Dylan Grimes JDM

Three separate issues:

Who is responsible for the Grimes foot injury?

My answer - don't care. Medical. Out of my area. Waddya think?

Prognosis?

Medically I have no idea. But we all know players like Grimey who have pleny of talent but can't get on the park. In footy terms he seems to me to be a player who may never make it on the park. Crucified. But there are others who do, just not as often as we'd like. That's where I think Dylan Grimes will fit in. He will not be a 200 gamer despite his obvious talent to make that club. Another fan said to me recently he'd play 93 games over ten years. I nodded.

The problem with the expression "soft-tissue injuries" is the use of the word "soft". Grimes is as hard as nails on the park. But he, like other very gifted players I don't care to name now, seems to naturally break under the stress of giving everything he can. Tearing his own hamstring off the bone going for a spoil? Whoa.

Outcome from my intuition? What I'd bet? Over the next five years Grimey will play 68 games. Three years will include revelations of his best, yet to be delivered, form. I sincerely hope that some are in finals. He's at least that good.

Worst case is more of what we've seen. Best is that he learns to manage the hammies and gets over the foot and there is nothing new. Then plays he 150 games over ten years. This IMO would be a miracle of justice.

Grimes is one of my top four or six favourite players at the club and, unfortunately, getting the rough end, fair in the jacksie, from the injury gods. I may be a bit biased.

Backline structural problems in 2013+.

Astbury is almost as bad as Grimes for injury and is treading water atm in the Magoos. Let's hope he comes good.

Lucky we pulled Chaplin. (Given the likelihood of the Grimes star-crossed does the Chaplin thing seem measured or pivotal now?)

Griffiths has not come up by a long way. And now 82kg and 188cm Batch plays #3 back for us. No Grimes, no Astbury, no Griffiths has hurt us a lot. When you plan you play percentages. None out of three is a massacre. Notice that Elton is playing CHB in the Magoos? We have to develop and/or recrruit another tall back by year's end. See why I post about playing Vickery at CHB, insanely? Elton may be playing there next year.

When Dylan Grimes comes back it has to be as a #4 back. A (naturally) light running tall who peels off from time to time. His body won't withstand anything more and we can more easily replace him in that role if he falls over.

It's now very unlikely he'll be the champion he might have been. Let him triumph less often in a lesser role.

Trade him? Blasphemy. This is a Richmond man. Call me old-fashioned; call yourself a Romantic - the small trumphs are the best. Small for Grimes.

Nothing wrong with having tall smalls down back though.

Grimes is a genuine premiership number 3 defender. Moving him to the number 4 slot could possibly strengthen our back 6. He makes good decisions.
Rance would become the 3rd tall which could either make or break him. Morris and Houli in the running spots.

As you say Jack we are crying out for a number 2 back. This is the year to be playing Astbury, Elton, or Griffiths. We need to find out if they are likely. For mine I would be giving Astbury first go. Another good decision maker. The wild card could be Ben Darrou. Plays on the big boys at Coburg but is he big enough to do the job at afl level.

Perhaps we need to find out.

Agree with all u have said apart from above
If were now plating Elton CHB in the magoos the coaches have mental issues. Do they also not realize we have no CHF. The have stuffed griffo by tryin to make a fwd a back and now what they want to do the same to Elton who is shOwing good promise up fwd? And u want to add tv to that list too?????
Who's go play tall fwd jack maguane and A Edwards lol. Gotta think about both ends of the ground mate.

Astbury should be developed in the magoos as the CHB firstly before the Others. If he comes on we have him chappy and Rance as 3 talls. Grimes 4th tall hbf runner interceptor when he does play

Our backline has looked fantastic lately. Even in the Dreamtime game I think they saved a 10 goal flogging. Imagine what it will look like if we ever get this bloke fully fit. ;)

Saw Dylan at the Hall of Fame dinner, was not wearing a moon boot anymore and was walking well (very slight limp). Will be great to have him back when he is fully fit.

Too injury prone,
His 20 years old and always gets injured, what he going to be like at 26-28...Retired.
If a club showed any interest, a nice pick between 30-40 would do it for me.

Often many players get a lot of injuries early in their careers (preumably due to body shock at AFL tensity) and then have a long and prosperous career. Grimes is too good to just let go because he's had a few injuries at 20 years old. 30-40 pick is very speculative, we know Grimes is AFL quality, why would you contemplate a trade at this stage for that sort of pick?

What makes him so good? In his huge 21 game career.
Brad McGwilliam part 2.

So if he's no good, why are you suggesting pick 30 or 40? Can't have it both ways. I think he's a footballer, has natural instincts and is very good at positioning himself in the right spots. Granted he hasn't played many games yet but he's already played a number of very strong performances and that's a huge positive for a young tall player. Who's Brad McGwillam?

Geeze you have the shades on. He was instrumental down back in our wins against Sydney and hawthorn last year, did his hammy in the dreamtime game and we struggled without him down back for the rest of the year. Showed enough talent and composure in his 1st year that the future was looking bright, but we all know how that turned out. It's all about potential to do, not potential injury setbacks.

Delisted him then. Who cares he never plays any way

Sure will be.

As for the things that make him valuable when fit are:

- Leadership & composure
- Flexibility (can play tall or small)
- Pushes hard to contests
- 1 %s
- Neat skills

However a lot of that does rely on him being fit and the leg injuries will be hampering his development unfortunately.

Chaplin, Rance, Grimes, Houli, Morris and Newman is a great back 6. Newman to be replaced by Dea/Batchelor in coming years
