David Astbury, Thank You

The return of more experienced defenders will assist his confidence.

Exactly right.

I reckon the plan for Dave this year was to play as a third tall down back with the occasional run up forward.

Circumstances have demanded that he be played as a key back and he has struggled at times. Although IMO he did well on Roughhead, which was no small achievement as we were flogged on the night.

I am not worried about his form, he needs to be played, week in week out.

Was David played as a loose man in defence at times whehn Brown went on the ball. Looked that way on telly, but that's not always an accurate indication.

In the last qrt he chased Dawes near the boundary line away from Collingwoods goal and you just knew Dawes was going to turn left inwards towards goal ( he was hardly going to turn right towards boundary and on his left foot) and Astbury looked soo slow and unaware as Dawes played him easily. Minor I know but worrying. And no, I'm not calling him a dud or anything so settle.

No point questioning him at all at this stage. He just needs plenty of games this year as it will put him in good stead next year and years to come.

so errors like this would be why he needs to get more games into him i'd have thought

DA is doing fine. Get off his back he is 20 playin on the. No. 1 or 2 key Feds atm with our key backs out.
The kid is silk and you could see last night with his foot skills.
He is a natural fwd playin in the backline. Going to take time. Can't believe se of you fickle supporters willing to drop him this early. We've played arguably the best 4 teams in 4 weeks FFS!

I would say he is holding his own without setting the world on fire and much better than Will T or anyone you want to put in right now

with rance and mcguane coming back next week it's time to move astbury forward and drop miller.

The least contributing player donning a guerney at the moment by far.

Know he's young and being given some huge asks thus far this season, but seriously, we'd be better off sticking a Jimmy Jess cardboard cutout on whoever the opposition play at CHF, than this kid at the moment.

I know, I hear and have read all the excuses regarding "key backline players missing", but how does their return make this kid at least look like a footballer who can play at this level of the game ?.........he hasn't been near the ball or involved in a passage of play that was positive for the entire year that I can recall.

If there isn't ONE player at Coburg that can match what Astbury has shown in 4 games this season, then we are in more trouble than I realized and I'd love to be a CHF playing against us in this day and age.

Hell, forget a Jimmy Jess cutout........ I'd settle for a Graham Landy one at the moment.

Which ONE of his TWO kicks helped you reach this conclusion mate ?

"SILK" ...... :headscratch, serious stretch of the imagination in my opinion that one.

But hey, you did get one thing correct ... he is young.

i didnt see astbury get outmarked too often last night, or last week. hopefully he has improved in this area.

The kick on his left douche..... The kid is in fact a kid playin his 12th game or so. When he actually grows into his body and becomes a genuine footballer you will see!! Has more skill than any of our other keys backs with 4-5 years less experience!!!

Not sure what to think about Astbury at CHB.
Looked lost most times last night and struggle to swoop on any loose footy.
But then again, what was Leigh Browns game like?
Could you still say Astbury did an OK job, despite how bad his game appeared?

Some rubbish has been posted on this thread. Astbury will be a very good long term player make no mistake.

I don't mind if he gets a spell for a few weeks, but for us to improve we need to put time into Astbury. No shortcuts.

Douche ?...I asked you a simple question and thats how you decide to answer it ya Tossa ?

Fair enough, the ONE on his left you said ?............so the other was on his right then ? .....whats his natural side ? I've never seen enough of him in a game to even make that call to be honest.

Key backs ?..........that would mean he has better skills than 1 other player then right, seeing as I do believe each team only has 2 "Key backs" dont they ? .....thats a huge feather in his cap then.

"Grow into his body ?"....what the hell does that even mean ? ..... which part outgrew the others and why .. is he taking HGH maybe ?...that isn't a good thing by the way you need to tell him.

"becomes a geniune footballer" ........ again, what does this even mean ? ............is he an imitation, phony or fake one now then ? ... I believe you may have just contradicted yourself there Toss, nevermind though, blind homers and relatives tend to do that in the face of adversity. ;)

I prefer Astbury over Rance for sure, but I prefer McGuane over Astbury.

alot of people are going to eat their words regarding Rance. The graph is heading in the right direction for him and he's a much better player than he was this time last year and is only going to get better. Not only is he a big strong key back who's defensive work has improved big time, he runs the ball out of the back line, lays blocks, tackles hard and runs to provide support. he's not a one trick statue in the back line. walk up start next week.

With Grimes out injured, attention turns to the forgotten Tiger.
DA was a star on the rise last season but unfortunately has hit the 2nd year blues after being handed some big jobs early in the season and coming up short of expectation..
Does he get the chance against Port or will we look at another option?
