David Astbury, Thank You

Really? We should take it and run if it is on the table.

Good Lord we should. Would be a steal. And then use it on Jade Gresham.

Decent piece of business if we do it. Pleaseant change.

agree. You can't keep every bloody back up player on your list.

Seriously if we don't take pick 21 for Astbury someone needs to be sacked. Give 21 to Carlton for Yarran and it's a win win for everyone

But hang on Zip, don't Carlton need a key back, they could get him in the PSD for nothing unless unless unless........

His no better then Watson. He might not get a game

Take it for Astbury, and then pass it to Blooze for Yarran so they'll have 20 & 21 at the starting point of R2 in draft. No big difference IMO.

Thats crazy. With where he's at at the moment, I was expecting Pick 21 but us having to give them back 31. If we could get 21 by itself we should just say thanks and drive Dave to the airport!!

Age reporting that Brisbane are not interested in giving up 21 for Astbury...

Or 17.

Makes more sense that they don't want to give it up rather than us not wanting to trade for it.

What if it was a 3 way trade including Yarran? If Brisbane and Carlton were considering Pick 21 for Bell and Casboult then the below could work.

Richmond - Give up Astbury plus Pick 31, Gain Yarran
Brisbane - Give up Pick 17 and 57 and gain Bell, Casboult and Astbury
Carlton - Give up Yarran, Bell and Casboult and get back picks 17, 31 and 57.

If they are happy with pick 21, thats worth 878 points, if they get Pick 17, Pick 31 and Pick 57, thats a total of 1960 points, a difference of 935 points which is equivalent to Pick 19-20 for Yarran.

Brisbane would essentially be paying an additional 329 points for Astbury which is equivalent to Pick 46 which may be a touch low for Astbury.

Would probably work for all involved and means we keep the high road and not give up Pick 12 and essentially trade Pick 19-20 for Yarran.

In reply to Poshman's last post - for the mathematically challenged.

Admire your work on this, but don't have my head around this new points system at all.
But don't we then give up a player, a KPB, and a pick (31) for Yarran. So the equivalent of two players in effect? Is that a great deal for us? Is Yaz worth that?

What do you think Astbury's worth?

In terms of his value to our list structure, probably mid/high 20's. So him, plus 31, seem way overs for Yarran.

I have no idea about the points system, so it's only gut feel.

Depends how highly we rate Astbury? Do we reckon he's worth a 2nd / 3rd / 4th rounder. The above trade essentially values him at a mid 3rd which may be a bit unders.

May be able to get an upgrade of our 3rd to Brisbanes, Pick 49 to pick 39 might make it a bit more equal, would value Astbury around Pick 38-40. Ie. end of 2nd / early 3rd.

Some may think this very vague, but I think many on PRE presently are feeling very dismissive of many of our players because of another poor EF performance. Totally understandable, but really good performances during 2015, or earlier are forgotten. With Astbury, we have become very negative. Does anyone know for a fact that the nature of his injuries maens he cannot get back to his best or close, lost his pace for good etc.
What I'm saying is that if he could possibly return to early 2014 form, he would be worth a much lower pick. KPBs are not easy to find; only Elton would be back up left, and is he a sure thing?
Probably prepared to trade him, but feel a mid 3rd too little?

Ashbury did a knee dislocation plus and took a few years to recover and then played 10 ish ripper games
He dislocated a knee again and returned to play a vfl game, all in one season
This year he's marked time, maybe losing ground
BUT he should be significantly better in 2016 when he's regained full confidence
I hope he has a great year and sticks it right up the disbelievers

If we could get Pick 39 back from Brisbane would essentially mean that Brisbane pay circa 24-25 for him so maybe a better solution.

We would pay Pick 31 and Astbury and get back Yarran and Pick 39.

I wonder if Brisbane value Astbury that highly?

Its not that I don't rate Astbury, my main concern is if we want to play him back then I don't understand why he has been playing forward for much of the VFL season when our VFL defense sucks. Reading between the lines suggests the club don't see him competing at that level again. I hope I am wrong and he becomes a ripper, as you say the start he had to the 2014 season was terrific.

It's all very subjective really. How do you normally rank a solid KPP against a good mid or running back. On 2015 form, is Yarran much ahead of Astbury given both had poor years? What's the difference in value on best perceived form e.g. 2014 best games? Not so much if at all perhaps?
It comes down to Yaz looking less injury-prone currently. But that can change.
I suppose what I'm really saying is I had no qualms at throwing anything at Treloar. But not sure if Yarran is a moral to be worth more than Astbury (unless I saw a damning medical report on his legs/knees etc.).
Just don't want it be another Carlsum stitch-up. But Yarran has talent, I know.
