It's easy to say 'Give him 7 years & pay him whatever he's worth' but no doubt the reality of that is far more complex.
That is a huge portion of the salary cap tied to 1 player for a substantial amount of time. It will make it not only more difficult to retain current players but much harder to bring new talent to the club. We don't get access to the RFC books but I've no doubt thats what they're grappling with.

Also a 7 year deal is only a serious injury away from being a lead weight around the club's neck.
Yes Dusty has been extremely durable so far in his career but as we have seen with Deledio it doesn't take much to curb a footballer's output as they start to age. The next 7 will be the back end of Martin's career. Who's to say this isn't the pinnacle of the bell curve right now?

I am just uncomfortable with tying so much to one player. 5 year deals are risky enough, 7 is madness.
If Dusty can get that (at $1.5m) from North then pat him on the back & wish him well.

Reckon this is spot on. 7 years is waaay too long for any player who isn't under 20, if then.

Hope he stays but not on terms that greatly hinder the RFC as ToO pointed out above.

This is one of the posts of the year TOO. Spot on. If we can manufacture a trade out of it as well we could end up with pick 1 or 2 plus our other two first rounders. Plenty of $$ to attract a KPP too. Not the end of the world if he leaves.

FWIW I think this view is aligned with what the club is thinking. From my discussion with an RFC official a few weeks back, i was told that we wouldn't be matching the "crazy" offers. If Dusty accepts the $1.5 million from North, he is probably gone.

It seems North is offering an extra 300k per season or 2.1 million over the length of the contract.

If true I think we need to start preparing for the worst. Ridiculous amount to pay a player. At 33 he will still be on 1.5 mil a year. Who really wants to be paying that.

Yep unfortunately I think it's time to admit defeat no way Dusty his dad or Ralf will let him turn down 300k extra a year. Worst part is I don't think we can match the offer and force North to trade. If this happens it will leave a real bad taste in my mouth, we finally get on track after 30 odd years of sh!te and develop a once in a generation player only to have an irresponsible club come along and buy him away. Makes me feel physically ill

Could only happen to us.

its financially irresponsible and how the AFL who prop up that club allow it is discracful

What would we get in compensation if our best player leaves ? A first rounder ?

Get in Josh Kelly's ear. 4 years Dusty's junior and probably won't command as much coin.
On the front foot Tigers.

Dusty Out :wave $1.5 for 7 - over to you north... Have a look at Kourafidies last 2-3 years !!
Kelly in for 1.2 and Make Brown an offer (800K) from North while we are at it.

Yep! Agree. If they sign Dusty for that then Brown may be an option - throw him in with their 1st round pick and we should go for it - then get Kelly from GWS and go to the draft and snap up the cream!

Isn't their a Dusty jnr in this draft?

Said it before , however I'm sure a few of the Jacks club folk have had a chat with Dusty, if it is all about money to Dusty surely we can make life after footy very attractive to Dusty.

Anyway we've got finals to play and the saga will end very soon either way.

it will be a pick after our first rounder

Cannot let that happen - we need North to do a trade if it comes to that. Somehow we have to get them to trade for him or that is a silly pick for a almost elite player

The way is this going it may well end up like the cricketers. In Sydney the NRL players assn are playing hard ball on increasing the salary cap and the underlying threat is they take that to the courts knowing that salary caps are a restraint on trade. Once you go down that route it will become a free for all and there is no room for 16 or 18 clubs (including perhaps 5 or 6 basket cases). Given no salary cap think what Collingwood and hopefully Richmond could do.

Just a silly question but why is after and cant be before? Does anybody have the actual rule as the current Brownlow and long term huge contract can easily justify before? Be interesting to see if can only be after.

Would anyone be that upset if Dusty leaves and we got 2 1st rounders?

No as that would mean he wanted more than we are willing to pay. I would take that as long as they are early first rounders (or at least one).

It sucks, but Hawthorn only got pick 19 for a double premiership player , (Buddy).

If we want Norths pick number 1 or 2 we have to match and theyll have to do a deal. However because it's a money issue Dusty will decide to stay if we match. If we don't match we'll get pick 15 or so as compensation. The reason adelaide got a trade with geelong for danger because it wasn't about the money for him. Adelaide matched the offer but he still wanted to go home.
