David Astbury, Thank You

Good news, but now it's a question of team balance.

The forwards have functioned better without TV and Griff together.

Likewise Rance and Chaplin have been great as a dynamic duo even though Astbury was outstanding before he was injured.

I don't think we can play all three.

Chaplin has been more than a little shaky over the past couple IMO.

Not sure how you work that out, he was solid against the Swans and was excellent against the Saints, nigh on BOG. He was horrible in the early part of the season without Rance, but has definitely lifted in the latter half of the season.

Agree. Reads the ball really well which (along with rance) covers his treacle slowness and patchy delivery.

Tigers... KPP glut dilemmas... Who'd have thought...

The way grimes is playing with that pace he is really a tall def that plays small - so yes Astbury fits well into our team.

Good stuff.

His presence provides good coverage in defence. Rance, Astbury and Chaplin cover the talls, Grimes and Batchelor cover the mid-range players. They won't all play every week but we have good depth to account for injuries and loss of form. We should keep others like Dea and Darrou around for at least another year as well, again to try to increase our depth to that of a top 4 team in 2015.

It is the same with Griffiths and Vickery up forward. They won't necessarily both play each week but injuries are covered. What happens if Jack gets a long term injury next year?

It is how the top teams operate. I don't see the Swans worrying about how to fit in all of Franklin, Tippett, Reid and Goodes. The best available 22 always play. It is up to each player to make a convincing enough case that he is best 22 each week.

Chaplin's been bloody great. Was really worried early in the season but his form of late is faultless. Some of his deft tap ons have at times been sublime. Very smart footballer.

Leppa rates him very highly not just as a player but a leader as well. I recall hearing him speak about Dave Astbury in an interview a couple of years ago.

Was expecting the lions maybe having a nibble but perhaps the injuries put them off , or he just wanted to stay a Tiger

Great to hear he has re-signed for 2 years.

Can play forward too, not just a defender.
Can lock down the ultra tall forwards/resting ruck types which no one else can do for us
Good replacement for Chaplin eventually too

Chaplin provides leadership, organisation, run, intercept marks, but can't out body the taller forwards he has to play on when Astbury isn't there. Would have been hopeless on Tippett if Buddy had played. Very few are perfect but many add lots to the team dynamics

Great move by the club signing up Dave for another 2 years. Enjoying the stable look of our backline.

It may not appear, but Astbury is a VERY BIG bodied player. He will not get pushed around eaasily by your Patton, Casboult and Tippett types.
He's also a swingman if/when the need arises, but obviously needs more refinement. Aside from Astbury and perhaps Elton, I dont think the club has a classic swingman of the Harry Taylor type. Griffiths, for all the accolades he's been receiving in the last few weeks has been for his work in the forward half rather than for shutting down a gun opposition forward.
I remember thinking to myself when our season was going down the gurgler that at least we had found a legitimate player in Astbury who had stepped up in performance. Should he maintain his position in the 22 and even improve his output next season, the options available to Hardwick will be countless come game day.
This re-signing and a completely fit Astbury gives the team a different dimension moving forward.

'solid' against the Swans?

Chaps was fumbly on the ground and lacked confidence in the air, particularly when isolated one-on-one. There was no major harm done apart from that bad ground error that cost a goal.

Turned his season around and had a good back arf, but enters the finals with somewhat indifferent form IMO.
