One of the reasons for Hawthorn's sustained success was because their A grade players signing on for less money than they could have got with other clubs. This allowed them to pick up the likes of Frawley and Lake.
We've had no success, but should Dusty do the same to help us keep players and to trade in players?
Another interesting case is Adelaide. Despite having Davis, Tippett and Dangerfield ripped out, have recovered brilliantly and rapidly to be top of the ladder, 2017 flag favourites (along with Swans IMO). Now they could be losing Lever, Cameron and Kelly?
Sure they want to keep them all. One reason cited that maybe they won't, is because they're tight on contract deals. Many claim Adelaide won't pay up too big, too early, or go overboard at all. [Except Jerka Jenkins held out and might have got under their guard].
Yet, they don't seem in a panic; the team is very united and purposeful, playing beautiful footy. If only our players could kick 75% as well as them. This is a club without any Top 10 picks on their list, yet they dealt easily with the Bummers at ES who have several.
Why so good? Never out of the 8 for very long, or by much. Why so calm and steady despite these player losses? Well, probably because their player selections and list development are so damn good that they back themselves to be able to replace high quality players, and quickly. They've proven it. They've picked the eyes out of Victorian talent right under our noses, often with both mid and low draft picks. Most of their lost players succeed too - look at Jarryd Lyons at BFC.
My point is; whether the Crows win the flag or not, they should go close, looking the real deal ATM. Because team culture comes first; not excessive, absurd contracts to big-head, ego-driven players (or managers). Team success demands sacrifices often, by great players who value that success for their club, with their team-mates, more than just $$$$$$$$$$.
