Dustin Martin

Not short of a dollar, he is loyal got no doubt about that. 99% certain he will finish up a tiger for life. And IMO we will still get 2 to 3 years of bloody top shelf footy from him. So Father Grigg says anyway. I'm in the he will stay a tiger for life camp!

And won't it be a beautiful thing, 4 of the clubs greatest heroes from the one outstanding era all reaching the 300 game mark.

Think of it this way, in the previous 130 odd years before Shane Edwards reached the mark, we'd only had 3 players get there.

Quite remarkable imo.

Jack actually reached the mark before Edwards, but the point still stands. And of those 3 earlier, 2 of them (Bourke and Bartlett) were also from the same era.

See the mooted listed veteran rule?, can park a player with 10 years service and 32 yo outside the cap. If that happens, Dusty becomes even more valuable to us.

That would benefit us but imagine all the geriatrics down at the Pussies not included in salary cap

Unfortunately, the money would still be included in the salary cap:

'The criteria put forward by the AFL in the scenario is the player would have to be over 32 years old and to have served at least 10 years at that same club, with his money still being included in the salary cap.'

I have said this before but the club needs to get going on extending his contract.
Personally I would love to see Dusty play until he retires at Richmond. I get all the stuff about draft picks etc but you see club legends like Dusty rarely in a lifetime and I think that is important to the fabric of a club.
Dusty retiring a 350 game club legend who played only at the tigers would be a fitting full stop on one of the greatest careers of one of our greatest ever players.

What's the point of it then?

I think he will stay too. I reckon this is all media drivel as they know that the RFC and Dusty sell clicks.

He's actually still playing very very good footy. If his name wasn't Dustin Martin, the media would be crowing about this guy lighting it up.

So Dimma was trying to play him forward and he sort of stayed there for a few games under Mini before going into the midfield (you can see from his clearance stats when he was given more midfield time).

Pre Move - Rds 1-12 (11 games). 20.3 disposals, 1.9 clearances, 1.2 goals. 1.0 behinds
Post Move - Rds 13-23 (8 games), 27.0 disposals, 4.0 clearances, 1.4 goals, 1.3 behinds

Since going back into the midfield he's actually scoring heavier than when he was predominantly playing as a forward. The numbers above are elite.

By moving into the middle I think its also helped take Shais game to the next level too.

Pre Move - Rds 1-12 (12 games). 21.5 disposals, 3.8 clearances, 1.3 goals. 1.0 behinds
Post Move - Rds 13-23 (10 games), 22.7 disposals, 4.7 clearances, 1.4 goals, 1.4 behinds

Again elite numbers. Our problem is really that with both in the midfield our balance defensively is a bit off, we need to correct that in the off-season. Lambo was obviously a big part of what made Dustin so powerful in the 3 premierships, we need a couple to sacrifice their offensive game to provide defensive support to allow these 2 boys to do their thing.

Goal kicking midfielders are so important (and will become more important for us if we can have a functioning forward line next year with Lynch back), there are only a handful of players in the comp that can boast 20+ disposals and more than a goal per game.

Petracca - 27.9 and 1.2
and...............................our 2 boys above.

There are a couple of others that are close.
Daicos - 31.3 and 0.9
Taranto - 29.2 and 0.9
Bontempelli - 27.9 and 0.9
Rozee - 25.9 and 0.9

Thats 7 players and 3 of them are our mids. Its why I can see us rebounding strongly and all this talk of "bottoming out" is premature.

We certainly need a transition phase, especially with some of our other older players that are trending downwards (Pickett, Kmac, Grimes etc) but with a strong off season and some defensive buyin from some of the other mids, then I think we can rebound strongly. That defensive midfield intent will help us to protect the defense, whilst also scoring well from midfield and with a more functioning forward line contributing more goals who knows what happens next year. The comp is so close at the moment, that teams will have up years and down years over the next few and I expect the finals places to be a bit fluid over the coming years.

OK, I only skimmed it. Not that exciting then. Extra list spot but still in the cap for 1 vet. They use Hawkins as an example, maybe its on hockings x-mas list?

I assume if he honours his current contract and decides he wants to move to gold coast or elsewhere from 2025, that he would be an unrestricted free agent and we wouldn't get any compensation... is that how it would work?

If Ralph Carr has his way, Martin will do a Farewell Season in 2025 where every week is a chance for that team/ground to say Good Bye to Martin. Probably followed by a camera crew and a commemorative video of the game produced and sold separately until the box set comes out.

Thank *smile* Martin wont have a bar of it.

It would be based on the "formula" which is supposedly length and size of contract.
