David Astbury, Thank You

I think it's the right move Collo. Cloke's not quick. DA can body with him while Chappy, Rance and Grimey take turns going 3rd/4th up. Just gotta make sure they clear it away from Collingwood's crumbers.

Astbury will be playing for rest of the year. If Tiges play Collingwood in first week of the finals they reckon he will at least has the size and shape to compete with Travis Cloke as Rance and Chaps are undersized compared to big Clokey.

He plays one ok game and all of a sudden he can do the job on Cloke?

Cloke will monster him like a rag doll and kick 10.

Not saying that at all but for shape and size Astbury could potentially hold his own and not be monstered. Rance doesn't have the physical stature to compete with Cloke. I reckon Astbury would be well beaten this year but in future years Richmond are hoping he can be that man to take the genuine monster in Cloke. Richmond People who I have spoken to have told me this.

Prefer Chaplin on him myself.

In an ideal world I reckon Astbury becomes the number 2 tall and Rance moves to the third tall position.

The ideal set up is 3 talls who between them have the versatility to cover a variety of forward lines. I have posted this before but this set up would allow Grimes to come in and play as a true swing man in defence. A bloke who plays on talls and smalls as well providing offensive run. The Dustin Fletcher role.

Then you chuck in Morris, Houli or Newman and it becomes a very solid defensive unit.

Noticed that on the replay, 4:56 to go in the last, the ball thumped out for a throw in he raises his hands to the bench. a few moments later at a ball up he seen stretching the hamstrings.

Might be nothing in it but the Dave is injury prone... If tweaked rest him, need the fittest squad possible for September.

What do people think of Davids efforts against the Hawks?

My reading of it was that he fitted in well into the defensive set.

He is a tall who is obviously still developing, but he kept his opponents quiet like the rest of the backs did. Didn't look out of place.

Played 85% game time, 70% efficiency.

Players like Gunston, Breust and Smith often tear sides apart, he helped there a lot I think.

Also, when facing so many talls like Hale, Franklin and Roughhead, Astbury's height really helps cover them off, whist he is still pretty useful against smaller forwards.

Got better as the game went on. Once the rain came his lack of speed was less of an issue. That said Gunston has been on fire lately and Dave gave him no room at all.
Still think he will be gone once Grimes returns.

For DA to the next step as defender he needs to pluck marks against the forward his on.
Like lake, Taylor & Reid.
I noticed on sateday his first thing was to always go for the punch.
If can start to mark he will become a good defender for us

Was he always slow or did injury slow him down I wonder? If the later, can he find some more pace because that is the issue with him

Played well and until his form drops or injuries take place he should remain in the side.

IMO really important for Dave's confidence he gets another senior game this week.
1/. Came in to a big pressure game and played well against Hawks after good form in the ressies for some weeks.
2/. Grimes should play another week in the ressies for his own good.
3/. Was very disappointed Dimma dropped Arnot after his terrific debut game and do not want him to repeat the same mistake with Astbury, who is finally getting continuity and regaining touch after a tough run with injuries.

Whatever David does for the rest of the year is a bonus. What he showed against quality opposition on Sat suggests he is worth persevering with after another pre season into his body

Yes pace is the main concern. He just has to find other ways to be productive.

Has lovely hands in traffic as well.

beat me to it Dave. His composure in heavy traffic, especially considering he hasn't played much in the seniors for a long time, was very good last week.

There's No depth, never has been.
Wake up people our recruiting is still substandard past pick 5.
If you think McGuane is bad just wait to see the Astbury.

Do I detect a change in opinion?
