David Astbury, Thank You

maybe its a choice between owning the air or owning the ground.
We can have both. Grimes is excellent in the air and on the ground. Houli and Flossy can spend a bit of time upfield. Either getting more of the ball around the centre improves our chances of scoring.

Versatility is the key. Depending on who we play, and what forward structures they like to run with, we should have a defensive structure to cover all teams. The stated mission of improving defensive pressure on a ground wide basis needs this flexibility. I think his addition allows our mids (HF+C+HB) to transition from offense to defence with more certainty, and predictability. Hopefully this really cuts down on opposition marks in our F50, something we weren't particularly good at preventing last year, especially against finals teams.
Dave's form preseason has been an absolute highlight for me, and will go a long way to improving and strengthening us. Reads the play so well, makes good decisions with reliable disposal. Add Grimes's potential into the mix, and that is becoming a pretty formidable defensive unit.

A lot of love for Frawley out there, however his rumoured $800k asking price is too much for us. Sure, physically he's a little more imposing than Dave, tactically, Dave's a least his equal. A hell of a lot cheaper as well.
His contract comes up for renewal at the end of the season, and as we've stood by him in his injured period, I'm sure Dave will do us a solid and negotiate amicable terms. Good bloke, club loves him.

Yep,well said hungry one.The club has showed a lot of faith in Dave obviously knowing what talent he has when fully fit.Could surprise a lot of people this season if he stays on the paddock.

Yep. Sending lots of positive thoughts Dave's way for an injury free season.

Has a footy brain and that's exactly what you need in defence.
That knee cap injury screwed 2 years if his career.
Hopefully now he is 100% because he can play

Yep, will be pleasantly surprised though. Still question his defensive one on one work, but he is improving and really all we ask I guess. Like a few others, like him more as a forward.

As silly as it sounds Dave could well be one of our most important players, if he can do the gorilla job well, it will make a gigantic difference to our back line an the roles others can play...good luck to the lad he no doubt deserves a fair crack at it

Not silly at all.

Having Astbury down back will allow Rance to play his more natural running game as opposed to playing deep FB.

Rance will have a great season if Astbury keeps his spot IMO.

Love to see this guy get a bit of mongrel in him... Morris type mongrel.. 195cm defender who can keep the "gorillas" quiet would be a HUGE plus for our backline

How many talks have Morris type mongrel?

Astbury, Griffiths, Elton, McBean .

If 2 of these 4 step up and become regular quality AFL players it will make a massive difference to us. We become contenders imo.

Thats why i am really glad to see Dave and Griff in the team. Both just entering the age group when talls really start to step up if they are going to make it.

I'd like to see him get a decent go. He's quite versatile. Can play either back or forward and although he'd be far from first option can even pinch hit in the ruck if we're desperate. Have to be an upgrade on McGuane or Tuck for that role in years gone by.

I hope he plays well enough to keep Grimes in the magoos. Would mean he's playing fantastic footy.
Be nice if there was a question about who to play and eventually keeping both of them because they add so much to the defence.

With Astbury in the side, Rance is able to play the role Grimes would otherwise. The way I see it, if Astbury is playing well then Rance is Grimes' competition. So he's got no hope. The beauty of it is though that all these guys are versatile... Their flexibility will be invaluable

Exactly, we only need 2 of these guys to hit their straps and our list is looking the goods.

If 3 or all of them improve to the point they should play seniors then that is a massive bonus and we will have some quality trade value.

Good to see him trying hard. Looks a lot more mobile than last season and hopefully can strengthen his position with solid games.
