Game Day - rnd 16 vs Brions at the Gabba 2023

The forward line is a massive concern. Easily bottom four in the league without Lynch.

Zero pressure. Loose players everywhere.
We were a rabble. Back to worst 2016 performances. Just fell apart, and hardly anyone stood up to provide the leadership to fight back. Game plan is dismal. Footy has gone beyond the basics of our 2017 chaos ball game-plan.

Like kicking it down the line or deep forward ... but we have no-one left who can take a contested mark among the big boys.

Like knocking it or crap-kicking it to an opposition that's ready for it, will take possession then run it past us to kick into their attack, where ... lo and behold they have KPFs who can mark it, or strong bodied mid forwards who can also take a high mark, are strong, break tackles and convert.

We still have Dusty and Bolton, but the Lions have Rayner, Bailey, Charlie and McCarthy. Double the small/mid forward power.

Hmm, you know, I'm sure I saw that we were 12-9 ahead in free kicks at half time,

End of the game, we still have 12 frees.

Did we just go for half a game without a free kick? Did Brisbane seriously go for a whole half without breaking any rules?

I'll admit, Brisbane had no pressure on them, but not only is this ridiculous, it is all too common for Richmond to get no frees for long periods of time.

Anyway, a totally forgettable game. The players just didn't seem to be there, such a woeful effort. They need to get their act together next week as Sydney smacked us last time and the way we played tonight they will do it again.

You need to let go occasionally.

fortunately our key forward jack's form not upsetting anyone
Wasn't sure he was on the ground. Thought he might have been in the outer with a rug over his lap, pouring hot cocoa from a thermoss ,,, and his young off-sider, Miller, was with him but went off to the bar for an extended time after getting sick of the old geyser raving on constantly about, " Well back in my day ..."

I think he was very well paid by RFC in his football career from the outset as the star F/S super athlete player. Which provided him with the opportunities he has franked since finishing his playing career. He wasn't doing it for peanuts ... like Royce Hart did and had his body messed up badly for his efforts.

Sure, I loved him as a Richmond player; maybe my all-time favorite besides Royce and Dusty. And sure, he needs and wants to make a good living like we all want to do, but another guy in the media who cops a lot of flak on here (and usually deserves it) is prepared to say what he thinks bluntly, seems to still be forging a successful media career without being afraid to go into bat for his former club quite unashamedly too. Or just express a strong, critical opinion. Tell me once you have noticed Richo do so, or really go hard defending his former club in his match commentary? It's all softly, softly. Don't rock the boat. Don't say anything by which I can be accused of backing the Tigers.

Richo seems like an apologist for RFC - as if his failure to achieve the greatest of success is a reason to be craven and grovelling. His playing career was admirable. As a commentator, I find him bland and shallow, rarely if ever willing to take a stand on any issue re RFC. During games, he is too timid and weak re events we all see onfield in terms of umpiring travesties or inequities dished out to our players and simply goes with the flow. Another Hamish type.

Just as I type, he's turned up on Ch.7 post-game in Lions scarf and cap. Says it all. Is he still on a retainer from RFC for his promotional work? Give me a break. There's a name for this ... but I'll leave it at that.
Clearly the $$$ has far surpassed any loyalty to RFC. Anything else is just for keeping the money coming in.
Rather sad post.

Anyone having a go at Cumberland needs to widen the lens of all players in that forward line.
He's played 16 games. First game back in a month. Thought he presented well taking 5 marks and kicking a goal. Had 7 disposals.

Now let's compare the others, Clarke who tried hard but didn't use it well. Dropped marks like it was a wet night. DE46%
Jack 6 disposals, 1 mark 0 scoreboard
Ryan 5 disposals, 2 marks 0 scoreboard
Miller 4 disposals, 3 marks 0 scoreboard
Pickett 9 disposals, 1 mark 0 scoreboard
Jack Graham, is having more average games than good. How he escapes scrutiny is beyond me. 11 disposals, 2 tackles, and 1 point.

