David Astbury, Thank You

I guess we won't know if he's a finals type footballer until he plays...football. Good to see him back.

Looks like an athletic tall footballer - needs to compete harder and start playing like one. Big pre-season and 2013 ahead. With Chaplin coming and Post looking like a Centre Half Back and nothing else, Astbury has to be a forward.

I liked his work off the ball. I thought he provided a couple of good shepherds for riewoldt and also lead away from riewoldt which created space in our forward line. He should play next week too

Agree.Thought he played alright considering the length of time he's been out.Lot's to work with there i feel.Well done Dave and welcome back! :clap

It was great to see him out on the ground Friday night. Also liked to see him up forward. Bring on a big preseason and he could be the third tall forward we are looking for.

There's no doubt he's got composure & skill...big problem is he's seemed to have lost a yard of pace post knee injury

Hopefully not or hopefully he can regain it after another pre-season, as he probably lacks a yard for his level of bulk

needs some luck with injuries.. needs 2 pull pre seasons under his belt to the asses if he will live up to the potential.

Thought he might have added a little more upper body strength/definition in the last season and a half, especially with limited leg work he would have been able to do.

Missed about a year and a half of senior footy, was good to see him get the chance to have a gallop in the ones. Another run against Port won't do him any harm for his lead up to 2013.
Hopefully the big Griff will be right to have another senior run as well.

was at the game and he did 2 or 3 runs up the ground chasing oponents - was impressed by his endeavor and he nearly caught both oponents. another player that will grow in confidence with 30-40games

Just watching the Bombers replay and was about to write this myself. Considering he had over a year to really work on his upper body I think he is in pretty ordinary shape. At various times he looked absolutely spent ( I understand first game back at the level) so I wonder about his tank.

Which begs the question if he hasn't built his tank or his upper body, what has he been working on?
I like Dave and think he has the ability to be a solid 3rd tall either forward or back, but am concerned by what I see.

His pace & athleticism are his biggest drawbacks Tbar.

Because of this reckon the club was pretty weary about him putting on too much weight up top whilst he was out with his knee.

The club has previously reported they let him get too top heavy pre his knee injury as well.

Cheers Leysy, I remember the reports of his added weight hindering him early last year. So from that point of view where does he stand? Unable to bulk, yet average athleticism, but good skill and what appears a smart footy brain.

Where do you think that leaves him? What role is he best suited to? Can we have both he and Jack in the forward line given the question marks on their pace?

Astbury athletic features are similar to Post in a lot of ways. Except Dave has a quick and smart football brain. He can make decisions with the ball quickly, unlike Post, and positions himself better as well.

He's a good lead up CHF option for me and will eventually fill the role Miller played for the last 18 months.
I like his kicking and decision making.
Hopefully he can work on his pace and strength with a big pre-season.
With 2013 being his fourth year I expect improvement.

If not for injuries, I doubt he'd have played this season at all. Big pre-season for him and let's judge on what we see in the first half of 2013.
