Dustin Martin

Martin is mad looking for 7 years. He should do 2 or 3 years, then do it all again and ask some one to give him 7 years.

As much as I love watching Dusty in full flight, he is flawed. Seven years at 1.2 mill is way overs for a midfielder, as good as he is. All of the Brownlow talk has been inflationary too. So here's the downside... He is a bash and crash footballer who relies on strength and flexibility. This takes a toll on any player's body. In three year's time he will be more injury prone and may lose the youthful edge that presently gets him out of trouble in the packs. Further, I have been concerned about his tendency to spray the trademark kick around the corner for some time. It looks amazing when it comes off, but it can also bring you unstuck.
I was bemused that some gave him three votes against Hawthorn...

Then there is the issue of relative payments within the club.

I wouldn't give him a cent more than Danger is getting. He's not as good and is also starting to me pee me off with his selfish attitude

GR would have given him a brown paper bag full of cash round one and it would of been done!

With inflation thats a brown suitcase!

Don't forget he is hopeless defensively and a one way runner. Moronic decision to give him 7 years. Let him go, midfielders come and go

Tide turning, was always going to happen, dragging it out isnt great, personally i think its basically done, but lets see.

As ive said previously, if he leaves he leaves, not much us folk can do about it, hope he stays without selling the farm..

Other clubs have million dollar players. DM has finished top4 in the b&f last what, 4-5 years?

His 1.2 or whatever it is, may be overs - but we cant lose a player of his talent and consistency.

He can just ask for 9 or 10 now

Yep, 7 years leaves you open to paying for a player in the last 3 or so years that isn't performing at their best required level. Like Kouta in his latter years.

5 years would be best but I u derstand Dusty is after security.

I'm with you Tigertim.

I'm not sure I believe what Chocco says though BUT if true as being reported the RFC can't be held to ransom over as good of a player that Dusty is.

7 years is too long.

Hampers our future contracts.

Can hamper pay structures.

As much as it pains me if he chances the money we can't possibly match his offer and force a trade.

The AFL will probably shaft and give us an end of first round pick instead of being compensated if he chooses the $ and get a pick like the Dees got for Frawley.

If Martin signs for 7 years at $1.2m - $1.3m , we can kiss goodbye any chance of us getting a free agent for about 3-5 years.

This will be the cost of keeping Martin, and this is why Clarko is not interested.

Happy for 4-5 years at 1.1-1.2 mil. But it was only 2 years ago Dustin was fading out in 2nd half of games so as a 33 yr old running around on that sort of money ? Mmm we find ourselves in a position don't we

Bloody tough call for the club, he goes and that takes away a big chance of us been top 4 for next couple of years, he stays and puts a massive lock on our ability to recruit and maintain improving players. 1.2 for 7 years is crazy for a player who will most likely decline over the next few years and who is at peak price now.

Yeah Dusty by trying to eek out every $$$ he can he is making it very hard to be part of a flag winning list.

Yep, I thought the 5 year contract was on the way out because clubs kept getting caught with underperforming players on big money (eg Hartlett, Tippett) let alone 7 years.

I winder if the length of contract is the sticking point?

Yep.

We need him to be a good side, yet if he takes up too much money then he possibly prevents us from recruiting the required players to make us a good side.

I also still have questions over his performances in big games.

One of the reasons for Hawthorn's sustained success was because their A grade players signing on for less money than they could have got with other clubs. This allowed them to pick up the likes of Frawley and Lake.

We've had no success, but should Dusty do the same to help us keep players and to trade in players?

It's becoming very much a damned if we do damned if we don't . Could be a great chance for Dan to set a precedence re our culture and Club loyalty or it could all turn to *smile*, either way if the media reports are true this is not a great situation for the RFC. Truth will come out eventually
