Elimination Final Game Day Thread v Lions

Just one of *those* years, posh. We'll bounce back. Many learnings. Great exposure for some real emerging talent.

On Nank punching it, good question. Maybe he couldn't with the lack of air, maybe he didn't think of it. It was worth a try, for sure.

Yeah agree on the exposure for our talent. With a couple of right additions, we can go again and be as good if not better next year (and hopefully not even be in the position with so many close ones next year).

Couple of new additions, settled positions for key players like Balta / Bakes, more game time for Sonsie, MRJ, Cumberland the future is bright.

Every day of the week that is deemed inconclusive evidence to overturn the umpires decision. But they normally stuff around for 3 minutes before coming up with that. This time 10 seconds & of the course the ball goes up the other end for a gaol.

The entirety of your post was good Rat but the issue with this part is that we lost EVERY close game we played in this year and it cost us a real shot. Much of that is on the coach. It is an obvious issue and he wasn't able to fix it this year. Hopefully he can next year.
Think we were pretty much the same in 2016 then in 2017 we turned it around and won a few close ones. But I do remember Dimma’s response to the losses was always the same “we will learn from this”. I hated that saying more every time I heard it.

When you lose a lot of close games in a year you normally win quite a few more the next. Taranto and hopefully one or two more additions, natural growth and we're top-4.

I dont think punching it far would have helped. The Lions constantly won the ground ball, and were able to make space and clear congestion.
Our pressure around the ball was poor all night.

Lynch and the crowds reaction is enough to make me believe the goal umpire was wrong to call it a goal.
Don’t matter it’s not upto players reaction or crowd the AFL official was the goal ump he called it a goal
if goal review isn’t 100% sure watching vid should’ve called it inconclusive and goal ump call as a goal should stand

I'm not disputing that at all. The ARC decision that there was conclusive enough video evidence to over turn the goal umpire is a joke.

But I was shocked when I heard the goal umpire say "I think it was a goal".

Wrong place to post but some real positives out of the year is the Jack Ross belated resurgence, the Sonsie experiment and the Miller introduction. Cumberland and MJ give an extra dynamic up forward. Gibcus probably cost us last night but hey, trial by fire. He will learn heaps.

What last night exposed was also some of the real development that needs to take place with some of these blokes. Miller needs to get more selfish Cumberland less selfish and Gibcus must learn to keep the ball in front of him and keep his feet. Josh has a lot of physical developmet in front of him. Really amazing how well he did for a skinny kid.

Also if in post mortem mode I think the dual captains and choice of captains was a mistake (even though I was in support of both) Nank and Grimes both believe they needed to win games off their own boots and this detracted from the games of others. Nank was horrible last night. I dont know why he got so much time when Miller looked so much more effective.

I'd make Jack Graham captain next year and make Flossy vice captain, Nank and Grimes should go back to playing their more selfless roles.

I'd love to see what a string of games in the ruck and some confidence does to Miller's game.

Finally gotta love Jack. What a big game clutch player he is ( even if it was probably his touch that le to the Daniher goal)

And this demonstrates our basic issue this year. Lack of trusts in your teammates. Too much of players doing their thing rather than the team thing.

No way Jack gets anywhere near that goal square if Rance and Grimes are calling the shots.

I was a proponent of Dusty playing but probably Stacky was a better option. With Dusty Shai and Cumberland down there it waltzed out pretty easily out of their defence all night.

Yeah said the same thing. When there's a clear touch of a finger or a post they replay it multiple times for over a minute, this time they make a quick call after 10 seconds on some grainy vision like you're looking at the moon.

Reckon we win if McInerney doesn't get injured. As soon as he went off Neale just started roving to Nank, because he knew Nank would win the hit-outs.

Should've put Bakes on Neale.

ARC = A Rorted/Rooted Catastrophe

Also even though the ARC was a joke. Red is right. Just kick the goal! For all his bendy kick flaws Tom kicks the drop punt as good or better than most.

Why would the ball be traveling anywhere near the top of the goal post from 5 metres out.

Yeh I was disappointed when Oscar went off. He's a total spud.

I never moan about umps. It's a dead end.

The great irony here is that the ARC only exists because of societies inability to be mature enough to understand umpires make mistakes and to accept them with good grace.

If that was the case there would be no ARC, Lynch's goal would stand, we win and are loving life today.

Can't go off Lynch's reaction either cause if you looked at Andrews with his hands on his head, his body language looked like a goal.

Either way I don't know if it was a goal or a point, what I do know is the goal umpire thought it was a goal & to be overturned it needed to be conclusive. It wasn't.

He didn't think it through. He didn't take his time. He must have kicked it after about 15 seconds. He should have been taking time off the clock as well. If he really thought about it he should have snapped on his left, its the highest % option from there. You just need to setup to take your 2 steps and kick. Cannot be smothered. I reckon 90% of forwards would have kicked on their left. He has done it before. And the next option should have been a drop punt, as you say he is a very reliable drop punt. He runs straight in and has a reliable ball drop. He chose his worst option, the reality is the moment got to him.

Worst part was we lost the game. 2nd worst was a total spud with a stupid mo kicked the winning goal.
Yeh, sheep dogged 3 goals. Was pathetic most of the night, his usual weak hearted efforts. Scared in the ruck, scared in the contest. Hard to accept he kicked the winning goal.

That’s essentially a provocative post.

There are some people who actually enjoy the game, respect the efforts of all involved, accept the ups and downs as part of sport and win and lose with sportsmanship.

I understand it's not for everyone, and clearly the minority on here, but other people feeling different doesn't make it an illegitimate position.

Love this argument. By extension we should just allow the players to umpire the game. Save a few dollars on umpires. Get people from the crowd to do the throw ins. Who will do the ball ups? Perhaps the runners can rotate that task?

That's it MD.

We should just go all the way back and have the captains umpire the game.
