Game day thread Tiges vs Saints - round 22 2023

Cue went into the rack after the Dees flop game!?
Perhaps that was the game where the players realised they don’t have it in them this year. I mean to contend, not just fall into the eight. And for a group that’s won multiple premierships finishing eighth probably doesn’t get them that excited.

No wonder we only recruit flankers.
Our setup is on the flanks. No one in the middle
Yer, funny about that, and one problem Recruit an excess of flankers but keep playing DRioli on an obviously awful ankle injury until he broke down today and had to go off again. Where's duty of care ... or would like to lose him for 4-6 weeks that becomes a season per Lynch and Gibcus.

But here's the rub about all our great HBF selections; none are ready made to play AFL. Just handy VFL. Go figure.

The umpire's pet, it was disgraceful. King should be embarrassed with his antics whenever he had a nail on him. He kicked 6, but 3 from frees.

They just make sure we don't win or make it require an almost amazing performance. Just note how often a RFC goal, they find a Centre Sq infringement allowing the opp a soft i50 clearance immediately providing the chance for a response goal shot. Sometimes franked with another free for a goal shot e.g. two early ones today - that block at the CS against Soldo (still don't know why ?) and the supposed hold on Crouch after Jack's top mark/goal.

It felt like a four goal level of assistance by the umps to half time. The inconsistency is outrageous. I didn’t get to see much of the second half.

We need a coach that places extremely high value on players that can execute a high level of skill by hand and foot. This is the way the game has gone and we have a team of butchers. McQualter has been coaching in a chaos ball era his entire career. Is he capable of making the change? I don't know but evidence in his interim tenure would suggest not.

I really think we need a complete refresh in the coaching ranks. Everyone, particularly the players, seems a bit comfortable at the moment.
YES. That's what I've been saying for quite a while ... even back in '22 under Dimma but some posters resent you for being honest. Besides it's understandable after a 3-flag coach. However, the signs have been blatant for last 2 years+ to me.

We need a whole new approach; new coach; new ideas; some new ACs; new, contemporary/forward looking game-plan. I think Benny realises this too, judging by his initial comments about what RFC is looking for. And his staying on at RFC next year at least, rejecting AFL job. Such a relief.

Prestia a nothing kick turnover and Grimes just too damn slow
I honestly cannot figure out what is going through many of our players' heads any more. FMD - the stupidity of some of the errors is astounding! And totally demeaning to the club, the team, and the great experience most of them have i.e. 3-time flag players. And it's mostly these former star players who are letting the side down often; setting a really poor example along the way to any new blood.

Also, tell me why Dan Rioli was grinning and smiling with the umpire (Q2?) after Sharman was gifted another mystery free for a supposed block - probably against Dan? - that he duly kicked straight over his head for a major. That was a laugh!? We share a joke with umps now for getting reemed? What?

It's not only a disgrace for those reasons above; it's humiliating to themselves.

They just showed on First Crack some damning footage of Balta on King. He was a miiiile off King on several occasions.

Balta loves the one-on-one tussle but surely they reminded Balta that king likes to get on his bike and let me tell you Red, Balta was nowhere to be seen. King marked without any real pressure, just leading into open space.

Well, what they showed on tv fits with that. Just totally lost in space leaving King all by himself a mile away.

Great interceptor, but I don’t think in a pure man to man defensive sense Noah is anything special. Opposition players get off the leash with him on them at times.

Can't blame the coach for terrible disposal. FMD we're like kids at times.
Ok. Right. Then we blame the guys who run our training sessions then. [Are we practising anything useful we can actually transfer to an AFL game that might indicate any improvements?]
And just tell me who are the players responsible to? The paymaster? Us fans/financial supporters?

Pulls a high tackle that was almost impossible to see yet ours are play on
Yes. I know, but Pickett struggles to ever learn. What will it take for him to go low at the hips/torso in a tackle. Sorry, but I just feel he is a very flawed and limited player. When he does do a good thing or two, soon squares it back with another couple of repeat errors. A net loss/no gain.
Been saying it since he was pushed forward. Will never make it as a forward. But Mini cannot see it.

EDIT: it took your comment to be referring to the high Pickett tackle on the near boundary line in Q2 but later realised you might be talking about Balta. Apologies if so. But stlil mean what I say about P's tackling.

Maybe because the game's gone past him but he still hasn't realised yet? Living in the 'good old days'?
I'd say quite a few are. Vloss, Broad. We have 3 flags in 4 years. Too many too soon? Has it developed complacency in some players. We can only build a real hunger again with kids who haven't experienced it?

We’re now 4th in the league for points against. Only WCE, Norf and Hawthorn have let more in.

We have totally lost our desire-ability to defend. It used to be insanely good, now it’s just terrible when we aren’t in possession.

9th for pressure acts. 14th for tackles I50. 13th for tackles.

Our turnovers aren’t helping either. 2nd in the league. Disposal and kicking efficiency ? Don’t go there…..

Dash Kam has to go.

Oh but he runs ... and runs into space and back, ... then runs some more. So where are his fans to tell us/me this all over again? How valuable he is, and how I/we just don't appreciate him because we don't comprehend the game-plan in its huge sophistication. Unfortunately, the game is football, not CC running would you believe!

We found a better young wingman than KMac and blithely allowed the Bummers to pinch him. Will have a long career there.
