Wasn't the Lance Franklin compo pick #19 for his massive 9 year contract?
We could get an end of 1st round pick for Dusty going by the Franklin compo.
If so, it would probably be better to match an offer, even though it would be higher than what we have put on the table. Otherwise we will be behind the 8 ball once again.
The Dangerfield trade is the new benchmark for these deals. Adelaide were prepared to match the offer, forcing Geelong to the trade table. In the end, there was no need for compensation as Geelong handed over two first round picks in consecutive seasons and a young player in order to get their man.
Should it come down to a similar situation, we will do the same. It will only get to a Franklin type situation if a team with mega salary cap space makes a ridiculous ten year offer that we will not be able to match and stay inside the cap. Essentially, the difference in the Franklin and Dangerfield trades was that Sydney still had their COLA allowance but also knew that it was going to be taken away very soon so they had a once in a lifetime opportunity: throw ten years worth of COLA at Franklin, locking it into an existing contract for ten years or lose it completely. Even then, Sydney still had to offload Mumford to get it done.
Martin, if he goes, will be more like Dangerfield unless someone can free up substantially more cap space than Richmond. That should be hard to do as we have recently offloaded both Yarran and Deledio. Surely, the contingency payments for these three players should lock every other club out.
Still this is the AFL. if they want something to happen, it happens. Pesky little issues like salary caps and fair trade are just obstacles that go away. To paraphrase David Suzuki, gravity is real, we can't change that. Everything else, taxes, currencies, salary caps are just made up, they are not real. We can change these things whenever we want.
