David Astbury, Thank You

There's no point in him sitting on the sidelines twiddling his thumbs if he's fit and ready to go. The more experience he can get, the better. I say if fit, play him.

That's just company line, he's probably required to say that. He clearly isn't reading PRE.
I hope he and the other players never read this site. Would just be an unneeded distraction

Richo said on the Tigers podcast that he definitely wants to come back this year and has worked really hard on upper body strength while he has been out.

Good to hear.

Once he gets his confidence back he will be a monster.

Imagine with Rance and Grimes at their best (I am not mentioning Chaplain deliberately) being able to through Astbury up forward to pinch hit during games.

Unstoppable

The problem is Dimma/the club's version of 'fit' (Lids, Ivan, Cotch, Riewoldt playing when they are obviously not right) appears to be very different from most other people's definition of 'fit'.

And it wouldn't be like it's the first time we've rushed a player back and set them back further because of it.

Classic how everything is Dimmas fault, i guess the team doctors mouths are painted on... I beleive there are guidelines that the players asscoiation and AFL have put in place with regards medical clearances etc...

Understand everyone has an opinion as i do but they need to follow the advice of the medical team and the players also...

The problem is that the coach and the team are developing a bit of a track record for playing players hurt and rushing them back.

Carn - The only one this year that stood out for me was Jacko, that was silly as he is an improtant player for us in my opinion.. I think Newy also went down after an absence but thats more likely to happen to older gents i guess.. Im not argueing that RFC rushes (what they perceive) our good players back, but i can hardly blame the coach in totality..

The Jacko one was way too predictable - bloke was subbed off and looked very sore, apparently didn't train all week, and yet Supercoach selected him - result? Reinjured, misses 3 weeks.
And yes you can blame the coach; whilst the medical team may say they are ok, and the player "puts his hand up", at the end of the day, it's Dimma's call to pick them in the 1's or ease them back through the 2's - or, god forbid, given them a further week just to be on the safe side (never an option with dimmer).

Jake King earlier this year was another example.
Newy straight back into 1's when 1/2 a game in the 2's would have been better.

Last year Cotchin, Reiwoldt, Vlaustin, and on she goes.
Previous year he broke down Maric.
The coach does not learn.
Man management poor.

I would like to see Astbury back this year but only if he is 100% fit and had a run in the 2nds. His early season form has shown that he has the potential to be a club stalwart for many years providing he doesn't keep getting injured.
I just hope his knees don't let him down again as that could end his career before it has really started

Let's not forget Morris this year. The shoulder causes him pain, but it's not bad enough to keep him out, however it does impact on his game, yet if he hadn't been suspended this week he would have played. He'll be back next week too, you can bet on that. He played Deledio when he knw the achilles bothered him. Jackson also kept playing injured prior to last year.

I don't think there is any need to bring Astbury back.

I know he is not contracted. Give him 2 years, back him in to recapture his form of this year and get him right for 2015.

Just no need.

I heard Grimes mention in an interview that Astbury hopes to return this season. Now the member's email about next week's open training session has an image of the Berry front and centre.

I'd be surprised if he was brought back in for a pressure game late in the season given how little football he's had and perhaps some issues regarding agility, endurance and confidence in the knee - let alone decision-making and skills under pressure after such a long break.

Dimma's been very conservative in his selection decisions for the past 2 years. Is he going to break the mould next week?

he's been conservative TBH, but not above bringing underdone best 22 players back.

personally I hope they don't risk it. great comeback though :)

If he's right to go, we'll need him against the Swanth. No one wants to see Chappy on Tippett, except John Longmire.

True we need someone of Dave's size and ability since Grimes and Batch are only marking time but bringing in Dave after him playing no footy for over half a season he is never going to be match fit. At this stage I would stick with Chappy as the next best option. I would rather Dave waits and has a good preseason then an injury free 2015 onwards
