Well this has been quite a thread.
I attempted to watch on Kayo, it dropped out a few times and when it dropped out again (claiming some sort of error) early in the last I was supposed to be in an online catch up with friends so gave up. Looks like I didn't want to see the last quarter anyway.
First thing I will say is what a game. It was a cracker. Massive pressure from both sides. We came back a few times, maybe not deserved but pretty bloody good with such an inexperienced side.
A number of players down that's for sure. Eggy seems a little off AFL level but I reckon persist. Stacky and Rioli really need to find some form. No idea what is wrong with Castagna, has credits, but is starting to run out.
As is often the case when we get beaten, we lost it in the centre. I am less convinced by the idea we can lose it in the centre, rely on scoring from rebounds and still win against genuinely good teams. Apart from anything else you just can't let the opposition get good clearances. We need to get better in the middle.
The defence were under siege, could have been better, too many easy crumbed goals to Port, but they need to be less under siege. The defence will be back, had a slightly off night and combined with being under siege we let too many goals through.
That said, for all that Port were genuinely very good, if I was Port I would be seriously worried about how much their defence let through. Teams who win Grand Finals do not let their opposition score that many times given our low number of inside 50s. That is precisely the sort of defensive performance which does not survive finals.
With a few players back and not allowing Port such clean and easy clearances from the middle I reckon we would beat them.
Plus, we will learn from the loss, I doubt they will learn from the win.
