Dustin Martin

If he goes to North for the extra coin and extra tax, he will also miss out on the Brownlow merchandise sales, he could even miss finals.

Good luck to him, he has a big decision to make, common sense is he is better off at Richmond, and long term financially better off too, especially if he wins the brownlow.

Financially it still makes sense to stay a tiger, after tax, million more minus 130,000 he only gets extra this year if he signs up, tigers have also shown dusty his after footy earnings will be huge if he stays a tiger, lots of doors will close if he's off to another club.

What have they shown? Personally I think it's being over-stated by some.

Get in Josh Kelly's ear. 4 years Dusty's junior and probably won't command as much coin.
On the front foot Tigers.

Agree
No way do you give out 7 year contracts especially at over a million per year.
We have options rockiff or kelly if he leaves.

I wouldnt offer martin more then a mil a season and no more then 5 years

it will be a pick after our first rounder

Thats ok then we would have 15-14-13
3 top 20 picks when finishing in the top 4-
Ask hawthorn if thats a good return

If hes after instant cash Dusty will take Norths $1.5mill p.a 7 year deal and he can go and get *smile*
No player is worth that much $$ in the AFL. After all its a team sport and our other A graders would demand the same.
Hope we dont match Norths offer but are keen on someone else like Kelly as an end of first rounder as compensation for losing Dusty is BS

Given it looks like The Dusty thing could go either way, if we aren't right in to Kelly right now we would be incompetent. I'd be saying to Kelly. We think Dusty is going and we want you to come to us, a Top 4 team as his replacement. We can back out of Dusty signs but if he doesn't we are all in!

Frawley gpt Melbourne pick 3
If there was one season to be crap.it shouldve been this year not last year..

If he leaves and I were the club I would challenge the AFL's compensation system. When you have a clause that states "the committee has the power to recommend alternative outcomes to GM – Football Operations where the formula produces a materially anomalous result." If losing what should be a Brownlow medallist, back to back best and fairest winner who, at 26 years old is widely regarded as arguably the best player in the competition to a contract the likes the competition has never previously seen then a pick after our first round pick would have to be considered a materially anomalous result. If that isn't the case then what is? And I would even take the league to court over that if it were necessary. At the minimum we should get a pick before the first round in the draft which would then net us the KPF we have been looking for.

1.2 million for 7 seasons is very close to Buddy & on par with Gaz. Dusty & Merkin need to pull their heads out of their arse.
Also about the same as another Brownlow medalist in Fyfe.

Pick 1,13 & 14 is a hell of a lot better!!

This couldve been sorted out. Refuse to offer more then a million per sesson
Norths counter offer wouldve been lower therefore we couldve matched it and force them to trade.
Theres no way we will match a offer over 1.2 let alone 1.5
We shouldve not offered a contract at the beginning and then change the offer mid season.

I'm concerned about North. If a team has to pay 95% or whatever of the salary cap, and they have set aside $1.5m for Dusty, then how do they fullfil their payment obligation if Dusty stays at Richmond.

Like it Zips. Perhaps even stay at $800k.

Still reckon he stays but we can't move past the $1.2m for 7 years. It would be irresponsible of the club.

I don't think he'll leave but if he does, would we still get a first rounder if we also took Rockliff as a FA? The formula states "Net" loss, which takes into account the new salary and the length of the contract. I'd say there is still a significant net loss if we took Rockliff, circa $800k over at least 3 years (we wouldn't offer Rockliff more than 4). Thats got to be worth the first rounder after ours. I think if we don't get a FA we should definately challenge the AFL compensation on this, a current Brownlow medallist in the peak of form has to be worth more than that. I know Buddy set a precedent but maybe Hawks didn't ask the question. We should.

Otherwise maybe its a poker game before Dusty agrees on anything and before we agree to match. Threaten to match (without doing it) and see if we can get North to trade. It would be a bluff as we aren't likely to match but may be something to try and get a better result.

Wish my employer had the same problem. I'd be happy to help them out by taking a pay rise.

Will be a very sad day if Dusty leaves. Currently our best player and will be irreplaceable no matter who we get in return. Not only is it his playing ability but it will affect the strong bond the group have forged this year. They are on a high and playing for each other for the first time since 1995. We lose a player like him and our rise up the ladder and the respect we are earning will stagnate. He is our engine and we will become rudderless without him. Its not often a player of his impact comes along and will deflate the group if he leaves. We are in the premiership window now and losing him will put us behind the eight ball again.

I can tell you for certain that Dusty won't leave if the offer is $1.5m and the club is offering $1.2m. The ATO takes half of the difference!
On $1.2m the tax is $513,232 leaving him with $686,768 after tax.
A fair offer by the club and I'm sure Dusty will find a way to live on that sort of income with plenty to invest for his future!

On $1.5m the tax is $648,232 leaving him with $871,768 after tax, a difference of $165,000. But what club would put so much into one player when it is a team game with many other players to cater for. Just a nonsense offer.
