David Astbury, Thank You

Sorry if I have upset people, I am not an Astbury hater, infact this is the first thread I have commented on him for quite some time, I just think you guys are pumping up his tyres too much, hope it doesn't all come crashing down around you when he gets a few bags kicked on him, because he is too slow to make a spoil.
Hope I am wrong, but for me the jury is out, still wouldn't have him in best 22.

Dave is earning his strips. The kid can play, he just needs an uninterrupted crack at it. Thought his 1%s last Thurs were terrific and often when Carlscum were pumping the ball into their F50, Dave was the most composed of the Tiger defenders. Wouldn't mind him lining up on Cloke against the Pies, even if Rance is fit.

.Astbury was a rock. He makes up for a lack of pace with his reading of the play. Surprised at the negativity towards Dave, he and Griffiths are the big highlights so far in 2014.
No argument from me on this remark. Reckon the big Assa had an excellent game.
His much maligned timid little Griffinator appears to have realised he's got wings n teeth and having some fun learning how to use them.
Totally enjoying watching these to young fellas uninjured n starting to play the type of footy we've been hoping for the last couple of years. With their youth n inexperience factor, there will be the odd bump game yet, but the performance over these two early games should be their baseline, onwards n upwards to even better things as they grow into their maturity.

I remain unconvinced/uncertain as to Astbury's long-term place in the team.

That said, I am comfortable with the selection panel giving him a consistent opportunity through the first five or six rounds of the season to see what he is capable of contributing to the team.

I will say that I didn't previously rate him much at all, but I am prepared to concede that he has been a reasonable contributor in the first two rounds.

Waite may have the brain of a stegosaurus and the decision-making acumen of Peter Hoare after a tequila drinking contest but he can jump, he's quick and he's a genuine markologist. He took seven grabs - mostly up the ground - while Dave took a game high ten. He had thirteen touches to Dave's eighteen. Despite our man's close checking while being bombarded with chaos ball in the second half he only gave away one free kick.
I'd say that's a good game on a dangerous player. Dave's played something like twelve games in three years. Fair but of upside.

Agree on all this....but his lack of speed is the biggest concern. I don't expect a key defender to be Usain Bolt but a little bit of speed wouldn't hurt.

Can't fault his determination or willingness to stick to the task.

like the improvement he is showing . Just needs to get the grigg factor out of his kicking , tends just to float them up in the air .

needs to learn how to stab pass.
Don't see that too often now. :(

Astbury gets caught too often looking for a 2nd or 3rd option, when the 1st option was probably the best. Needs to be more decisive and to dispose of the ball faster than he does.
