David Astbury, Thank You

I'm not so sure about that.

I reckon Grimes and Batchelor are playing different roles. Mark Williams, on the review mentioned that they are trying to find another running defender to assist Houli. Grimes, Batchelor and Vlaustin are the guys to help out Houli, it was noticeable how much more these guys were pushing forward on Thursday night.

If Astbury returns, it could be at Newmans expense, with guys like Ellis and McIntosh rolling to half back when our small defenders need a spell.
I'd hope it was at Newman's expense, but I doubt that it will be. Not suggesting that Dave's his replacement, but we'll have to at least replace Lids. He'll be either suspended or injured.

Seems like Grimes is the same size defender.
I see the question as: can you play both Chaplain and Astbury in the same backline?
Grimes can play on a smaller forward - he's got great speed (but he needs to make fewer silly mistakes than he did the other day)
Rance and Chaplain and Astbury might work together but could be caught out by a smaller mobile forward line.

Vlaustin doesn't some into the equation he is quite capable of helping Houli as a running defender. The other 2 grimes and Batchelor I am much less convinced on. You can see that both are trying to improve the attacking sides of their games to provide more run and carry but it doesn't appear all that natural to either. IMO despite some defensive weaknesses Chaplin is much more creative with ball in hand than either of those guys. I think Grimes is more flexible than Batch but he made a couple of poor errors the other night. When the team is selected against the Dogs I expect one of these 2 will be missing.

Not sure a backline of Astbury, Rance, Chaplin, Grimes, Vlaustin and Houli is one that works. 1 too many talls and not enough "run".

4 of those 6 have good run. I think that's a pretty strong backline personally. The question then is which players to interchange with for the backline.

We become too top heavy if Astbury replaces Batch and IMO Grimes must be persevered with. Interesting dilemma.

Grimes has to be persevered with to recapture the form and confidence he had prior to his shocking run with injuries. You could see at times on Thursday night he still hasn't regained that confidence and dash. I will back him in but has to get rid of those silly errors he does at times. I think it's a confidence and continuity thing with him.

Dave may have to wait a while for the type of match up- say a Cloke, Hawkins type! Dave is a stopper, doesn't provide much dash at this point in time. Prior to his injury last year he played his role well! Dave might have to wait for an injury or loss of form to replace Batch or Chaplin.

Grimes can play multiple roles whereas Dave can't at the moment.

I see one of Dave's strengths as being versatile. He can play forward, back and even pinch hit in the ruck. However given his history with injury I'd like to give him a few runs in the VFL to make absolutely sure that's he right before playing him in the seniors.

I agree. Can Chaplin and Astbury play together? Do they collectively provide enough run?

Batchelor had 15 disposals at 86%. Should be given a few to claim a spot.

Berry for the gorillas, Rance a lock.

I can't see a backline with those two and...

Chaplin
Grimmes
Batch.

Just to tall regardless of wether Grimmes can play small or not!

Redpath from the WB is a good matchup for Astbury as he is their biggest and bulkiest forward. He is too big for Grimes. Rance most likely will take Boyd and he is simply too strong for him, as such creating a mis-match in our favour.
If it was my call, Astbury plays.
On another note, the Hawks have in their backline Frawley, Lake and Gibson. We match up well with Astbury, Rance and Chaplin.

Absolutely agree with this. Add Houli, Floss, Batch and Grimes.

Astbury takes the gorilla. Rance the leading forward. Chappy, 3rd man up/ General - Nick Maxwell style.
Maybe switch in Morro for a fast small if needed, otherwise Houli and Floss provide the run, Batch and Grimes mind the mediums and leadups as well as providing switches and run .

Surely something like this would work. Even better for teams without a real big 2nd forward, Rance could be released to LMID. Imagine the drive he would give us unshackled.

Who takes Stringer. I thought that might be Rance.

From reports it sounds like Dave is fighting fit and after a good performance in VFL has to be a shoe-in for our defence next week. Who gets dropped? Newman is unlikely unfortunately so probably Batch although that would be a tad unfair. I just want to see how a backline of Rance, Astbury, Chaplin and Grimes hold up against the talls of he dogs next week

Which tall forwards have the Bulldogs got?

Boyd and stringer. Any others?

Not that tall but crameri hits up on a lead?

Another small/medium forward is Dickson, he can take a grab and a good shot on goal. Grimes might go to him.

Regardless of positional depth, if you're leading our best and fairest halfway through the season, you deserve the be an integral member of our team.

Had a brief chat to Astbury after the game yesterday. He said he doesn't see himself getting picked any time soon because "they don't rate me at the moment".

Was later told second-hand (original source: someone we all love) that he's a sh!t bloke.

Looking at the Hello Newman video sort of confirms this view.
