How can Sydney possibly afford Buddy and Dusty. That'd be $2million plus for just two players. I be checking their creative book keeping!

The book keeping side of things has never hindered them in the past. I dare say it won't now if that is what they want. They seem to be able to add so much talent without losing anything.

Think you'll find it would have something to do with 1 or 2 players retiring and Tippett being off loaded to another club(possibly us :help). That would be over a mill in savings.

If Dusty wants to leave for money then he should show he is honorable and say to North I will come but provided u make a fair trade for me. Aka dangerfield. This way supporters will better understand. If he just leaves then supporters of all clubs will boo him. He can still come out looking good while chasing money and fairly compensate the team that has developed him to achieve this.

This.
Did Buddy or Ablett do this for their clubs?

As if the AFL would ever look at Sydney's books. ::)

If Sydney get Dusty after robbing us of Lockett the AFL can GAGF'd. We should organise a protest march on AFL house and not leave until the stuffers that run the joint are kicked to curb

Buddy no but had won flags with Hawthorn and he also wanted to go North for his girlfriend. Ablett didn't have to as different rules that they could pick any player. Geelong was more than fairly compensated. Think 2 first round picks

I would suspect the Norf bid might be 7 x $1.5 M but given the huge slack they have be massively front loaded. They have to have slack down the track for future signings. If this is correct the next season may well be closer to $2M

So what are Norf doing? I thought they were rebuilding. Scott probably reckons recruiting Dusty and giving Waite another year they'll be in the premiership window.

Selling hope to their (limited) members. thats all this is. Hope and optimism based on bringing the best player into the club. Nothing to do about rebuilding or a tilt at a flag.

Dusty will go from one of the most loved players in the AFL to one of the most hated very quickly if he goes for the $$$. The whole AFL world will dislike him and his chances of any corporate or sponsorship $ will be nil

They will also get the number 1 or 2 pick as well

Yeah seems odd. Signing Dusty to have a tilt at mid-table.

True, but if the tax deductions are similar for both the $1.2m and $1.5m then his net incomes will increase by same amount but the income difference will not change.

Probably $1.5mil difference plus over the 7 years (assuming you maximise your tax benefit in those high income earning years). But we're talking about someone who's going to earn $8mill+ anyway. If it was me I would be therefore looking at other aspects of job satisfaction in my decision. I've always thought this would be more important to Dusty but I'm not sure if he gets influenced easily, and maybe some close to him are giving him bad advice. Who knows.

The AFL have said the compensation is not designed to fully compensate a club for the lost player.

The only way to get a better pick is to finish low on the ladder. It would be such a Richmond thing, to lose a player to free agency on the very year they finish higher than they have for 15 years ( or whatever it is)

Sort of already done that by getting Geelong's 1st round pick for this year and them finishing high up. It never seems to quite work out the best it could for us. Would hate Dusty to be a double-whammy.

If they sign Dusty it only costs them cap space. They still go to the draft table and add youth. And most players are cheap till there 3rd contract in year 6.

Kelly would cost them draft picks if they finish anything but last. If they finish last Kelly can walk there via the PSD for nothing.

Not that I see it but there is a world where Norf could have Kelly, Martin plus Cameron Rayner/LUD in the centre square next year.
