General Trade Discussion 2022

This Jack Bowes salary dump stinks to high heaven. In 2019 Bowes was asked to sign a new back-ended contract. The Suns then go cap in hand to the AFL and are given a priority pick for the 2019 draft and another mid, first round pick for 2020.
The Suns select Rowell & Anderson at 1 & 2 in the 2019 AFL draft, Bowes gets shunted down back, gets injured as well as falling out of favour.
The Suns are then given the go ahead to shaft him by being allowed to do a salary dump.

What would be the chances of Richmond getting the same preferential treatment? For example, lets say Castagna had helped out Richmond by signing a new back-ended contract. He falls out of favour, Richmond have salary cap problems and ask the AFL whether they can do a salary dump.
We all know what the AFL would say, and the ridicule that Richmond would cop from the media.

He likely will be though. Nearly 28 at the start of next season. Missed a lot of football over the last 3 years (obviously for various reasons, injury and the drug issue) but those reasons will certainly impact on trade value.
4 seasons worth of a game-breaking, proven finals performer bona-fide star whose name is Rioli, for a nothing draft pick?

Mate where do I sign?

The rules were made clear to all clubs before the trade period started. We could have made an offer to Bowes but decided not to. If it's such a good deal, I wonder why we didn't.
You’ve gotta get your TPP in order and discussions going with the player well in advance though is Chimpley’s point.

Trade radio the other week mentioned a number of clubs are pissed off.

All clubs should be pissed off because it undermines how player payments and list management are conducted. But the conspiratorial idea that Geelong had prior knowledge of Bowes because Hocking worked in the AFL 12 months prior is difficult to believe.

It was more interesting that Brad Scott rubber stamped the salary dump rules then jumped ship to Essendon and suddenly they were trying to get Bowes to sign.

There is also no doubt that the lure of Geelong and the surf coast lifestyle compared to Melbourne is becoming more and more a factor. It is a society trend, the move to rural and semi rural areas is quite large.
Living in torquay and being an afl footballer is pretty enticing
Wait til players realise Byron's less than an hour from Metricon.

Why ?

Why didn't we do it?
Because we are no way in hellway going to put Tanner Bruhn on a four year contract for $2.2-2.4M to be playing alongside RCD, Dow and Martyn as the Reserves Captain, that's just ridiculous.

There's Talls coming out of contract in that time period who we could likely be looking at right now and bringing in after Jack goes end of 2023 or the following year.

Let's not pretend Jack had heaps of tall help up forward before Lynch came, he got a crook of average talls to play with.

Apart from Jack at 193cm, the 2017 Premiership was won with a 187cm Martin, 187cm Townsend and Caddy at 186cm as the 'talls' up forward.

I'm pretty sure Lynch could handle it if required with Dusty, Cumberland, Ryan and/or Bauer might come through along with the great smalls, Shai and MJ for a year or two until we get who we want.

The King brothers probably won't want to stay at their no-hope clubs for much longer, Tom De Koning out of contract end of 2023, Harrison Jones 2023, Cox 2023, Hind 2023, Naughton 2024, Jamarra 2024, Fogarty 2023 and that's just a few I can name, there's probably more talls who could want a trade out and want to come to us.

Yes the rules were made clear at that time. Unfortunately for the other clubs Geelong likely had prior knowledge and a substantial head start. Bowes had to make the call on the club and Geelong would have been in to him for ages before the other clubs even knew what was happening. They would have been able to manage their salary cap with the knowledge this was happening. The 17 other clubs were caught unawares.

Pick 7 is a massive prize and they got a massive head start on the competition.

Let’s hope their pick 7 is a dud.
Watching Geelong wear that double fail would be a joy to behold.

Byron's a hell hole. Much better spots along that piece of coast. Still your point is solid.
I have mixed emotions about Byron. It's a place I've loved for two decades, but it's not what it was.

If you were a very well paid fit young athlete there are worse places, and yeah, more about the climate and beauty of the general area.

It means we didn't want to let Soldo go but if we want Hopper we relented and he is going to be part of the deal. That's the information I've got. We are hearing there's five on the bench next year and likely everyone will be going with a second ruck, so we wanted to keep him for that role.

But if we want Hopper, the big Doldo is unfortunately going to be part of the deal.

I don't really wont Soldo to be part of the deal, but if that's what it takes, we can pick up the best available state league ruckman.

Even with 5 on the bench and that meaning we can play two rucks that wouldn't mean we will go with Nankervis and Soldo

The 5th could be a versatile tall like Miller. Gives more options
