David Astbury, Thank You

his first hit out in a year that he probably needs to show something

4 out 10 in my opinion

would want to build on that performance quite a lot to convince me he's up to it

Dare I say it but he was equal to Chappy as our best backman last night can't say same for Rance

Poor kicking, slow and out muscled by smaller forwards. Big concern

hmm - I actually watched him closely at times and saw him outmuscle to mark in defence and he did some pretty good spoils as well.

I am not concerned - thought for a big man he did Ok (one mistake in the last 2 mins the exception) so I still think he is pushing for rd 1 selection.

You need to remember it was the first praccy game, humid and sweaty conditions - the number of turnovers and kicking out on the full was pretty high by both teams. The tigers didn't get out of second gear and nearly matched a committed team who, make no mistake, really wanted to win.

Both teams had very different expectations from this game and even if dimma said he wanted to win, with the TAB on the game, there is no way he is allowed to say anything else.

I agree', I thought Dave was solid and did his rnd 1 hopes no harm. Without being great he wasn't beaten on the night in any aerial contest. I predict he will often take the number 1 tall forward this season allowing chapman and Rance to provide more offensively.

I can't believe Dave hasn't had his personal thread updated - he was very very good yeatrday

Whilst hard to tell from the small screen, that Cloke was somewhat quiet and definitely DIDN'T DOMINATE, I would say Astbury must have followed instruction rather well, cos that would have surely been one of the coaching panel's goals this week.

I agree that Dave did well overall and appears to be heading in the right direction.
However, had Cloke kicked straight he could have easily had 6 yesterday.

I will give him the benefit of the doubt (and all of our defenders to some extent) due to the lack of defensive pressure further up the ground whenever the Pies got on the break. The team has caught well short two weeks in a row in this regard. We really need to sort this out pronto!

It seems Astbury plays if Grimes doesn't. I can't see a backline comprising all four of Astbury-Rance-Chaplin-Grimes. Good to have options I suppose.

Dave's a footballer, first and foremost, so I think he could cover a number of scenarios because he's smart and reads it well. I always liked him forward (and still think it's his best position) but I think he's our best hope as a gorilla killer.

I think they can all play assuming they are all fit and in form. Grimes is a different player to Astubry who takes the tallest forward. Both Rance and Grimes can play on the smaller or mid sized forwards. Take yesterday where Collingwood had Reid, Cloke, Lynch/White - these where all taller than our defenders so Astubry needs to play IMO. Then Grimes gets a game if his fitness and form warrants it, he could easily play on the 4th tallest forward or on wing.

He would have kicked 6 with only 5 kicks? Seems plausible. Cloke kicked a couple from marks that Silvagni wouldn't have stopped because the Pies just streamed through the middle.

Finally, Cloke kicking 3 from 5 shots is at least 1 more than he'd normally get.

Ok, sorry. 5 then. Point is that a forward's bad kicking for goal makes a defender's efforts look more impressive.
In the same way we have been let off plenty of times in the past because Franklin has bad kicking days.
Besides, I think I qualified my comments by saying that there was not enough pressure from up the field.

Yeh but Astbury was only beaten once or twice when given a chance. Our defensive pressure will get better. Cloke is a *smile* kick on a good day. In fact that was a good day. He only missed twice from a fair distance out. Astbury had a good game overall, was rarely beaten when the midfield gave him a fighting chance. He's not going to win every one on one against the best contested grab in the league.
