That is a huge portion of the salary cap tied to 1 player for a substantial amount of time. It will make it not only more difficult to retain current players but much harder to bring new talent to the club. We don't get access to the RFC books but I've no doubt thats what they're grappling with.
Also a 7 year deal is only a serious injury away from being a lead weight around the club's neck.
Yes Dusty has been extremely durable so far in his career but as we have seen with Deledio it doesn't take much to curb a footballer's output as they start to age. The next 7 will be the back end of Martin's career. Who's to say this isn't the pinnacle of the bell curve right now?
I am just uncomfortable with tying so much to one player. 5 year deals are risky enough, 7 is madness.
If Dusty can get that (at $1.5m) from North then pat him on the back & wish him well.
Reckon this is spot on. 7 years is waaay too long for any player who isn't under 20, if then.
Hope he stays but not on terms that greatly hinder the RFC as ToO pointed out above.
