David Astbury, Thank You

Astbury is our most prospective key positiont alent in the backline. Is a footballer first and foremost. Needs time that's all. 2nd year player but let's also not forget there's been a distinct lack of experienced backliners helping the youngster out at certain times this year.

We certainly expect a lot from our young key position players. High expectations is good, of course, but should be tempered by recognition that most teenage key position players are really playing at AFL level before their time.

The one thing he hasn't showed is running power, something Rance and Grimes have in spades. Good position player, good overhead, skills neat, but not a real play-on at all costs type.

I dont know who you have been watching, Ashbury cant and hasnt taken a contested mark in the games ive seen, including games at Coburg

Not many contested marks get taken by players. Forwards tend to get quite a few more, their focus being on marking rather than punching. Only 4 players have taken more than 3 contested marks all year, these being Reiwoldt, Vickery, Miller and Deledio. McGuane has 3, Grimes 2, Graham 2, Rance 1, Astbury 0. I am not too concerned about contested marks from Astbury at this stage, he's still very young and needs to build up his body.

Yep amazing now to think how many here had Astbury pencilled in at CHB before the start of the season really.
Still a baby in football terms as a KPP.

Leppa said the club had made the same mistake, due to his maturity an professionalism they keep thinkin his a 5th year player not a 2nd year....good time for him to come back in

Not this little black duck - I recall being derided for not joining the chorus. I still don't even think we can call him a backman yet. His best games (insofar as potential) were up forward for mine.

I gotta admit I was pretty unimpressed by what he offered up in the first few games this season, but it now seems with Grimes done for the year, this kid is the "chosen one".

I hear what your saying Goody about "needing time", "2nd year player" etc etc ............ thats all good and fine, understand that but lets also not forget that Grimes went from a complete unknown when thrown in at the deep end against arguably the toughest forward to contain in football and in no time at all looked completely at home with his role within this team in a matter of a 6 weeks ........... took no time whatsoever to show he wanted to cement a spot, so lets hope this Astbury kid shows the same kind of endeavour that Grimes did and we may just find ourselves another good youngin'.

Astbury will come good.

As several people have mentioned, he appears to be a victim of the extremely high expectations on PRE, and a change in body mass.
Not only is he still a boy, but like Posty has put on a lot of weight in the space of 1 pre-season. This IMO is his biggest problem at the moment and, it will take him (and Post) a bit longer to get back to the levels they showed before the physical transformation took place.

Still think he is a forward and will struggle to ever become a KPD. While he has shown some very nice footy smarts, i just don't think he has the burst required as a key backman in todays game to stay with a forward. Should be developed to present as a CHF or key foward to help Jack out.

PRE expectations vs club expectations...
too different worlds...
Received Richo’s jumper after a season didn’t he? Expectations seem pretty much inline.

Been saying the same thing since the start of the year. Staggers me they (match committee) haven't even entertained the idea of trying Astbury up forward (especially with Griffiths being out). Wasn't he played there as a junior? He even kicked 3 on debut against the Dees playing forward. No harm to at least give him a good block of games up there to see how he goes. Has looked a little slower this year pace-wise which is a bit concerning. I agree with an earlier post in that he doesn't give us any run at all in the back half, unlike Rance & Grimes who defend and have good speed and run from defence. Dave plays it a little safe from what i've seen; opting to chip it sideways too much or kick it long down the line to a contest; which is fine but as a defender you have to be able to run & support a little too. Hopefully as he gets more experience he will be more of a playmaker. Must come in this week.

GO TIGES!!!

12 new players last year and really Martin and Grimes are the pick of the bunch so far, but early days yet.
Good to have the depth of talent so that those who work hard can make it, and some will drop by the wayside.
Depth, depth, depth, makes great teams and we have selected for depth and the future.
I wonder which are the deepest "potholes" requiring filling?

Point taken, but he's a second year player.
To hand him Richo's number is no small gesture - the club really rates him, and expect him to be a player and leader in future. In the second year though?
I don't doubt for a second that David has the maturity and talent to wear the jumper with distinction, but patience is needed here.
He added something like 8 kgs over preseason wasn't it..?
Let him adjust to his heavier frame before he has to cope with the weight of the world on his shoulders.

They want to settle him in 1 position for the time being for his development. Their judgement is that it is best for his development if he stays in 1 position.

Key positions fwd and back especially if players such as Gourdis get delisted. We're short now before any delistings. We could do with a 3rd tall type as well.

Interesting CC. I was definitely concerned that club expectations of David were too high pre season.

For those that mention Grimes, it's a different case as he hasn't been playing on the larger power forwards like DA was asked to.

As we know Astbury struggled early on & his inability to compete physically in the air with the bigger bodied forwards highlighted how undervalued McGuane is in this role.
Luke may well need to be upgraded for us to go the next step but he's still got value on our list this season hence, Dimma keeps picking him despite some of his flaws.
I bagged Muscles a fortnight ago but he played well against the Bombers and will keep his spot for a while one feels given the lack of KPD options.

Most definitely.

Tbh whilst Dave makes good decisions with ball in hand, I don't believe he has the speed or mobility required for Grimes role as the third back.

Could he play on Motlop for example? Not IMO, he'll have rings run around him.

Would prefer to see someone like O'Reilly or Dea in that role and let Astbury hone his aerial craft at Coburg on lesser opponents this season with a view to stepping up as a key back next year.

I think we'll bring in another small this week and try and cover Motlop with Newman.
