Finals Week 1: The acid reflux games.

I've only looked at it this morning and I totally agree that he should get off.
His initial intent was purely to leap high and smother the ball.
Couldn't do much else on the way down.
An unlucky and unfortunate football collision ensued
Move on

Can’t move on Tenacious - even accidental high contact (which it may have been accidental but I doubt) means 2 weeks out min given Brayshaw was taken high and concussed out of the game.

I actually believe elite sportspeople know exactly what they are doing and the media keep referring to a “football actions” - is that an actual legal term within the rules, you may know I don’t.

A defender with a clenched fist spoils the ball is a legitimate football action, but the same action collects a head, accidental or not, it’s reportable. (Unless your name start with Danger).

The more I've looked at it I think Maynard is in trouble. After the initial attempt to smother, he twisted his body to bump.
Whilst he's already airborne, like a aerial skier, that is possible in mid air.
He should have pushed Brayshaw away or looked to protect the vulnerable player as a first thought. Given the outcome for Brayshaw, I think Maynard's finals series is done.
I agree, however one of the commentators already started the defence in stating that ‘he had a duty of care to protect himself’ when he rotated his body in such a way.

From my perspective he ‘chose to run at full speed and canon ball into the player’ (as part of his smothering attempt), who was in an extremely vulnerable position directly after kicking the ball.

It wasn’t a footballing collision where both players were running into a contest, or where a player had to brace for contact when another player ran across his line during a marking contest.

There were plenty of ways that he could have attempted the smother that didn’t involve him jumping directly into the opposition player.

The only duty of care that he displayed was to himself, and given the AFL have been punishing players based on outcomes for most of the year, it will be interesting to see how they shimmy out if this one.

I have gone the opposite way. I don't think he had enough time to do anything other than what he did. You could make the case he was trying to evade as well but there just wasnt enough time.

You can see Angus hasnt even taken a step after kicking and he gets hit. Also take a look at his running path after he kicks the ball. He takes a swerve to the right, like he falls away. He basically falls into Maynards path.

Christian is a Pies supporter and the media narrative is to get him off so can't see him being charged.

.................
Dunno about that
I reckon Maynard is entitled to run towards Brayshaw with the ball.
Brayshaw was directing the play and had options such as running left or right to avoid Maynard - or handballing - in which case Maynard presumably would have stayed on his feet.
But once Brayshaw decided to kick - I just reckon Maynard was justified in jumping to try and stop the ball.
Happened in an instant - and once he was in the air he couldn't do anything but come down again. No other option existed for him.
Pity about Brayshaw being hurt - but a footballing accident

Anyway - that's my take

This is Dangerfield on Nick V mark 2. The media like Gerard Whateley said nothing to see here. Yet the head is sacrosanct? Ask Rhyan Mansell. Whateley crucified him. Pie supporters blamed Brayshaw for not protecting himself. Umpiring and Tribunal system need complete overhaul. Dan Richardson Michael Christian should be first to be sacked.

If I was Collingwood and this ends up at the tribunal I would 100% site the Dangerfield Vlastuin incident as precedent.

Once again, the AFL have made a rod for their own backs.

I agree too with you year.

Bit late for Maynard being remorseful afterwards.

Brayshaw was not expecting that type of contact. You look at the vision and his eyes are fixed at executing his kick.

Maynard the ‘tough guy’ wanted to make a statement. Impose himself on the contest.

Maynard jumped off the ground. Saw imminent contact turned his body to brace.

Result = Brayshaw knocked out.

Verdict= 2 week’s minimum. If he is lucky.

Precedent = Dangerfield vs Vlaustin.

Outcome= Nick out of the game. Dangerfield no case to answer.

That was 2020

This is 2023.

Should be suspended the more I think about it.

Changed the course of the game and the first quarter for Melbourne.

I am still perplexed as to how Mansell got 3 weeks...... by comparison Maynard should get 6 but would bet anything he gets 0.

Change Maynard's name to Pickett and see ya later 8+.

I think the Mansell suspension is the precedent. Going for the ball, turned to brace himself at the last second when a collision was imminent to protect himself. No other option, happened in a split second. Player concussed and missed the next game. No malice. 3 weeks.

With Maynard, turned to brace himself at the last second when a collision was imminent to protect himself. No other option, happened in a split second. Player concussed and will miss the next game. No malice.

Apart from the fact the AFL makes up the rules as it goes along, how could Maynard not be suspended compared to the Mansell incident?

Maynard “flew like Superman” into Brayshaw.

Player knocked out into next week and beyond.

Any other football code but the made up on the spot rules in AFL. Instant Red Card you’re out of the game In any other code accident or not. Problem here is make believe rules with no regard to precedent. Here a key player KOd no further part in the game. Huge downside for the Dees. Big win for the whingers

Dan Richardson is fast becoming the poison chalice when it comes to football.
Left us when we were shiit, left Essendon asking for mama and now incharge of the umpires. It couldn't have been a worse season concerning the standard of umpiring this year.
Richardson isn't any good
