Elimination Final Game Day Thread v Lions

Well what a typically shattering yet fitting way to end what was an eminently frustrating season. *smile* we were hard to watch at times this year. WTF has been going on? Did we have a spy at Collingwood training early in the pre season when they were practicing how to play at the end of tight games and close them out? Did that person then go back to the club and say:

"We all know Collingwood will be *smile* this year so let's just do the opposite of what they are doing!!!"

Fair dinkum; 6 games decided by less than a goal and we didn't win *smile* one of them!!! The best we could do was a farcical draw against Freo. We invented new ways to blow games. Balta forgetting about the countdown clock against Freo. Cumbo playing on in same game and siren blows. Aarts plays on against North instead of taking his set shot. George finds new ways to miss goals against GC. We even went back to some of the tried and true methods; GC kicked a goal after the siren to beat us virtually 10 years to the day from the Harmichael game. We now have the distinction of being the only team to be beaten by the Suns by a kick after the siren; twice!! We really go the whole hog when we *smile* up.

That game tonight was pretty pathetic from our players and coaches. Just error after error after error. An absolute litany of *smile* ups. The last Brisbane goal was the epitome of how poorly we have defended this year. 3 talls in the square but they still couldn't kill the ball to prevent Joe *smile* Daniher kicking the winning goal.

Questions must be asked of the coach. How can he not rectify this situation where we continually win close games?? It's not like he doesn't have any video to review. It happens time and again yet we still cant fix it. Why? What are we doing wrong?

Of those 6 games; even if we split them and go 3-3 instead of 0-1-5 we finish top 4 and get an MCG final with a double chance. We *smile* blew it this year. We could have really caused some havoc with a top 4 finish. Instead we whimper out with a loss at the Gabba against an undermanned and quite frankly very ordinary Brisbane side.

What an absolute wasted *smile* show of a year. In hope it burns and drives our middle to young group of players in years to come. To never be in the position of continually losing close games again. I hope our coaches develop strategies for the players in how they play in these situations. I hope we recruit some bona fide ball winning mids so we don't get owned by the likes of Lachie Neale again. A lot of work to do.

A mega rant but *smile* hell I am p!ssed off.
Hardwick can't be totally at fault.
These guys are getting paid to kick.
That was the worse kicking display all year, we couldn't hit a target to save ourselves.
Why did we go to Brisbane not prepared for the slippery ball at night?
Why did Cotchin and many others save there worse for last night?
Baker laughing after kicking out on the full, that shitt needs to stop.
Our back 6, need the biggest preseason in our history. The need to Gel, they need to learn to talk to each other and spend the entire pre season learning how to defensively kill a high ball.
Really disappointing, but our best was good enough but not for long enough.

Yes mate we both watched the same game lol. So if the oppo can shark Nank's tap outs, why could'nt we?

We don't have the quality inside mids and with Meatball gone, they had a field day. Like most things, it ain't that straightforward - despite that it looked like Nank was looking for Neale and his mates .
The opposition weren't sharking our taps.

You don't have to shark something that's given to you.

Nankervis is the single biggest factor in that loss. He took away any chance our midfield had, either by taking it out of the ruck and fumbling it, or tapping directly to them.

It actually hurt us when they lost McInerney. Nank was getting free first use. And ballsed up every option. As a Midfielder, you can't do squat if your teammate starts with the ball every contest, and gives it to the opponent.

A very good question. I wonder if someone will put it to Dimma? Our midfield is clearly no longer good enough to let players like Neale, Oliver etc roam at will and expect to beat them on merit.

Until we can get a midfield to match the best we need another plan.
Our midfield is garbage has been for year

Balta has been rarely great this season. Not sure whether he has peaked or is a champion in the making.
Balta is a bonehead. If he played like DTLD he’d be fine. He’s a longer kick and better mark but he’s got nothing between the ears and constantly turns it over or gets in the wrong position to defend. Trade table.

Well, that's it for me and better half for 2022.
Frustrating year, and will now plan our long awaited holiday somewhere warm.
Sayonara, PRE for the time being and wish all PREnders the best for the rest of the year.
Look forward to a better 2023 footy wise.

Ironic that our final game should reflect our season so well. We were good enough but not good enough.

Boys gave it everything. No disgrace yet frustratingly disappointing.

Richmond was robbed. Simple.
We should have won.

How on earth didn't Nankervis and Taz kill that ball in the last goal of the night.

Bloody terrible.

Brian Taylor They can’t overturn goal umpire unless they’re definitively sure
How the *smile* can they overturn goal when there are no cameras under goal post
Score review should’ve come back inconclusive umps call Therefore it’s a goal
but “from these angles we can clearly see ball crosses line over goal post”
BS there’s no way they can tell

Was that Riewoldt who was one of the three players that couldn’t kill the ball at the end ? What on earth is he doing … he’s just standing there putting out a weak arm. He needed to be running in and jumping over the pack. Booomf !

We used to do that so well. Not now.

Just watched last 2 minutes and Short could have passed it to a clear leading player at about 35 out(think it was Marlion). Why didn’t one of the pack defending that ball in the Lions forward line mark it?

Riewoldt was there so was Tarrant Vlaustin Balta none of them killed the ball by punching it through

The last two minutes really summed up our year perfectly. Lynch missed a very gettable goal. Shorty missed an open Marlion and worst of all Nank and Tarrant failing to kill the ball and the Spud Daniher kicks the sealer.

Six games decided by under a goal for one draw. It is good to expose the kids but it was very costly having Gibcus and Cumbo out there. Gibcus with some moments like an early career Rance had and Cumbo with some very poor efforts as well.

Let's call it a point im not sure how a professional footballer misses from as close as lynch was. Game over then and there if he kicks it

They needed a down the goal line angle. Ball may have been above the goal.post but a metre behind it. Cannot assess that from a front on shot.

a game of close margins - that's why the ARC decision fails the game and the RFC

yes we should've shut down the Daniher toe poke play
yes we could've been cleaner, and we needed to stop Neale - he was collecting OUR ruck taps most of the time
we got done by the umpires - 5 goals from dubious frees? 2-3 from weird 50m decisions?

But we were still right in it ... that's why the ARC decision is mighty strange

Lynch and the crowds reaction is enough to make me believe the goal umpire was wrong to call it a goal.
