David Astbury, Thank You

Geez even when i post positive commentary you boys cant help yaselves can yas heh heh heh. ;D

I still rate Thursfield highly as a pure defender and as a defensive a stopper , hes the tigers best at it, nothings changed in that regard except he is now branded a dud by many who used to wrap him up cos he doesnt streak out of the backline and rack up 20 kicks a game. Only reason Scarlett does it is because he often doesnt play Full Back with Lonergan and Taylor often playing the key defensive roles. I believe theres still room for one in every side but i hate the way the games gone anyways these days.

Certain we will be better against carlscum,,,with all three tall defenders, and astbury.

they cut us to bits last year for size up forward.

there midfield did too, although we have improve there from round one last year.

What the???
4 tall defenders to take on Garlett, Betts and Yarran? Glad your not a selector! They did have Waite and Henderson but certainly we weren't losing due to a lack of height. We simply weren't good enough.

Russ,

Take a chill pill,,,,my point was that if they go tall,so can we,even if one or two injured, they will prob play kreuzer as extra tall trying to stretch us.

do you remember lids as our number one tall back last time, with gourdis playing his first game,as a second tall, and the irishman as third tall.

we were so flat out trying to cover there talls,we let there smalls cut loose.

was not saying we would play all,,,,more so meant we can easy cover there talls.

and will have newy, conners, king if needed for there smalls

and lids drive, and clean kicking out of defense.

My only real point is we are in much better shape now,and want to kick there ass.

I will admit that I was thinking back to round 1 maybe, but would still be worried about there small forwards before the tall ones

Just read an interview with Dave Astbury from the 'Ararat Advertiser'. He talks about his first year in the AFL, so thought I'd include a summary:

1. He was thrilled & surprised to have played 15 senior games in 2009. Highlight was the come-back Sydney win at the MCG in front of 60,000 people.
2. Settled in well with young group of players....best mates are Alex Rance, Andrew Browne and Jack Riewoldt.
3. Lives in Melbourne with a host family and has started a Civil engineering & Commerce degree at Uni......difficult last year to find the time to get to lectures, but giving it another go this year.
4. Has recovered from a hip arthroscopy done last August. He suffered a few injuries last year.
5. He respects Damien Hardwick and is grateful for the opportunities he has been given at Richmond.

Dave comes across as a well balanced, extremely modest young man who fits in well both socially and as a team member at Richmond.

I look forward to him having a great season in 2011.

Are club expectations going to be too great on DA this year?
Seems like a terrific kid and shows a lot of promise but I just hope we don't knock the kid around too much too soon.
I sense he's going to be given a LOT of responsibility for a youngster in his 2nd season.

Showed alot of responsibility last year. 2nd year is always harder I say. Usually a lot more respect placed on you by the opposition.

I don't think the club will expect too much, but the supporters might.

looks like a quality kid, wouldn't be surprised if he doesn't captain this side in the future.
Great debut season, will grow into a very good player.
