David Astbury, Thank You

What do we think about Dave?

For mine I just can't see him making it. Okay mark and an okay kick. However he doesn't possess enough speed or mobility. He's not very strong but thats something that can be improved.

For mine he's a trade or delist.

Astbury has a couple of things running for him, being:
1. He is still 22yo and is another 2 years from clicking time, and
2. Is benefited by our shortage of KPPs on our list.

Astbury has the versatility to be able to play either forward or back, but has made a slow recovery from a major knee injury after a promising debut in 2010.
I still believe that we rush the development of our talls and expect them to stand up consistently at AFL level too early in their careers.

2013 was a recovery year for Astbury, 2014 should be the season to indicate whether he pushes on from his recovery.
Remember the mistake with Rodan!

If we had a surplus of genuine junior and developing KPPs on the list, I'd consider trading Astbury.
But we don't, so let's put that silly idea away until we see junior KPPs overtaking him.

Fair post, Phanto.

I'd be keen to keep him if he had a couple of decent attributes that I can see blossoming. Unfortunately I just can't see it with Dave.

I will give Griff, McBean, Elton and Vickery all the time in the world they need because I can see they each have good tools that could be great at AFL level once they click.

Don't get me wrong, I'm not suggesting a trade/delist because I don't think Astbury has done enough or not played enough senior games. I totally understand KPP's take time, but if they don't have much to work with, then they just don't have much to work with. There isn't much you can do. I think Astbury may fall into that catergory.

Time will tell I guess though.

Yes, list management has much to do with it.

I've argued on PRE many times that reserving only 13 places for all KPP forwards, defenders and rucks - junior, developing & mature - is NOT enough.
And this is where our depth in talls falls down.

Logic tells you that in a team, 2 ruckman, 2 tall forwards & 3 tall defenders extended over two teams means a minimum of 14, and that's not accounting for injury.

According to my model, I've always set aside 16 places, which allows you a good mix of mature, developing & juniors over each of your 191-194, 195-199, and 200+cm groups, over forwards, defenders and rucks.

191-194cm 195-199 200+
Mature (25-28) 2 1 1
Developing (22-24) 3 2 1
Junior (18-21) 3 2 1

Of course, it rarely works exactly to the model, but you can compensate as long as you keep the overall numbers up to around 16.

Far out, the amazing amount of slack cut for Ben Griffiths does not get spread across anyone else.

23 year old, 195cm coming off a major knee injury with 29 games. And has shown some form.

Make or break 2014 but deserves a injury free run at it. Unlike Griffiths, has shown a willingness to compete.

Fair enough.

Look, I'm probably being a bit harsh, but I just don't see it.

Very happy to be proved wrong.

To show how little I know I also didn't think Ellis would be quick enough to make it as a mid, and thought he would only be a role player.

Extremely neat by foot and doesn't panic.

Keeper for at least one more campaign. Hopefully more.

I like what ive seen in the 1's so far. at 23 and 195, youde be nuts to move him on, unless you were gonna replace with a better prospect +195 at <25

Very slow and terrible agility is what I noticed this year

Has to be given another year but long way off at this stage imo

Full pre season and a very important year coming up for Dave

Hopefully he can make it, we need him to

What's happened to this kid? His first year was "light at the end of the tunnel" stuff. Then,
1)They gave him number 12,
2) super coach made him a defender, when he showed more as a forward
3)Did his knee, that took 19 years to get back from
4) he lost heaps of movement and came back with no speed and looked too big..
agree toolzips can't see how he will turn it around.. But always remember Hansen ( one of my favourites) had a ripper year, so if he can Ashbury Can too

Awful agility and no speed. Nice kick though. I reckon, at best, if he is to carve out a career its as 3rd tall back or forward. Trouble is down back he gets beaten to the ball ( but had a rep for being a good spoiler a couple of years ago) , up forward he doesnt get enough of the ball!
