No last week he was a superstar, the pressure he put on Waite from behind ensured waite didn't kick straight.

Agree on Rance.....though Batchelor is a lazy fat arse who thinks he's too cool for school!

Batchelor's problem there is lack of height. He's 188. He doesn't play tall either. Hardwick's tried it a few times and it ends disastrously. Until Rance is fit, Astbury is the best option unfortunately.

David got his pants well an truely pulled down this week against a Hack in Jones, purely and simply David was not fast enough, played behind his man the entire game.
Probably more noticeable this week as his apponant kicked a little straighter.

Astbury is too slow, and not up to it, or am I speaking diarrhea again.

You blokes got stuck right into me over this thread and the hardwick cannot coach thread, I feel like 2/0 my way at the moment, and wrote this to you so you know I am enjoying it, what i am not enjoying is seeing duds get a game for my team and cost wins, Astbury was one of the worst players this week against a rabble.

Can somebody tell me how many times Astbury got beaten one on one the other day, I honestly don't know, I just know Jones kicked 3 an Astbury wasn't on him at the time, I didn't actually notice his game much, I know Jones is quick on the lead an takes the odd clunk but doesn't seem to have to many tricks an I would hope Astbury could control him

My mate sat lvl 1, paid $120 , sais Astbury was 5 m behind his man all game, and that he and Vickery clearly worst 2 players and more or less cost the game.
I think the coach cost the game through his inability to react to a counter to his game plan, but anyway.

Astbury has some skills, issue is he is too slow, that is all I am saying about him, he is not up to the pace of AFL.
A key defender at AFL level needs the strength and pace to make every contest, play on their man and not behind them, Astbury cannot do this and will never be able to do this. It is not possible for him to get faster.

Grimes has been terrible so far, be lucky to hold his own spot!

I don't tend to overanalyse the game to much. I go to barrack and to enjoy myself.

But just as an observation, I didn't think Astbury (or Vickery for that matter) were our worst on Saturday. I was more disappointed with S.Edwards, King, Martin, Newman, Grigg (I'm no serial basher either), Stephenson and perhaps also Petterd (after such a strong game v Carlton), Conca & Ellis.

I was also really disappointed with our collective lack of run.

I didn't leave the game cursing Astbury at all.

You bagged Astbury after the Carlton game, said he was terrible. He was near best on ground.

Then you said Hardwick should be assessed on a three strike policy. In your world, three comebacks against Carlton meant we should tear up his contract and get a new coach.

I pointed out the vast stupidity of these observations.

They were both imbecilic then and still are.

Didn't have a good day. Fumbled a bit and made some key errors. Unfortunately when you play in his position an error usually means a goal so very high price to pay.

Was also caught upfield too much and with too much space behind him exposed a little for lack of pace.

Had a few credits in the bank from rounds 1&2, so prepared to give him another chance, especially with Rance still out.

I stand by my comments, I was at the Carlton game and I am of the opinion Astbury was terrible in respect to his ability to stop his man. The same issues were evident in rnd 1 and rnd 3, too slow to be a key defender in the modern game, if that opinion is stupidity in your eyes, so be it.

I left the game questioning Astbury's speed/reaction of the mark. He got burnt by Jones on quite a few leads and getting turned around. People bag Rance but he's our best one-on-one backman by some way.

That said, didn't think he was awesome but wasn't inspiring either - few were.

Watch the Doggies and you will see most backmen get burnt by Jones on the lead. He is not a great contested Mark. I will go out on a limb and say that Rance is almost the best in the AFL at closing the gap on leading key forwards. He is not a great body on body back. He would have been great to have for Jones.