Cumberland out of the 7 forwards was our best which shows how poor the others were, and Clarke was 2nd even though he turned it over but played with some spark.

From our 7 forwards listed above. 3 tackles between them all. 2 to Graham and 1 to Pickett. It's why I wanted Maurice Junior in, his frenetic pressure and closing the space quickly denies opposition players to waltz the ball out easily. We saw it last week v Saints.

Some other players:
Almost forgot Macintosh, 10 disposals on the wing is just not good enough.
Cotchin had a good game last week but was poor tonight with 14 disposals, 0 clearances, and 2 tackles.

That was an interesting game.

I'm not sure what to make of it, really.

One aspect is our forward handball game was routinely cut short by a well-prepared opposition who understands the way we play. We did alright with the 1st or 2nd possession/tap, but they were often waiting to intercept our attempt to get into space after that. Another aspect that stood out to me was our short kicks I50 seemed to be intercepted more often than usual, and that's usually a more reliable type of entry I50. You generally know what the top teams want to do, but you can't stop them.

I don't think this was a complicated game, which is why it's quite interesting to try and learn from it.

Don't know about that. Swans smashed us earlier in the year. Hawks beat Brisbane 2 games ago and are playing much better now. We need to win 7 of last 8 to realistically make it. If Blues beat Hawks even they'll be above us now on percentage.
Like I said.. we will be 9-8-1 in 3 weeks…

Really? You don't say. Same for nearly two years now. After being virtually a one-man forward team through the Richo era, it was through the transformation into a multi-ponged FL that we turned our fortunes around (JR/Caddy/Butler/DRioli/Castagna etc).

Then we slowly but surely reverted back to another one-man FL dependent on Lynch, as JR steadily declined and we lost Butler and DRioli's repalcement in Higgins, and finally George. In the meantime, we have recruited nothing of comparable quality to generate the quantity of goal needed. I still nurse hope for Cumbo and Clarke but still in development.

The inability of our recruiters to firstly select any quality big-bodied mids, then KPFs has led inevitably to having to give up a heap more draft capital, along with being fooled into gifting JR8 another contract year despite clear signs that the end was nigh in '22. He's been great but one year too many.

Without the LTI Lynch now, the FL is usually a wasteland, relying more on mids or HBFs like Short and DRioli to score the goals. Miller lacks the strength and aggressive confidence of a true KPF. Makeshift - only adequate against average backlines.

Forward line was too static which seems to be the case when we play badly. Players up the ground had nowhere to kick to.

We were so bad in the clearances, looked a lot like the last quarter against Carlton in 2022, just for the whole game this time. When we get smashed in clearances we really get smashed.

Terrible game from Richmond, the only thing we can take from it was the performances of a few in the back line - Broad, Balta and Vlastuin were great but there are limits to what you can do when the opposition are getting easy possessions out of the middle or rebounding and when their players are running back and forth to provide targets.

How much do you put down the clearance issue to Nank rucking against a much taller/bigger ruck? Or is that not massively relevant and it’s really the midfielders we’re losing out to?

Even when Lynch is in our forwards don't separate enough, we end up with Lynch and Riewoldt betting double teamed. Not only do we need some KPFs but we also need to take a serious look at the way we set up in the forward line.

The game was 100% lost in the midfield. We were smashed. On the odd occasion we got out hands on the ball first we fumbled and turned it over. Easily Taranto's worst game. Nank struggles against taller gangly rucks in centre clearance. Our setup seemed all wrong around all clearances. We almost gave up in there at times!

I'd say a bit of both.

Nank can get hit outs but often not to advantage. The mids, moreso when we are getting smashed in clearances, aren't running through the area. If you take possession without being on the move you either need to get it out to a team mate who is clear in a big hurry or you will be tackled and stopped. There are problems on both sides of the equation.

I'm still confident we'll be in a good position to play finals.

This week was an outlier, and coming into this game we had every reason to be confident, so I'll remain cautiously optimistic about the rest of the season.
