David Astbury, Thank You

Why do people keep wanting Astbury to play forward when the club have said over and over that the plan for him is to learn the game down back.

Swinging forward to fill a current gap would be the classic example of taking a shortcut.

I said after the NAB1 double header that Astbury has real issues one on one.

At 19 years old I don't think it's fair to make judgement on this. He is very light still for his height so obviously is going to be pushed out alot whilst he grows into his frame. The most important thing right now is that he has a decent footy brain and is great below his knees. The rest will come with time.

Why was there no one making these comments before the practice match? So he had one bad game, whoopee.

I think Astbury is decent one on one and will obviously get better with experience. I've seen him use his body well plenty of times to outmark an opponent and he's a good spoiler.

I've been saying it since his game at the Gabba against Brisvegus. Was astonished at how easily he was beaten by a relative new comer (Cornelius I think). My next real chance to see him was in the Collingwood/Carlton dinky cup game. He didn't look good down back then either, bombing the ball forward with up and under kicks and generally struggling body to body. Next, only seen the first qtr against Crows, but he looked out sorts there to against Walker.

In context, when allowed the freedom be play loose man in defence he seems to go OK. Up forward was really good early last season. He seems way more creative than defensive.

My knock is as a CHB in 2011 - not as a potential quality player. Too many people have him pencilled in there. I don't see it and think if that is our pathway for 2011, we and he will really struggle.

As FanTango offers up - rather see Astbury being creative at CHF and struggle a bit than trying to be defensive at CHB and stuggling a lot. Miller as a forward - spare me please.

Hope so but he's certainly not there yet Lids. Ideally he'd be in Kel Moore's role this year.

i see so much more in him. where was ben reid in 2008? playing in the vfl and probably switching between forward and back. he is exactly the guy we should be modelling Daves development on because right now he is the best young chb is the game. actually there are bugger all good chb's in the league at all. however, i really rate reid and after watching DA real close and seeing the smarts and use of the body, the way he protects the ball when outnumbered, his neat decision making and skills its pretty obvious he has all the tools to work with. its all there so when you see all of that and that he is genuine 195cm and has a good frame so will put the weight on and also consider how highly rated he is within the club i have no doubt he is destined for big things.

easily best chb in the game in 5 years

Bold post. I tend to agree, reckon he could be a modern day Paul Roos type.

Its not a judgement Goodone , he has a good future . I think what I have said is the same as you . He has a great teacher in leppitsch but as a 19 year old he is getting outbodied. Play him but keep the expectations realistic.

Leppitsch was a fool for so many years it wasn't funny. Matthews sorted him out when he gave him the CHB position and said - it's that or the bush funny man. Let's hope the Lep is not another David King. DA will learn nothing if he is.

Same song book I think.

You may be right but his qualities are clearly there. He's now 92kg. He can handle it with a bit of a chop out here and there from others. He will struggle at times and maybe even cost us games but fast tracking these types of players is invaluable. By the time we're ready to challenge these young players will have 40, 50, 60 games, etc. Same sort of thing with Post, needs to play. Doesn't need Miller there taking his spot and wasting space. Vickery too.

On his position, maybe could experiment with him playing at CHF with Post moving to CHB (position he was drafted as) but I'd rather they leave him to develop at CHB and not throw him around too much.

I don't like spotting weakness in players, especially in the new kids. but Ash struggles to mark balls that are in a pack situation, even when he is perfect position take the mark.
I noticed the other nite he went for 3-4 marks and did not really control any of them, Hopefully he improves in this area,

Apart from Jack who do we have who can take a pack or contested mark ( regularly)? No-one. Watching "Rubber gloves" like Ty, Rance and Gus is cringeing, the ball just bounces off their hands or chests.

I'd persevere with Vickery up front but hopefully Post gets a chance at CHF next week.
Big Grif to return rnd 4 or 5.
Gourdis also pretty good in the air if we're getting desperate up front.

Post has to come in next week.

Griffiths is the key to help our structure. I just cant see why Post cant fill that void until at least Griffiths is ready to play.

Agree fellow Acer. Just having a good big body to present with at CHF makes a world of difference - no coincidence we won games when Griff was there. As we develop some good front and square type players (Helbig looks likely, so does Conca and of course Cotch) we'll benefit enormously.

I would suggest they do not rate Post for the role at CHF.

That is why they went for Miller, as cover for Griffiths.

One thing is for sure, until we get a competitive CHF, we will not have many options moving the ball forward.

In my opinion David has a lot of tools to be a very good player. His body on body work is not a strenght though.

I would play him as our CHF. His style of play would be great as a CHF. He leads far and wide and would be great to play through from the half back line. Has very good kicking skills and composure to set up play also.

I think at the end of the day, I would be more comfortable with a Riewoldt, Griffiths and Astbury as our key forward line. Astbury at CHF, Griffiths and Riewoldt as stay at home forwards.

I think if Kelvin Moore can come back in the team, I would be content with McGuane, Rance and Moore as our "key backs" for now.
