Game day thread Tiges vs Saints - round 22 2023

That was not fun at all.

Firstly, credit to StKilda, when they can play with little pressure on them they look good. StKilda were running all day, they were able to pass to their team mates and there was always a team mate to pass to. Lots of run and it is very hard to stop when a team can cleanly take the ball down the ground at speed.

So, let's get on to Richmond, this was not pretty.

I feel like I make the same points week after week, but, here goes:

We try to stream down the ground going forward, but the opposition just know we are going to inevitably f**ck up at least one pass. It will go to the feet of our team mate. A handball above our team mate. Pick out an opposition player. These things happen time and time again, the opposition know it will happen and are ready to pounce, turn it over and score.

We pass to stationary targets, and invite an intercept. This problem is two-fold. Firstly why are we kicking to a stationary player and, if we are going to do this, at least kick it low and direct. Secondly, why is the player we are kicking to stationary? Why aren't they on the move?

Allied to the above, the forward line is so static, we just don't separate the defence and delivery into the forward line is a mess.

Passing to players, especially shorter players, who are outnumbered - what's with this. How many times did they pass to Baker who had 1 or more opponents on him? Geez, he's great, but he is 5'9" so passing to him when he has opponents about 6" taller right next to him, and passing direct to to Baker so he can't run to the ball, it makes no sense at all. This happens not just with Baker, but we pass to smaller players with tall opponents on them all the time, and we don't pass to their advantage, we pass it direct to where they are. Such a stupid piece of play.

We no longer apply enough pressure. The opposition are able to get payers free and overlap. Clean possessions to the opposition are a feature.

Not sure the coach can do much when we seem to lack skills, but there are some things which could be tried. FFS why aren't our forwards being told to present more, why do we leave great spaces of the ground open? There needs to be some better strategies implemented.

The umpiring was woeful as usual. Bauer gets pushed in the back taking a mark, no free. StKilda player gets touched and it is a free. I was behind the goals and watched as Jack's arm was held behind him in a marking contest, umpire right there, no free. Adjudication of the game is well below what it should be for the highest level of the game. I know some accept this standard, but I reckon it should be better. Players get criticised for bad performances, the umpiring is laughable.

Bothers me that we are repeating 2021. Out of contention and given up. Poor chasing, poor tackling, murdered in the midfield, sloppy skills.

Hard to fault our winning culture. But when we are losing, seems our culture is lacking.

Perhaps this a product of 3 premierships and the older group can't achieve much more. But the finish to 2021 and now 2023 is embarrassing.

Oh, and the umpires can go and get *smile*!

Totally disgusted with that (non)effort today.
Was nothing but a practice match for the Aints.
We made a pile of crap team look good.

No effort, no pressure, sloppy disposals, allowing opponents twenty and thirty yards clear space.
A totally insipid effort.

The worst of it, aside from the lack of self-respect, was what they did to their team mates.
Bauer, Coulthard, Young and Mansell are all playing for their future and are being hung out to dry by their team mates.
Poor Jack has battled most of the year as an old, short sole forward and gets burnt ALL the bloody time by his team mates.

Not to mention Mini, who if he had any thoughts of getting the coaching gig, must after today resign himself to missing out.
We have had a chance to play finals - you know WIN as a professional athlete paid big money - but apparently it's not worth it cos we won't get far in the finals.

Daniel Rioli let it out of the bag on Yokay by saying we are looking forward to next year.

I was going to come down from the country for Cotchins last home game next week to pay my respects to a champion but now can't be bothered if thats the sort of effort they're going to give us supporters.

If they are not going to make a full effort for themselves then why would they do it for Cotchin.

To me they are playing like blokes that have won 3 flags and done enough. Almost going out with an attitude of just be happy we gave you 3 flags so if we can't get to that next contest so be it. We have paid our dues.

We know the usual suspects who played well and I'm sure they have been covered in most posts, so ill just go straight to the ones who didn't perform. Before I do a special shout out to Thompson Dow, who played well, had 21 disposals at 76% DE and took 6 marks. He didn't panic zig-zagged through traffic, keep playing him for the next two games.

I was there today, seriously players have checked out and our game style especially on Marvel is *smile*. Our skills are shizenhousen and on Marvel, it shows up even more.

It didn't matter during our flag years because we were relentless in our attack on the ball and man. Frenetic pressure.

Enough is enough for these two Graham 12 disposals and Pickett 11, neither hit the scoreboard
Macintosh it doesn't matter if he had it 20 times, he just doesn't hurt the opposition with his disposal.

Soldo with 5 disposals. It didn't work last week but hey on the fast track of Marvel let's play the same setup again Nank/Soldo = the same result.

Grimes has been a great servant, in his prime a star but he has fallen off a cliff.

Riewoldt, another champion of our great club. 6 disposals and a goal didn't have a good day at the office.
Personally, I hope he hangs up the boots, turning 35 in a few months.

They must not have seen the Dees game, especially final half. Defence blown apart.
They just showed on First Crack some damning footage of Balta on King. He was a miiiile off King on several occasions.

