David Astbury, Thank You

A better game this week and looked more solid. Less punching and more marks (7). His tactical positioning was OK but he is a bit slow but a good preseason may help. Combines well with Chaplin and Rance. Deserves his place on match day on that performance even with Grimes coming back.

Yep. Was pretty good.
I liked his game and agree was better for the run. I think he has held down that spot in defence well and has moved past Pettard for mine.

He does have elite disposal by hand and foot. I think he will be happy to get through the season injury free and can attack the pre season with confidence. Would like to see him get a few more games this year but may struggle when Grimes returns.

I would like to see how we go with Astbury and Grimes in the same side. Let's be big in defence rather than undersized. Rance and Grimes can play small and will monster opponents. DA can take the ruck types, Chappy and Rance can wax on the keys and Grimey can destroy the mediums.

Agree and would love him to keep getting games - I actually see him also taking McGuannes spot in the forward half and can swing back into defence if required

I also agree. He has a real chance to cement a spot in the team next week. I don't think we should make any changes in the backline, regardless of the blues small forward line. He needs to show that he can play small if he needs to. IMO this week will define where he is at, and i have high hopes.

That's an idea if it means keeping him in the team. A bit slow at the moment to replace Pettard but up forward and pinch hit in defence is worth a punt

agree. at the start of the year i saw a backline including Rance, Chaplin, Grimes and Griff. Griff is a long way away but Astbury is looking ok.
Playing the 4 talls still gives us enough run i reckon and could allow us to dominate the air.

Yep, something the good judges have been saying for a while. :hihi

In an ideal world I reckon Astbury becomes the number 2 tall and Rance moves to the third tall position.

The ideal set up is 3 talls who between them have the versatility to cover a variety of forward lines. I have posted this before but this set up would allow Grimes to come in and play as a true swing man in defence. A bloke who plays on talls and smalls as well providing offensive run. The Dustin Fletcher role.

Then you chuck in Morris, Houli or Newman and it becomes a very solid defensive unit.

Finally got around to watching the replay and thought he was more than solid. Considering his history he'll be a quality player.

Think he might be the designated gorilla tamer. With Chaplin the chop-off specialist, Rance the scrapper & dasher, and Grimes the flexible option, it's got a nice balance about it. Add a resident maniac in Morris and any of three or four setup kickers and you've got yourself a backline.

We sure have.

Love Juffa's analysis but that was an obvious call. Can't believe Dimma rolled the dice with Jimmy Petterd on White. Had to play DA or Griff, regardless of form.

Griff not coming on, along with Grimey's injury, has really hurt us. As you've said Leysy, nearly all bigs are gifted games early on - he was for a couple of years, started to earn them last year, and got dropped like a hot potato this year. Structurally we are much better with Griff in the side. He got dropped after Hampson kicked one goal and the next week Beau bloody Maister had a birthday against us and we've been vulnerable to the three-tall set-up ever since.

If our defenders in descending order of size are:

Griff
Chappy
Rance
Grimes

even Hawthorn's forwards would have a battle on their hands.

Chappy would dominate if Griff was on the biggest bloke and Rance could cover for him when needed. Grimey would eat Jack Gunston for breakfast.
