Game Day - rnd 16 vs Brions at the Gabba 2023

Even when Lynch is in our forwards don't separate enough, we end up with Lynch and Riewoldt betting double teamed. Not only do we need some KPFs but we also need to take a serious look at the way we set up in the forward line.

DS
We would have lost by 10 goals even with a fully fit Lynch in the side tonight. You just can't win when the oppo waltzes it out of the middle repeatedly and from most around the ground clearances!

I'd say a bit of both.

Nank can get hit outs but often not to advantage. The mids, moreso when we are getting smashed in clearances, aren't running through the area. If you take possession without being on the move you either need to get it out to a team mate who is clear in a big hurry or you will be tackled and stopped. There are problems on both sides of the equation.

DS
Fair analysis - just an overall mess. Maybe it’s easier to be on the move when you know your ruck is probably going to win the hit to advantage.

The lack of intensity in contest/clearance tonight was really hard to understand. It all just seemed too difficult.

Rather sad post.
Sorry if you don't like it. Just calling it as I see/hear it. I just find Richo's commenting on our games really hard to bear. And I have had quite enough of it ... seeing some of those non frees paid either for us or against Brisvegas was just so hard to bear tonight. When you're under the pump, not getting a fair go from the "officials" is even harder to take.

At least Cornes had a go at the "officiating" the other week on PA's behalf. They get nothing like the constant reaming our players cop.

I noticed a couple of clearances that resulted in 25-40m kicks I50 that were seemingly to space. Is that because we have set hot spots we kick to under pressure? Should the forwards have been anticipating these, or why wasn't it working..?

There were also a couple of 25-40m kicks from general play that were intended to be to someone's advantage, but were ultimately intercepted due to imprecise kicking. Is this a talent issue? (Brisbane is part of that equation)

Before the game started, I advocated for more 50m worm burners I50... I'm still on the 50m worm burner train!

I've never placed much emphasis on ruck hit outs. I view them as essentially random and meaningless.

I thought we did pretty well at getting out hands to the ball, but it was on the 2nd or 3rd player (after a tap or handball) waiting in space that Brisbane was waiting for us to target... and they pounced hard on that player in space.

The forward handball game is excellent when it's chaotic and free flowing, but we were using it in more stationary pack-like situations than normal this week (I thought, anyway) so without that breakaway chaotic speed / flow to the forward momentum... it's not only predictable, but it's slow - so the opposition (who has lots of players around and behind the pack) has plenty of time to look at the congested ball slowly tap around and then come towards them with a big, sweeping handball.

The forward handball is special when it's fast and chaotic, but I think in big, ugly packs it's pretty easy to have players waiting for that longer forward handball and they just target intercepting that handball.

Just a few observations, it's hard to see much from the TV

I reckon part of the problem is we kick to a static player and we kick it too high and invite an intercept. It happened way too many times tonight.

Still kicking down the line way too often, making it a 50/50 contest and it got rebounded back more times than not. We do not have the foot skills to pinpoint multiple short passes. The lions' foot skills were spot on, they were pinpointing passes at will.

38 inside 50's, our midfield was obliterated

Before the game started was told that some players were taking cold n flu tablets on the plane. Wouldnt have stopped the lion's rampage but it does explain two things, teams are flat after the bye, and add to this some with the flu and that becomes a double whammy. We looked beyond flat, lethargic.

We made the Brisbane talls look like Americans.

Hope Dusty's knee is fine

Yes, it was an aberration tonight.
From an average of about 65 inside 50s to 38 is way below the median.
If they had a general flu bug, they would not publicise it openly either.
Average these days is about 65 inside 50s per game with a 20 per cent goal conversion.
Straight to the video tape bin.

We just aren't the team we once were.
Injuries to Lynch has bent us over all year.
Short is now the new Prestia play 2 miss 3.
Graham and Ross are 1990 midfielders slow as dog ball's.
Flappers and Pickett are shocking kicks.
The kids are no Where to be seen.
Sampson plays like a scared cat.
Miller has been given opportunities but isnt taken it.
The 5 in 30 is a disaster.
And im shocked Riewoldt and Cotchin are waiting till round 23 to pull the pin.
We aren't West Coast but we haven't got much coming though either.
We need speed and good decision makers.
I can't believe we have cap issues.
Cotchin Riewodlt and Catagna all off the books

I had to get up early for work , during the 3rd quarter thought stuff this and went to bed ,

Doesn’t sound like things got any better reading the comments,

Disappointing but probably a bit of a reality check of where we are at .

Can look to blame whipping boys on the periphery but the bottom line is our midfield was absolutely slaughtered without Dusty & Prestia by a hungry, quality outfit.

That's primarily why we were thrashed.

The writing was on the wall at 1/4 time. LIke you Kiwi, got very sick of watching us get smashed and went to bed to read my latest James Patterson book at 1/2 time.
The team looked very tired and dispirited to my eyes.
No matter what the reason we were done like a dinner and that's that.

Same, but I flicked to the cricket.

Saints got off to a flyer against us, but you could see we were in the game, last night, no signs of that at all.

For a team that's never achieved anything, the carrying on of certain Lions players is embarrassing. And even if you are a world-beater, do it graciously. I hope they never win a f*****g thing.
