David Astbury, Thank You

Is he fit though?

I saw him last week and thought he looked well underdone.

Found it hard to make any sort of assessment against the Bombers.

Thus the need for a big pre season. Then we can make an informed decision on his direction at the end of 2013.

66 I think you are exactly right. Useless today. Miller would have done more than Astbury. VERY VERY DISAPPOINTED with his effort.
Agreed. Looks like a footballer but doesn't play like one. 2013 is make or break as a key forward. No more excuses. Joke he was given the No. 12 jumper.

Reminds me of Dan Foley in the 1980's - Walked like Michael Roach; kicked like Michael Roach; built like Michael Roach (maybe even bigger) but could he play anywhere near like Michael Roach - Not a Chance. Played one good game at Windy Hill (kicked 5 as did Roach) and faded without a trace.

Astbury looks like he could be a player - but is he? I ssupect not. Once again - will be happy to be proved wrong and humbly apologise. Won't be holding my breath though.

He really struggled with the ball on the deck today, took Jackson amount of time to pick it up

Hopefully he can improve, as he was out for nearly 2 years

I was chatting with one of his junior coaches last week who said 'we thought he'd be better than what he is'. Personally his inability to find the pill comes as no surprise as the Messiah calls during his debut season were spectacularly premature.

Still, after a lengthy lay off, let's hope the benefits of a full pre-season will bear fruit in 2013.

Looks too big. Needs to reshape his body.

Hopefully the mobility improves over the summer.

Yeah, not much to like at the moment but has to get at least another year. Gotta be patient.

Really? I reckon he looks skinny next to other forwards including our own.

They need to make sure his knees is right then let him do some extra aerobic work and maybe put on a couple of kilos.

I thought he lead to the right spots. It doesn't help him when jacks going for the Coleman

He played about 12 games? in his first year - quite a few of those down back where he looked okay and showed good kicking skills. When Griff was played in the forward line during that period where we won 4 in a row in 2010 he got very little of the ball and also in his few games last year. Putting him down back has meant that he has been able to get move involved in games and we have seen the potential for him down there.

I think Dave has more upside on Post and has missed a bunch of footy through injury.

I thought Astbury grew a bit as the game wore on. The turning point was when he gathered the loose ball in the left footer's pocket and lined up. Never going to miss the goal. He hit up several times after that and was ignored (fair enough). Surprised team mates by finding holes.

As for being slow, that was my take. But he ran down and laid out Whatsisname beautifully.

Improver, for mine.

Astbury will be the most dominant CHF in AFL in 3 years time. has more footy nous than any other tall in our side. Big call I know - but cant wait to see him blossom.

Wasn't that enthusiastic about Astbury even in 2010 when the club was pushing his case for a Rising Star nom. Has now managed 7 games in two years (not his fault) and will be 22 in Feb. But there was a moment in the Port game when he was chasing the ball in the forward pocket, stooping to pick it up, when he was the absolute spitting image of Nick Riewoldt, right down to the number 12 on his back. The resemblance was uncanny.
