Golf

min woo can win this.
a prodigious talent.
I spruiked his talent quite a while back, AA, but really doubt he can win it. However, an excellent effort so far, and other Aussies too. Fantastic to see, after staying up far too late watching the catch-up rounds following the suspension of play, 3 Aussies within 5 shots of the leader after Rd. 2: MWL, Cam Davis and JDay.
Plus Uncle Adam Scott and 'Jesus' Baddeley (with the hippie hair and 6 kids) even made the cut - just!

Don't think MWL can/will win because although he has improved his weaknesses - approach shots and putting - still unlikely to be good enough when the pressure really comes on on moving day and in the final rd. But, he's tracking well. He's also improved his course management - possibly changed caddies might have helped too. He's fortunate he hits it so long that he can drive with an iron on many of these holes and avoid the high risk, although still misees too many fairways considering. It was noticeable he was out-driving his promising young US playing partners with his irons even when they were hitting 3 woods or driver at times!

Would love to see JDay win it and he has the experience to perhaps launch a bid but is his body able to stand up and perform competitively for another 2 tough rds? Scheffler looks the most likely winner, of course. In the box seat with no Rahm or Rory around.

But great opportunities here for the these Aussies where lots of the big names have crashed out. Would be great for Cam Davis to score a huge win; has been struggling to make cuts recent times. But again, is he consistent enough - keeps finding trouble and blowing shots, worse than MWL usually. But Min losing shots or failing to take opportunities at the end of each round is a poor sign.

Anyway, good luck to all our guys. (y)

Back on the domestic front, anyone played any courses worth visiting on the drive from Melbourne to Adelaide?

Heading over for the LIV event in April and considering whether to drive or fly. I'm playing in the pro-am so would like to play a few rounds in the lead up so I don't embarrass myself.

Will be there for gather round so have a week to play in Adelaide, thinking it might be nice to find a couple of hidden gems out there if they exist and stop a couple of days on the drive over for a hit.
Comealla just out of Mildura is a ripper, excellent greens , Horsham is a bit of a country gem , it’s on a sand base, Warrnambool is good , Victor Harbours also good , great opening hole .

So this “ new” handicap system is simply ludicrous.

I was on +3 and my last 5 scores are 35, 33, 32, 27 and 36, now I’m on +4 and today I’m playing Rosebud ( the boss’s course) and he kindly just sent me a text saying I’m of +5 today , I may as well just buy the first round before we tee off . I know it’s just the way it is however , I’m not a “plus” marker the system makes golfers seem better then they are , ffs even Redford plays of 19 …..to me a scratch marker should be able to win ivo’s or compete well at pro am level , + 4 should be looking for a caddy to head to Q school. Just had a look at my last 20 , there is a 6 under, a 5 under ,2 4 unders , 2 3 under and obviously another 14 varied scores , now to me thats nowhere near a +4 handicap, Rant over, yes I’m not happy having F17F9809-7CD0-4393-B3EA-876E4924DD4C.jpegto give the boss a 7 marker 12 shots ;)

Yeh this new system is confusing. But that's a hell of a decent golf game you must have.

My last 20 comp games include rounds from 2016. You'd be giving me 14 shots.

Last 5 games include 4 at all of The National courses. The hardest rated of those was Long Island, slope rating of 132!!! I reckon it was the easiest (maybe Gunna easier).

Not sure how they work out these slope ratings.

14 pffft I’ll give you 5 ;) .

The slope rating of courses dosent make sense , my old country course that’s about 6000 metres and has a handful of bunkers ,rates the same as playing of the blues on the old course .

I’d say Gunna is clear easiest , Long Island definitely next and Moonah and Old are not to far apart , especially if Moonah‘s rough is up which it hopefully will be for the TPS event in a couple of weeks.

Just on the TPS event , the club has over 3000 members yet can’t get enough volunteers to help out with a professional event , yet last weekend I went back for my old tracks annual , members/volunteers everywhere , blokes driving around in their own utes as drink carts , people making food , cooking bbq’s etc , lot to be said about the old country courses over Club Entitled

Whats your fave of the National courses ?

The Old is simply brilliant- just a pleasure to play. Although I played it on 13th January with a bit of wind and had 21 points.......I did have 38 points there once which I am very proud of. I don't hit it straight enough of f the tee for The Old.

Moonah is also fun although a brutal finish when playing into the wind. I always struggle there oiver the last 6 holes.

Gunnamatta is easy, easiest driving course you could play and driving is probably one of the better aspects of my game. If you can get it off the tee its the easiest of the lot by 8 shops I reckon. Long Island is a bit boring in a way.

Those Nash members there are a pack of entitled *smile* in general I reckon. Divots on fairways and pitch marks on greens everywhere. Not surprised they are not interested in volunteering. I'm the same, grew up on a country course (Riverina area) and loved it. Members were in general a great bunch. I loved playing on a Saturday.

Thanks Mr B, much appreciated. Looks like a road trip. In awe of your handicap as well!

Not 100% sure, but I thought I heard the commentators today mention that his sister is Min Jee Lee, who plays on the LPGA tour.

Yep, Min Woo is indeed the brother of Min Jee Lee.

Well done to Wade Ormsby just winning in Thailand, on the Asian tour. Won it with a birdy first hole of the playoff.

Tend to agree Leon Spinks. He was a bit ratty coming in today. Might not be his time just yet for an event as big as this. Dunno. He seems to have a good feel for the greens though - great long putting today.

Think the Cheff may be cooking something up for tomorrow. Hard to beat.

Rai, the Wolverhampton lad gets an ace. Go the Wolves !

How bad is Morikawa’s putting. Criminal to watch. Such a good ball striker. If he could putt decently, regularly, he’d go close to being number 1. Maybe just a bit more distance off the tee as well. Has everything else covered.

Has Catweazel got something up his sleeve ? Too far back I think.

Yer, but MWL actually exceeded my expectations - brilliant play on that course in this company for such a relatively young, green player who missed the cut by a long way at the previous tournament. But he did fall away at the end ... again. Looks really worried by the 17th and it was as benign, like the whole course after an inch of overnight rain, as it ever will be. Then stuffed the 18th. Also can't take advantage of par 5 16th. I think he may have faltered after looking at the leader-board and seeing he was on top - the drop-off occurred from that point. Putting was mostly strong though.

Yes, expect Cheff will be hard to knock off - he finds some trouble at times, but is damn good at escaping too. Someone may jump up and surprise everyone though. Anybody's tournament for the taking - including one of the Aussies - but will need to play out of their skin and get a heap of luck. Agree with your comments on Mori and Cantwell. Fleetwood or IM possibles to finally win a big one - good putters/short games and in form?

Love this course though, nearly as much as Augusta.

Imploded. Thought that might happen. Especially on a course like this with so many water hazards. You often see young guys or long-odds guys have sensational 3rd rounds, lead or get close to the lead, only to fall away under the heat of the 4th round. In the end, it was only 2 really bad holes - the 4th and 11th - that brought him undone i suppose if you wanna put a positive spin on it.

He’ll be better for it. He’s a pretty confident guy, in the mould of Jason Day if you listen to his interviews.

The Cheff is a very very tough cookie.

Note: ironically, was watching the 2017 Australian Amateur last week on tv. Matias Sanchez beats Min Woo Lee 1 up over 36 holes. Great match. Field included Robert Macintyre, Zach Murray, Harrison Endycott. Sanchez is a guy to keep a quiet eye on. Can seriously play. Great swing.
