Elimination Final Game Day Thread v Lions

The thing I took out of tonite was that despite center hitout dominance, we could'nt dominate clearances. If we could have - our fwd line would have been hard to stop. We need another decent inside mid and pronto, if not to dictate clearance (esp on smaller grounds) then to at least break even. Whether thats Taranto, Hopper etc we shall see. Meatball's hammies are suspect and we cant simply rely on him alone. Shorty is not a mid, Cotchin imo despite trying hard is seeing the game pass him (much like Titch) .

We couldn't dominate centre bounce clearance because our captain kept hitting the ball to Lachie Neale and his mates. It was like Nank was colour blind and could not tell the difference between yellow and black and maroon and blue. It was an unbelievably bad game by Nank.

So, with Neale absolutely torching us at stoppages and clearances and a number of our guys being off on the night, why wouldn’t have Hooch taken someone like a Short or KMac or whomever to tag him and try and nullify his impact a bit ? Even if it meant just 30 possessions instead of 39 that could have been enough to get us over the line.

A very good question. I wonder if someone will put it to Dimma? Our midfield is clearly no longer good enough to let players like Neale, Oliver etc roam at will and expect to beat them on merit.

Until we can get a midfield to match the best we need another plan.

The entirety of your post was good Rat but the issue with this part is that we lost EVERY close game we played in this year and it cost us a real shot. Much of that is on the coach. It is an obvious issue and he wasn't able to fix it this year. Hopefully he can next year.
Imo its either the players NOT adopting close game strategy...OR, there isnt one. Hopefully it'll be sorted mate let's see.

If a week's a long time in footy, then 6 months is an eternity.

Going to be an interesting off season for sure.

Well what a typically shattering yet fitting way to end what was an eminently frustrating season. *smile* we were hard to watch at times this year. WTF has been going on? Did we have a spy at Collingwood training early in the pre season when they were practicing how to play at the end of tight games and close them out? Did that person then go back to the club and say:

"We all know Collingwood will be *smile* this year so let's just do the opposite of what they are doing!!!"

Fair dinkum; 6 games decided by less than a goal and we didn't win *smile* one of them!!! The best we could do was a farcical draw against Freo. We invented new ways to blow games. Balta forgetting about the countdown clock against Freo. Cumbo playing on in same game and siren blows. Aarts plays on against North instead of taking his set shot. George finds new ways to miss goals against GC. We even went back to some of the tried and true methods; GC kicked a goal after the siren to beat us virtually 10 years to the day from the Harmichael game. We now have the distinction of being the only team to be beaten by the Suns by a kick after the siren; twice!! We really go the whole hog when we *smile* up.

That game tonight was pretty pathetic from our players and coaches. Just error after error after error. An absolute litany of *smile* ups. The last Brisbane goal was the epitome of how poorly we have defended this year. 3 talls in the square but they still couldn't kill the ball to prevent Joe *smile* Daniher kicking the winning goal.

Questions must be asked of the coach. How can he not rectify this situation where we continually win close games?? It's not like he doesn't have any video to review. It happens time and again yet we still cant fix it. Why? What are we doing wrong?

Of those 6 games; even if we split them and go 3-3 instead of 0-1-5 we finish top 4 and get an MCG final with a double chance. We *smile* blew it this year. We could have really caused some havoc with a top 4 finish. Instead we whimper out with a loss at the Gabba against an undermanned and quite frankly very ordinary Brisbane side.

What an absolute wasted *smile* show of a year. In hope it burns and drives our middle to young group of players in years to come. To never be in the position of continually losing close games again. I hope our coaches develop strategies for the players in how they play in these situations. I hope we recruit some bona fide ball winning mids so we don't get owned by the likes of Lachie Neale again. A lot of work to do.

A mega rant but *smile* hell I am p!ssed off.
Brilliant posting, Rids, that I'm totally in agreement with. I've questioned whether Dimma can train/improve players' skills and game intel. The evidence is not encouraging.

Re Colonwood, it was interesting to read an article from a Pies player, think it was Maynard, talking about Fly's pre-season training. He did not start match sim until very late. Instead they were just drilled on battling out one-on-one contests continually, along with then practising their methods and strategies in a close finish. So intensive focus was on beating their opponent to win the ball, and then know exactly what to do with it under the most intense pressure.

Clearly it has paid off. Fly could possibly prove the next coaching guru. Remember, he's doing this with far from the best AFL list. Like most, I give them little chance of upsetting the Moggies, but if they do ...

Don't disagree, but several times the ball went to 50/50 at worst with Cotchin, and Neale just walked away with it. I imagine it's hard to hit it to your own guys when they're never in best position and getting flogged even when they are.

Yep I read that article as well; think it was Howe who said it?

Brilliant coaching by Fly; outstanding.

Yep it is clear that our midfield, especially without Prestia, is not at the level of the best midfields.

Yes mate we both watched the same game lol. So if the oppo can shark Nank's tap outs, why could'nt we?

We don't have the quality inside mids and with Meatball gone, they had a field day. Like most things, it ain't that straightforward - despite that it looked like Nank was looking for Neale and his mates .

Again, this appears an area where Dimma is just rigid and fixed in his football philosophy: we don't tag. Period. Meanwhile other coaches, like Goodwin last week who specifically moved Harmes back into the midfield (from playing really well previously at HBF) to curb Neale. Dees absolutely belted them.

But you have to train a tagger during the sesaon and set them their task on key oppo stars during the year, so they prove their worth and develop the hardened methods of achieving this highly disciplined job.

So, because he's never espoused it, can't say we have developed a tagger ever with Dimma. Throwing someone the task in a big final, they're not going to be trained up for the requirements.

Yes, you're right. It was Howe. Fascinating insights. Fly is looking like a real winner, but a long way to go.

Well, it's lucky we selected several with all those handy draft picks in '21 then.

Hold on ... aaah, oh.

Interestingly, just Prestia was inserting himself in the game.
twang goes the hamstring.
we need to either 3D print a new hammy for him or send him to Germany.

We were our worst enemy no composure, school boy mistakes ,panicked and gifted lions so many goals. We weren't clean enough to been the same issue all year and what irks me it's our senior players.Had a few passengers to.

Lynch made hard work of a simple routine shot no excuse game over he kicks that.Nank ,Balta and someone else go for the same ball and they kick the winning goal that was auskick stuff.

If the AFL had of followed their own rules Richmond FC would still be in the finals.
They did not follow their own rules, never really do when it doesn't suit.
Gil needs to be in the rear view mirror and the next player needs to do what they say they are going to do. Fair, equitable and transparent. Everything the AFL IS NOT.

All this commentary doesn't matter.
Free kick, bad kick, strategy, coaching, blah blah blah.
Richmond win if the AFL follows its own rule set.
Plain and simple.

Balta is worry lacking footy smarts bigtime have not been impressed with him. Get Truck Rutten to work with our defence will benefit all the back 6 , but especially Balta and Gibcus.

Footy ops salary cap and depth of assistant coaches has to play a part. Our poise and game sense was poo.
