David Astbury, Thank You

The reason I rated him so high was the fact he kept his feet in the contest whilst Cloke sprawled which is a sign of strength by the young lad

Has been competitive n composed in his practice matches so far. Perhaps, along with the Griff, Assa is now finally free of injury niggles and at the development point for a tall player where little cameos n glimpses of potential become the game day standard.

It seems Astbury plays if Grimes doesn't. I can't see a backline comprising all four of Astbury-Rance-Chaplin-Grimes. Good to have options I suppose.

It's ok if they are mobile enough. The only reason short guys get picked is because they are more mobile and more in-under than the big guys.

Astbury has had a full preseason and his performance in the practise matches has shown that he is back. Good foot and hand skills, good field positioning and good movement. A cert for round 1 and if he continues to maintain his improvements will be hard to shift out of our best 22

Along with Madonna the find of the pre season.

Each team has a gorilla forward and Dave's form as the tall back has been first class this summer. Maybe its all clicked.

I remember watching Collingwood's Reid and Brown at VFL level in their first two years and they looked unremarkable. It all clicked for them in their early 20s and they look class defenders (and forwards in Reid's case).

Fingers crossed this type of form is permanent.

You've left out the mint sauce lamb shanks, reckon the Griffinator has easily played as well as these two over the pre season and steps into the Hamsters role quite nicely seeing as the Hamster has elevated into the number one ruck role with the Eevan having a blown tyre.
Kind of a weird feeling on the back of such a consistent season last year seeing these three slot into the side so well.

At the rate were going our best 22 is going to have 27 players

This is the first year since 1982 that we have genuine depth. I don't believe the class of our top 12 is enough to be a real premiership threat, but we should be competitive against any team for the entire season...and I'll take that after 30 years of mediocrity.

The question is, can snag a premiership before GWS win 10 in a row?

Loving Dave's pre season. He's moving so much better than last season and it must be giving him a lot of confidence. And he looks so calm. Between him and Chappy we've got more serenity than Bonnie Doon in the back half.

I always thought people knocked him because of a lack of pace, not skill.

I see people on here recently saying he is moving well.

Does that translate to better pace?

Watching the game, he didn't seem faster but quicker. He started moving before his opponent would. Just reads it well.

Astbury's another who has been dogged by injury. You cannot under-estimate the importance of a strong pre-season for a player's fitness to carry through the season and confidence. Astbury has always had a lot of talent, just hasn't had the chance fitness wise to put it together. Let's hope his form continues.

For me, it's more about changing direction than straight line speed. Reaction time's probably a part of it too. I don't know whether he's actually picked up speed or strength, perhaps it's just the confidence he's gained from a good pre season with plenty of k's in legs. Maybe lack of AFL games affected his reading of the tempo last year. Whatever it is, he moved like Nureyev on Friday.

Need a decent nickname fire Dave if he's going to make it.

Charger for mine.

Asbury, arseberry,hemorrhoids, hema, hemi,charger.

Lame really.

Maybe "Dave" works for it's blandness.