It felt like many of our players had the cue in the rack today.
I'm not really surprised as it didn't feel like we'd threaten anyone in the finals after the last two weeks.

The selection of Dow probably had a few snr players scratching their heads wondering what the footy department was really trying do as it did say a bit of 'play the kids'.

I wasn't surprised by today's result at all. keep playing the kids.

It has been fairly obvious over the last couple of games or so that the togetherness, support, belief and desire has been missing and we have eighteen individuals on the field instead a team who play for each other. Maybe is is a question of aging and tired players, playing injured or sore or even not trusting a teammate or themselves to deliver the goods at times.

Looks like another flogging. Unless we can upgrade the skills this is going to keep happening.
Started saying, or inferring back last year under Dimma but don't think he could ever be, or wanted to be a skills-focused coach. Or not prepared to put the effort in any more. Will get a somewhat easier ride in at GCS with so many high-draft picks to launch with - far more skilled starting list.

That's also why Mini is not the answer - really too much of a Dimma clone. (But, really like the guy - happy to see him stay on as an AC if he wished).

The players love Mini.

They’re sure showing it.
This is why it's so painfully, bloody obvious that you NEVER let the players choose the coach. The club must!
It's not a love-me popularity contest. Of course a lot of players are going to love a soft, easy, "I'm your friend, mate, whatever" style coach.

Flogs just can't give a free to us. They don't care.
They just make sure we don't win or make it require an almost amazing performance. Just note how often a RFC goal, they find a Centre Sq infringement allowing the opp a soft i50 clearance immediately providing the chance for a response goal shot. Sometimes franked with another free for a goal shot e.g. two early ones today - that block at the CS against Soldo (still don't know why ?) and the supposed hold on Crouch after Jack's top mark/goal.

Lots of talk of "lack of skills" in this thread. What absolute nonsense. None of these blokes suffer from a lack of skills. They aren't executing their skills, that's a beast of a different stripe. The question is, why? IMO, the issue is structural. There is upheaval in the first 22. There is upheaval in the footy department. There is, at least, rumblings with the suits. Dimma's gone midseason. Peggy's going. Gale is talked about in other areas. It shows on the ground.

We've lost our structure.

No Lynch. Cotchin retiring, and way off his best. Prestia, Martin and Reiwoldt have been the most skillful players on our list until recently but they are all older and slower. Their sheer ability has seen them keep up with the top flyte for longer than maybe they should have. That's a lot of change in a very short space of time. With no real senior coach in place it must be hard to have a strategy that can rebuild our structure on game day. It shows up very obviously in K-Mac. He was the bellwether of our team structure. He owned "the fat side side" for 5 years. He is having to play outside his zone, and it that is opening us up on the transition. Cotchin and Prestia being 2 yards slower and Martin playing more minutes forward is opening us up through middle. Grimes, Broad and Vlas being a yard off is giving teams more scoring opportunities. It's death by a thousand cuts. Balta and Young are working well but it's hard going. Vlas still reads the play better than anyone and so is still taking those intercept marks, but he and Grimes, and Broad, aren't able to get over and cover when the mids get opened up on the transition.

There is hope.

Balta continues to be a beast. Young is building. His peak is still probably just DtlDave but that's fine with me. Taranto is a great addition to the midfield but needs more help. Bauer was doing the right things. A mobile aerialist we haven't really seen since Richo (McBean?).

So what now?

We need a bullock to replace Cotchin. Who wasn't one, but in the most selfless act of sacrifice I've ever seen in footy he reinvented himself for the team (he wins 2 maybe 3 Brownlows IMO if he stays an outside mid and finisher). Our structure needs to change. Some teams have emulated our Premiership winning ball-attack, forward-momentum style and are now doing it better. We need to be able to take more marks in midfield/wing positions. That is one of the big changes the "stand" abomination, sorry I mean "rule" has taught us. K-Mac has done really well in that area. He's a solid over head mark these days. We need more of that. Pickett might be the man for that job, but he's struggling. But the truth is until the senior job is sorted we can't start to build a new structure. A new name, or Mini if he gets the gig, needs to fix that as the 1st order of business. Essentially that will really look like a rebuild, because we'll need to recruit to fill the places with the right blokes who work in the new structure. And that will take a couple of years, I reckon. Geez I hope we get this right.

WE had our day in the sun & this year just was not what we wanted. The draw against Carlton last minute melt down against Dons ,Llynch out after three games & with Gibcus & Tarrant out all season Tigers were just off the pace & it showed up today. Another factor at a crucial time in the run off into finals our skipper gets three weeks for a moment of madness. Got a very good young list & they will only improve with game time .Roll on 1924.

Dusty has butchered the ball all quarter.
He can't be bothered getting the ball off his boot properly any more. Just slaps it on any old how. Always kicked an occasional clanger; mow it's like 1 in every 3.
Really lets the team down now with missed goals he used to kick; relieves scoreboard pressure on oppo frequently.
