David Astbury, Thank You

Watch the Doggies and you will see most backmen get burnt by Jones on the lead. He is not a great contested Mark. I will go out on a limb and say that Rance is almost the best in the AFL at closing the gap on leading key forwards. He is not a great body on body back. He would have been great to have for Jones.
Yep, Rance probably would of played on him but we had Astbury on him for much of the game and was exposed plenty. Maybe Grimes should have been given him a go but Vlaustin going down - Hunter etc restricted options.

Is Astbury suited to playing on a Cloke? Is a bit of a worry when neither Chaplin or Astbury as 2nd and 3rd key backs can handle Jones.

5m behind? Must have huge eyes to see that from Level 1.
Have you watched many games from there?, I find it easy to see anywhere at docklands, due to the angle of the seating.

As I said, I've never commented on anything you've ever written about Astbury, so leave me out of this particular little b!tch fight thanks Jamo.
I was trying to be efficient and give you both a bit back with 1 slap ;-)

No hard feelings at the end of teh day we all have different views, but we all just want to see the Tigers win.
'
I wish I was wrong , because we would have a great game day coach and a beast of a backman if I was.

Go Tigers

I stand by my comments, I was at the Carlton game and I am of the opinion Astbury was terrible in respect to his ability to stop his man. The same issues were evident in rnd 1 and rnd 3, too slow to be a key defender in the modern game, if that opinion is stupidity in your eyes, so be it.

Astbury was good against carlton. Waite is a good contested mark but Astbury had some telling moments when the pressure was on. I like his composure.

As for being too slow for full back I reckon Ben Rutten has done OK despite a lack of toe. I don't think Merrett is quick. Jamison is not quick. Harry Taylor is not quick. And I assume Bulldogs supporters would be wanting to drop Morris after he was clearly not able to contain Jack in the second half, he was caught behind too often and if he can't keep up with Jack then he has no future? No defender can stop a forward if the supply is good enough. How long has it taken Zac Dawson to become a decent footballer?

The ability to read the play, read the flight of the ball and body positioning is the key to good defending and Astubry is showing some good signs in this respect. A 195cm KD is super important to our structure, I hope they persevere with him.

Haha - this surely has too much sense on it for some posters on here. Totally agree, when you have midfielders streaming into the forward line with next to no pressure on them it is very hard to defend.

Agree wholeheartedly. Plenty to work with Dave imo.

Spot on. There are certain times when a backman just gets caught out and there's nothing he could have done.
(But it never seems to stop the knuckleheads behind me at the 'G who still yell out things like "why didn't you get in front you *smile* useless so and so")

We need Dave to cement his spot as our monster forward go to man , this week against Cloke will go a long way in answering some of our questions . Always hoped Dave and Griffo could turn into the best swingman combo in the land.

There are certain backmen that get caught out every time too, Astbury.

Anyway happy to agree to disagree, I don't rate him.

Let's hope he has a big game on Cloke.
The Only way to nullify Cloke is to force him taking grabs outside 50.
Need an agile defender running off him, forcing him to chase and a slower taller defender plugging the gaps.
wrestling him in the goal square or giving him space in the forward 50 means goals to Cloke, if he kicks straight that is.

If I was the coach I would be thinking of a way to execute the above and run Cloke Ragged.

Grimo will assist.

I would have played Grimes or Batch on him and told them to run to the centre every chance they get, tell Astbury and Chap to hold the 50.
If Cloke is leading out of the Square he will destroy Astbury, big mistake last year was having Rance wrestle him in the goal square, Rance should have been instructed to run off him.

I believe in Dave. Even if Rance was fit, I'd rather Dave on Cloke. He holds Cloke, we should win. Simple.
