One word: relief.
Clearly not a good effort. I don't think Richmond were disinterested, just a bit off. Not dissimilar to Port in some ways. For all that Port beat us fair and square, that was one hell of a game, fast and furious. The prospect of us, the reigning premiers, coming up against last year's wooden spooners might have been a bit of a let down after the Port game.
Some good signs from Markov, I reckon he should hold his place.
Castagna has a lot of credit but I reckon he has pretty much spent it all, Rioli the same.
Chol had a bad night, didn't seem to be able to leap in the ruck and was never in the right place to mark. I figure he has been good enough recently to hold his place.
Soldo would be on very thin ice, you would have to favour Nank.
Cotchin was a very welcome addition, geez at times I don't know how we can win without him.
Dusty a little quiet, almost a bit average which is well under par for him. He does seem to just create space around him when he gets it though.
Not sure what to do about Stack. Seems to get a bit of the ball but can't create at the moment. I suspect they will persist but he really needs to get it together.
2 absolutely woeful umpiring decisions tonight: no 50 for Grimes when poked in the eye well after taking a mark; Riewoldt whacked across the face, blood streaming from his nose and a cut near the eye, caused by an opposition player, apparently does not get you a free kick when you are Jack Riewold. Needless to say neither of these got any outrage from the commentariat. They would have been jumping out of the box for those if we were one of their favoured teams.
Gold Coast clearly an improved team. They played well and their defensive strategy was good. How many intercept marks did they take? Some of this was due to our deficiencies in getting the ball inside 50, but a fair bit of it was their positioning and reading of the play.
Richmond have many things to work on but 2 stand out from tonight:
1) Clearances from the middle: the number of times there would be no clean possession in the middle and the ball was bouncing around, players competing for it, lots of tackling and a Gold Coast player would grab it and clear it their way. We have to get better at this.
2) Delivery inside 50: we need to get it in to better positions, we need to be spreading opposition defences, we also need more of the manic forward pressure which has dropped off.
This was not a game to take the points and burn the tape. This was a game to take the points and take a serious look at how we can combat the well set up defence we saw tonight and to work on the centre clearances.
