FORMER Docker Greg Harding has accused clubs of concocting stories about Dayle Garlett's behaviour to undermine his draft prospects.
Garlett, 19, is considered one of the most talented players in this year’s draft pool, but concerns about his ability to conform to an AFL lifestyle continue to dog the dazzling ball-carrier.
The slick left-footer kicked 48 goals playing midfield forward for Swan Districts seniors this season and has lived a more settled lifestyle off-field, studying full-time with the help of his girlfriend.
Swan Districts senior coach Harding labelled Garlett a future 200-game AFL player and said it would be “stupidity” if he was once again overlooked at this year’s draft.
“Dayle has been absolutely superb on and off the field and I’ve heard all the rumours as well and it’s bull----, it’s disappointing,” Harding told the Herald Sun.
“Clubs are starting to do it again, they don’t have the guts to put the kid in the system so to justify their decision they are making stuff up.
“He’s a genuine 200-game AFL player, but it’s not just his talent, it’s how hard he works to prepare himself.
“I think it will be absolute stupidity if they don’t draft him.”
The Herald Sun revealed last month that Port Adelaide had scrubbed Garlett from its list of draft candidates after he was a no-show for a scheduled interview.
Garlett also published photos of himself drinking alcohol and smoking cigarettes on social media on the eve of last year’s draft, enhancing his “bad boy” tag.
Essendon invited him to train at Windy Hill in the off-season, but a late night bender in Perth turned the club off at the last minute.
However, Garlett says he has matured considerably since then and has vowed to reward the club that takes a chance on him in November’s draft.
Harding said Garlett “hasn’t missed a beat” on and off field all year.
“He is only a 19 year old boy and he has come off the biggest kick in the guts in AFL history last year, to tell all his mates he hadn’t been drafted,” Harding said.
“For a kid like that to come back this year and play the footy he has… and that’s with playing through a virus for the last month.
“There were some games when he was absolutely cooked.
“But he has knuckled down, he has done everything right. He’s had an even better year than last year. Someone should take him.”

48 goals playing midfield/forward in the WAFL is a very impressive return for a kid who is only 19.
Is the exact type of player we need.
