tour.

The concept has merit, would make lesser tournaments more interesting. But goes without saying that you don’t want to see this style of golf at majors or higher profile events.

Mark Hensby having a great start to his over 50's career on the Champs tour. He was a seriously good golfer in the early 2000's. Not sure what happened to him but perhaps he will have a great senior career.

Silly format LIV. Teams mean f all. The music lessens the intensity. Comes across as a big outdoor *smile* up with a bit of hit and giggle thrown in. You’ve got players all over the place finishing up etc etc.

Gooch was trying to close out on 18 whilst Lahiri was on the 1st with a moderate crowd watching and Reed was on 16 (I think) with nobody out there either. Where do you go on course if three or four guys are battling it out on three or four different holes all over the course ?

Lucky for LIV the winner finished on 18 where everyone was watching. Would’ve been bad if Lahiri won in front of stuff all.

And one final thing, that English commentator was as annoying as all hell with his endless exaggeration and bs. Absolute knob !!!

Have had mates at the Liv event, they reckon it’s unreal. Talking about rolling the start date back closer to gather round next year so it starts on the Tuesday after gather round leaves. Could be a combined ticket/ accomodation package option with the AFL.

I'm up this late because I had to watch the AFL/VFL games that mattered to me, along with patches of LIV too, before I finally got back to watching the Handa Japanese Championship on delay on Kayo. Will make my comments on LIV later today perhaps, but suffice to say, I really wanted to escape all the sensory overload and just watch some genuine golf, without all the BS razzamattazz.

So, of course, finished watching Lucas Herbert win the HJC which was great but it went to a lengthy two-hole play-off. Hence keeping me up too late! Great win by Herbie who always looked the best player until last 5/6 holes where he did his best to blow it by going defensive and having to make several testy putts. Then stuffed the Par 5 16th and almost threw it away. Luck favored him in the end with an extremely fortunate drop on final play-off hole. The Canadian, Cockerill, whom he beat, really was unfortunate; felt sorry for him, wife just had a baby.

Just thought I'd mention on here as I was surprised Herbie's fans seemed not to have noticed. Will move him into the world's top 50 too (too late for the Masters though, so old farts Lyle and Mize could dawdle around!).

Any type of event that brings out a world class field is going to be a success down under, as we are that starved of a half decent event any golf fan will support it

I recorded it to watch today but you’ve given the result so I say…..

GO HEBERTO !!!

Sorry, mate. I know the problem well. Sometimes have to make sure I avoid phone notifications, news services and papers; just to avoid spoilers for events I really want to catch up later, especially hard with overnight sports for us.

Add PRE to that list. It's still worth a look though. Have a look at Cockerill's bunker shot on final regular hole, then his putt on first play-off hole.*
It has struck me that Herbie does have all the golf skills/attributes for success - long driving, reasonably good wedges/approach shots and strong putting. A good player to watch because he sure moves along. But I just wonder if he's a little too nonchalant at times. But probably most would say he has a great attitude too.

I think he's confident there's going to be plenty of $$$ in the bank by the time he's done!

* Weird feature of top Jap tournaments is that they were going to play 18th x 3 times for the play-off. If still undecided, they shift the hole to another spot, then go again. Apparently common practice there.

I watched it. Heberto’s short game is fantastic. His swing is a bit loose sometimes off the tee, but no worse than a lot of others. Bendigo wins again.

Shotgun start is really annoying ie what does the leaderboard actually mean when you’ve got different guys going off on different parts of the course.

And does anyone really give a *smile* about these corny teams and their cheesy names and logos ? Who cares.

LIV is very junky and disjointed.
Yea I reckon the teams aspect is trying too hard to try create some separation, I liked the party hole , the music DJ and fanfare was quite envious tbh as I do go to live golf in melb

I reckon Augusta would've suited him, especially coming of a T16 in the World Match Play in his previous tournament.

U can tell us later man, be cool to know who you're bragging about :eyes

Just to wrap this up for those interested, was an absolutely amazing event.

Unquestionably the best golf event I've ever been to from the point of view of event management and fan experience. The players were clearly happy to be there and very relaxed, and the fan/player interaction was a standout.

In terms of the golf, I found the shotgun start worked really well from a spectator point of view on the second and third day when the groups were spread, not so much when they were selected in marquee groups day one. Day 1 was a day to stake out a spot on a couple of holes and watch groups come through as following them was very difficult, but once the field spread day 2 and 3 was easy to wander around and did multiple holes with the likes of Smith, Mickelson, Johnson, DeChambeau and had great views of them all.
The shotgun start definitely makes it easier to watch big names because they are all out together, not split like a normal tournament. Had a spot in hospitality and barely used it at all once golf was on, much more fun out on the course.

The conclusion is certainly different with players all over the course so you rely more on the scoreboards and have to take some punts about where you watch. If you got a situation where there were multiple players contending all over the course I can see how it would be very exciting but perhaps a little frustrating as well.

The music plays at every tee and green all day, not really my bag but after 10 minutes you don't really notice it anyway. Ditto the party hole (named TBR Hole after I birdied it in the pro am), didn't even go over there as it's not my thing, hate it at Phoenix as well, but clearly a lot of fun for lots of people.

On the Pro Am, all I can say is if you love golf then take the chance to do this one day if you can. It might cost you a house deposit and you might have to lie about that to your wife, but it is an amazing experience that is well worth it if you have the means.
I was really lucky with the 2 players I drew, 9 holes with each and both were absolute gentlemen. One had been to the AFL on the weekend and on discovering my background spent 3 holes asking non stop questions about the game. They were both very generous with advice and both said hello all three days of the tournament on spotting me in the gallery, and invited me inside the ropes to walk a hole on the last day which was an amazing experience to see the crowd from a players perspective. My son caddied for me and one player insisted he play the last two holes of the day as well which he was thrilled with. the Throw in getting to meet all the other players and it was a great day.

As for the golf, no official scoring took place but like an under 10 at footy I couldn't resist. Some very generous tees and much more friendly pins allowed me to mix a couple of birdies with a few bogeys and pars, didn't disgrace myself and wouldn't have been last in the field on Day 1, in fact I could have made the Rippers better!

Word on the street is the Grange is locked in for next year, with an option for 2 after that, and they are looking at a Sydney and Brisbane event next year as well so save your pennies and get involved if you can! Unfortunately it seems Melbourne are still stuck in the PGA Tour hold.

Cheers TBR. Very interesting synopsis.

I've spoken to quite a few who went, and all said much the same as you. All had a great time. As a result of your experience are you now more likely to watch more LIV golf on tv, or do you think it's one of those things where the live viewing far exceeds the televised one ?

Here’s how we do it at my club. (Couldn’t fit the THIRD rake left lying against the wall of the bunker into the picture.)

Nice sand. Looks a little like the first at Kew looking back from green,
