David Astbury, Thank You

I hear what your saying Goody about "needing time", "2nd year player" etc etc ............ thats all good and fine, understand that but lets also not forget that Grimes went from a complete unknown when thrown in at the deep end against arguably the toughest forward to contain in football and in no time at all looked completely at home with his role within this team in a matter of a 6 weeks ........... took no time whatsoever to show he wanted to cement a spot, so lets hope this Astbury kid shows the same kind of endeavour that Grimes did and we may just find ourselves another good youngin'.

You could say the same about Astbury last year, slotted in very well early on. The same could happen to Grimes next year (once back from injury), he may find it more difficult. That's the thing, with these youngsters, you're going to get inconsistency and confidence issues. It wouldn't be the first time a player had the 2nd year blues. We gotta give em time and not concern ourselves too early. The main thing for me is that Astbury has shown he has a good footy brain and has generally good disposal skills and is good under pressure. Alot of these attributes you can't really teach, you have them or you don't. Whilst there are no guarantees, I am confident of Astbury's future.

Agree Astbury has a decent footy brain, but from what I've seen it relates more to intuitive forward decisions than man-marking defensive decisions. Concede the latter can improve over time, but the package of potential already appears to be there as a forward - why make a sow's ear out of silk purse?

I know we supporters make a big deal out of what number a player is wearing but for the players it doesnt matter too much. For example, Essendon supporters hate it when Stanton wears number 5 but it doesnt mean to much inside the club. WHile it is symbolic it doesnt create too much pressure

They want to settle him in 1 position for the time being for his development. Their judgement is that it is best for his development if he stays in 1 position.

Key positions fwd and back especially if players such as Gourdis get delisted. We're short now before any delistings. We could do with a 3rd tall type as well.

Fair enough. He's still very young so i guess if/when he does get back in the team and if he happens to struggle again in defence, next year they could try him up forward. No panic stations yet. Should of been selected this week; hopefully comes in very soon.

GO TIGES!!!

See Dave's been named as an emergency this week so he's not far away from a recall. Hopefully starts to put a string of good performances together at Coburg and forces his wayback in.

Some good points raised here. Whether he was played out of position, to his liking, or not, he simply didn't work hard enough in his senior games earlier this season. And I've rarely seen a player look so lost.

Hope he's ok and isn't on the sidelines for too long.

Anyone know how long a knee dislocation usually keeps a player out? Can we expect to see him back this year?

I wonder whether Gourdis gets a game soon...KD stocks running very thin...

Until someone knowledgeable gives us something better this is what I got

Regardless of the treatment option chosen, a rehabilitation program of usually 6–16 weeks will follow.[7] Choosing an appropriate treatment depends on a number of factors, including associated injuries with bone fragments or injuries to the soft tissues around the knee. Also things like the patients age, sports and activities they participate in, level of competition, and time needed to return to work and/or sport participation are all very important factors to consider.

I dislocated a kneecap and It took most of the year to get over but I had a fracture in there and no ice so the swelling was immense – I still couldn't bend my knee after a month. And I'm not a good rehab patient and kept working at a desk when I needed to be doing rehab exercises several times a day.

In contrast Darryn Cresswell dislocated his patella some years ago and either went back on the ground in the same game or perhaps the next week.

So *smile*'s recovery will depend on any collateral damage such as ligaments and damage to the patella. A fracture means immobilisation which means loss of muscle tone but a full-timer can get that back relatively quickly.

Guess the positive to take out if it was that it wasn't something more serious like an ACL.

I am really surprised by how little was said about this injury.
There wasn't a peep about it from the commentators after I put my boot through the telly.

FWIW, according to one of the papers he is out for the year.
i have no idea if that is accurate or not.

Unfortunate. But you know what? I'd rather him miss the rest of the year rather than try and come back this year. Park him in the gym and tell him to lift heavy things, lots of times.

Didn't Ben Stratton do something similar against us? For what it's worth he's out for the year as well.

I know its bad timing and the kid has potential but he appears slow and has no body presence. This injury will prob make him slower and stiffen his development. If a club came knocking with an offer too good to refuse or led to us getting a player we need i would seriously consider it !

Disappointing that he is out for year. Let him be ready for the start of preseason and ready to go... I still believe he will be great for us 2013 and onwards. Next year will be an important year but I believe 2013 will be his career defining year

your right for a tall 20yr old who has had played 20 odd games, he really should be impacting games with his presence!!!!
