Elimination Final Game Day Thread v Lions

Just a sensational game of footy, one of the best finals matches ever I would reckon. Shame there had to be a loser and shame it was us.

Sums up our season in a way, didn't take our chances in close games and it cost us a genuine premiership shot.

Going to be hard watching the next few weeks knowing we should be there, but the game is in great shape, the new rules are flying and if tonight is any indication it will be a magnificent finals series.

And next year has plenty of promise.
Sensational from a neutral point of view. If we couldn't win that we cannot do any back patting.
Far far below a memorable final. Was an error riddled defensive error final. Zero high marks. Only a couple of great goals plus Jack's 2 in last.
Memorable only for the wrong reasons.

For as bad as the umpiring was, our ineptitude and insane amount of errors, plus the clear deficiencies we have as a collective are what cost us.

Salty AF after that loss.

- When Shedda laid that tackle that should have been game.

- Yes the Lynch ARC call was *smile* but he should have made it a sure thing. We were the better side most of the night but let them stay close.

- Sonz looked okay to me. Not expecting him to dominate, yet. He's building nicely I reckon.

- Miller's reading of the ball in flight and ability to use his body to get to the right place is exceptional. Pure natural. No idea if he will ever be 1st ruck standard, but he will be handy dropping into the forward 50.

- I love Cotch but he isn't the future of the club. But then who is coming through that can impact the contest the way he does? The only bloke that comes close to his ability to get into the contest and use his body is probably Pickett.

- Ditto Jack. Not the future. He's still a serious problem for opposition backs and so worth persisting with until a genuine replacement stands up.

- Gibcus will benefit from a couple more pre-seasons to bulk up a bit, still gets brushed aside too easily but he has time.

- I don't think the call to include Dusty was a good one. But then who plays if he doesn't? George?

- I understand why people weren't happy with Balta's game but his contested marking has improved a lot. He is a good bet these days with the ball overhead. I have said it many times, but they need to work on a set play when he gets the ball forward of the wing. His enormous slipper should be an asset, but the opposition seem to read it better than our forwards. We need one of them to know it's going to carry and get into position.

- Prestia has been the difference in most of our wins this year. Without him we look very weak in the middle. Going to have to address that if we want to stay at the business end of the ladder.

- MRJ is a star. So is his (nephew?).

- KMac is a legend.

Gutted. Thought we had them. Now set a calendar reminder so I don't miss out on Mainlandy's comp next year.

Balata is a complete unknown now. 6 months ago I reckon he was the best CHB in the AFL. Now who Knows? He ain’t real bright but that shouldn’t preclude a good AFL career!
What's 'Bright' got to do with a good footballer?
Did you hear Neale & Bailey speak.
I turned on sub titles

If they are looking at player reactions then look at Harris Andrews. He thought it was a goal.

Valid points Ridley.

But everytime we threatened to blow the game away early they were GIFTED a soft free kick, putrid 50 or a goal against the flow.

If we get umpired the same way we win that by 5 goals.

We were up against it tonight
Yes the umpires kill us; totally agree. It is a disgrace. But with all of that we should still have won.

We *smile* it royally. Story of our year.

Total sheep dog. Won't put his head over the ball. How many times did he just hack the ball off the ground when he felt heat instead of putting his head over it. 3/4 of his 50m "laser" kicks end up with the opposition and go back over his head.

The perfect trade bait. Someone will get sucked in and pay overs for him.

Has a role within our team but should have never been put into the midfield. His defensive attributes are a liability. I had him as our offensive half back when bachar retired but DR has gone past him by a mile.

He either goes back or he goes. If he can’t put his head over it or win it he has no business being around the ball

The umpiring was shocking
But what do we really expect??
Our kicking was absolutely shocking.
Pickett has an uncanny skill of hitting the opposition in an out number.
Our skills tonight were horrendous

Neale obviously the best on ground, but Bailey absolutely had a cracking game, we couldn’t lay a finger on him all night, we just couldn’t tackle him, his disposal was first rate

Or, if we hadn't have *smile* up so much earlier in the game we would have been 5 goals up and it wouldn't have mattered.

That was a poor Brisbane side. We blew it.

You could say the same thing about Brisbane on many different occasions throughout the game - *smile* ups are footy games, it's not like our *smile* ups were of greater magnitude that Brisbane's. We all turn the ball over.

Yet in the dying moments of the game we were robbed of a goal based on rules of which unusually for AFL is a pretty straight forward concept, and isn't based on some bizarre interpretation - "umpires call" unless there is conclusive evidence against. Where was that conclusive evidence??

No doubt this will be swept under the carpet

So did the most qualified bloke in the world .....

The goal ump.

How was *smile* dunstall? 'You know when youve kicked it'

It would take about a minute for the fox tech to put a montage of uncertain goal kickers waiting on the the two fingers,

Over the last century

Personally I still find the umpire's corruption a bit draining, but I am used to it.

Definitive evidence is normally required to overturn an umpire's decision, but oh well. That's how the AFL operates, as we already knew.

Promising signs by a lot of the team.
Here's the answer, very simple really, something that former coaches have said should have happened long ago...two goal umpires at each end. The extra wages will be a better use of funds than this ridiculous system of making decisions using vision that is too far away and obviously inconclusive. Eddie everywhere has a financial interest in the co. operating the current system so we are unlikely to see it revert to purely human decision-making.

I have no problem losing a final to a better team.

Brisbane are NOT a better team.

We got shafted

I don't know if I mentioned this earlier in the season but someone (preferably Jack) needs to teach lynch some basic physics about velocity torque and resistance. If he could teach him that intense stare he had in the last quarter that would help too. I was confident on all jack's shots tonight and I am never confident on his long shots. Anyway why
the hell does Tom belt the ball on his benders. The ball has less time and chance to actually do the bending. How has he not figured this out yet.

Between a rock and a hard place with Dusty. Have to play him to get match fitness up in case we were to get deep into finals but going to cost us a little in the short-term. Had to play him.

It’s a straight forward as this in my opinion. If the criteria is the look of a players face when determining a goal god help us
