I don't think the club will expect too much, but the supporters might.

Could be right there Streaker.
I notice that almost every single best 22 named by supporters this off season has him slotted in as our starting CHB.
It's a huge ask for a 2nd year player to assume such a role and perform it consistently no matter how much potential he looks to have.
Be amazing if he does well but I'm certainly tapering my expectations.

Completely agree, Oldie. I'm glad we have a young man capable of giving it a go. But we need to expect him to get towelled up a couple of times during the year - and not have us all read into it as some prophecy of doom. Just part of the learning curve.

I remember a young Matty Richardson absolutely pantsing the full-back of the century a couple of times. It happens.

he's 195cm (taller than Nick Riewoldt).......how tall do you think he should be?
Maybe it's that he doesn't play tall, do you think he could go with Nick Riewoldt?
I stress he will be a good player for us but the jury must be out at CHB.

i dont think B4P was suggesting he could match riewoldt, just that he was taller.- in response to you saying he was too short.
clearly he is tall enough to play CHB, whether he is good enough is another question.

I don't get how people have turned on him to an extent. He showed some excellent signs last year as a first year player. He has one very ordinary quarter at CHB and now he is no longer the answer and has serious doubts on him as a CHB?
Perspective people.
Don't get me wrong I am all for being disgusted at our pre-season form and it's lack of showing us anything that is good, but potting the kids and writing them off based on one ordinary game in a crap side playing crap football, is premature and sensationalist.
Guys like Nahas who give their all but seem to make the same fundamental errors, they deserve a bit more scrutiny, but they don't deserve vitriol.
Astbury may suffer from second year blues, he may not, but I hope he does spend a bit of time at CHF this year as versatility in KPP is something we lack severely.

im not sure anyone is really potting astbury, more expressing doubts of his abilities at this stage to hold down a key position in the backline. what the performance against the crows did was remind a few of astbury's weakness, at this stage, of competing one-on-one when the ball is in the air. he struggles. yes fair enough as a 2nd year player, but if he is going to play CHB he either needs to improve quickly , or us fans need to be prepared to see him outmarked regularly this year.

Good post Brodders. Far from potting him I'm just watering down expectation.

Sure there are going to be times he is beaten by his opponent, we need to expect that is going to be the case with guys has age. But he is the exact type that needs to be given continual games in key roles.

Especially in a position where the incumbents have shown they dont posess the all round game to take us forward.

He is going to cop some hidings and get rag dolled from time to time in 2011 but that's fine. Would mean him being held to 17 games for the year.

I am more excited about him with the ball in his hands and being smart with the ball in his hands then his stopping skills. Just need him to contest with any one and bring the ball to ground.

I'm as excited by Astbury as any player on our list Scooper.
As you say he makes vastly better decisions with the footy than any of our other key backs and therefor understand the club's wish to fast track him on that basis but it's a bit unfair yet to have him in the key back role yet IMO and could hinder development rather than help it. Particularly if he gets seriously injured. Going to monitor his progress this year.

Exactly. The boy is 19 but in 2010 he showed amazing composure for a tall youngster. I have no doubt as his experience grows and his body fills out that he will be our long-term CHB. In the meantime he will learn from his trials and tribulations. The guy has tremendous smarts, a footy brain, you can't teach that and it's obvious to see when they do have that skill. I would love to have a Pavlich or Waite type in our team. Here's hoping.

On Astbury's last game the inside 50s were something like 68 to 35. God can't play CHB under that.

And agree, SCOOP and GO, about the lad's talent with the ball. Might get some 2YB but hey, at least he has a footy brain.

For mine, on exposed form, he's far more comfortable using that footy brain up forward than down back. In space he's good, but really struggles one on one from what I've seen. He'll improve for sure, but CHB.....please no.

Why was there no one making these comments before the practice match? So he had one bad game, whoopee.

I think Astbury is decent one on one and will obviously get better with experience. I've seen him use his body well plenty of times to outmark an opponent and he's a good spoiler.

If you can't play CHB you shouldn't be on the park, Phar. He's gotta learn.

(BTW I hope I wasn't outta line with that crack about how easy it is to play CHB. ;D )

I said after the NAB1 double header that Astbury has real issues one on one. He will learn that and hopefully Leppitsch can impart some of his knowledge to him. He is 19 years old and is quite easily out bodied at the moment .
I am all for playing him for 22 games this year but we have to accept he will have some bad days while he is developing .
He is not going to be the AA CHB in 2011 !
