Dayle Garlett

So he was top 10 talent last yr and got his life back in order a bit. Is he still first rd material this yr? How far does he slide before clubs start looking at him? 2nd or 3rd rd?

should of taken him last year, every club will be into him now.

In the end no club could take him.
I think some clubs will still overlook him

I agree with you Gus.

There is no doubt he remains a high risk pick.

Great for him if he has got his life back in order and good luck to him, but clubs are loath to burn early round picks, and I am not sure his apparent talent justifies the risk.

I have no doubt he will get drafted though.

5.2 and 13 touches on the weekend.

Will go under 20.

If we hold our first rounder I'd be very tempted, he is basically the exact type we are screaming out for. Do I think FJ would take the plunge? Probably not, he's also the antithesis of every first rounder we've had since JON. Once bitten, twice shy I reckon.

He is dominating against men. 15 games, 246 touches, 94 marks, 42 goals.

Everything we lack. Boy it's tough.

Here's a half thought for our first pick, just curious to see people's response.
First pick won't be super early so what if Jack Watts were available as a trade for our first pick as opposed to using our first pick on perhaps Dayle Garlett? Who would people prefer? The under developed, under achieving Watts or the precocious talented bad boy Garlett who was overlooked by everyone last year. Or would we prefer simply to hope the draft is strong enough at the first round to grab whoever outside the top dozen appears best.

Talent never been a problem.
Does he fit the NDP? That will be the burning question.

If Aaron Edwards can pass the NDP, I think Garlett does.

FJ would relish the chance to bring in another Brandon Ellis too

We've stocked up on that type: we still have Helbig, Knights and Arnott to come in if good enough (O'Hanlon and Madonna too), and can find the Dea/Batch types later in the draft.

You just have to think about the damage Matty White is doing, and think about how little run we had when Bachar was missing, to salivate at the chance to get a linebreaking goalkicker like Dayle Garlett if we got the chance.

But I'd also want Choco on board. Will he end up at the Dees or Brisbane?

Yeah odd recruitment Edwards on that basis and almost bit us on the arse but to Aadwards cred he's turned it around since getting locked up.
Perhaps Garlett can too but he'll cost a bit more than Aadwards I'll guess.
They have to weigh up risk vs reward. We need some magic but I am liking the solid citizen policy too.

He's cleared the first hurdle, showed he can do some hard work. Can he do it over a career and the the highest level? A less risky pick than last year sure (he made the decision for recruiters), but still a risky pick. I'd be interviewing the bejeesus out of him, making it clear he'll be sent to Coburg and made to earn a game, then, have a good hard think about picking him.

His talents are exactly what we need, and he's a year older so would slot in sooner than a bottom age draftee. Its tougher for us given our explicit focus on character. Tough one. I reckon stick to our character tests/ judgements, and if he satisfies those, have a go.

for interest, what are the alternatives? Who are the other classy indigenous fwd/mids in contention for being drafted early this year?

Jarman Impey, hoping he'll be available at our 2nd rounder. Was impressive in the champs

Knightmare from BF's description:

"Damaging forward with some weapons at his disposal. Impey has some unique athletic gifts with some real pace and agility on him. In traffic Impey really stands out because he has more time and space than anyone else and can really step through traffic easily and then breakaway. Impey when given time and space also has some real ability to break the lines. He’s also go the typical crumbing skills and the smarts to know where the ball is going, rove at the bottom of the contest and position himself in the right spots every time. What most stands out with Impey is what he does with ball in hand. Impy is also an excellent user of the footy with his footskills particularly damaging. He has the ability to hit the scoreboard and can do so easily when within range. For a small he also has some excellent strength with his ability to mark overhead excellent for a small. As with so many forwards he can go cold as the team goes cold but when he is finding the ball he’ll do damage and make those touches meaningful ones."

Personally, I think if we have managed to nail every first rounder since 2006, I think we can afford to risk one. The reward could be huge.

Its so tough to know where he may go.

I get the feeling there is no chance in hell we will risk our first pick on Garlett.

I doubt we will too, but if other clubs are considering using thier first pick, I reckon we should be looking right alongside them.

Is there such a shortage of small forwards that we need to use a first or second round pick on them ?
