David Astbury, Thank You

I think over-exaggerating but Beanie's being groomed for a forward role. Much of Astbury's development at the Tigers has been as a backman so it's difficult to just transition there in one game. Even Morris was given a pre-season and 3 games before canning the idea. Saying that, I do prefer to see us try Beanie ahead of Astbury in the forward line, just didn't see the point trialling Astbury for one game. May as well had McBean in last week.
Dave's been moved forward for some of the game nearly every game he's played this year. He was so underwhelming at it last week that they moved Chaplin forward and he actually had more success than Astbury.

Is he out of contract at the end of the year?
If so, won't surprise me if he ends up elsewhere.
Signed a 2 year contract from memory at end of last year.

It was stated they were worried that North big forwards might get on top of us and Dave provided a key back option if that happened. To my mind its more evidence that we always rob forward potency to pay other parts of the ground. No surprise we struggle to kick goals.

Hasn't fired a shot in 2014. Not sur eI see a role for him.
Early days though - his form last year before injury wasn't a fluke.
Maybe the Chaplain role down the track - but he's got the ability to play forward too.
Happy to see how he goes for the rest of this year in just trying to re-establish himself.

Unless he helps net a gun mid I'm against trading him.

I think people are forgetting he was in ripping form until he went down mid season.

How long has it been since we've had any decent KP depth. Could replace Chaplin as soon as he's done.

I am not necessarily for trading Astbury but the assumption is that the Lions are into him as it is generally known that leppitsch loves him and they are in desperate need of kpps. I can recall Leppa praising him years ago when he was at Richmond.

Astbury is a different player to Chaplin. he is probably better one on one but Chaplin is good at using the extra to mop up, cutting off opposition kicks etc. My issue with Astbury is that he doesn't get enough of the ball.

I really like Dave. But due to injury history and the fact he is currently surplus to our needs I would be seeing what he can get us at the trade table.

He definitely isn't surplus to needs. What exactly is the plan if Rance gets injured?

We currently have our whole back line fit. And zero backup of one does go down.

Agreed. Astbury does possess some talent, I'd be offering Elton to Brisbane.....if they're interested.

I mentioned on another thread but probably more suited here. If we do lose DA then ex Geelong ( and for a short time ex Essendon) player Mitch Brown maybe a ready made replacement. 196cm swingman now finally over his injuries and playing good footy at Sandringham.

I'd like to keep him, but his lack of mobility is concerning after those leg injuries. Needs to compensate with positioning and reading the ball in flight.

If Brissy offered a top 20 pick that we could use in a trade for Treloar/Motlop/Yarran, I'd bite their hands off though. We still have Elton as a key back backup.

Just on last year's pre-injury form he deserves more time to try and recapture it. He was leading the JD Medal until he went down. You don't lose that form overnight unless the latest injury has caused permament damage.

This. He was looking unbeatable for a while there. His type of injury is a year of rehab and recovery, and some bigger guys take another year just to get the body right and confidence again. But. every player is tradeable for the right deal - not on the table but if Leppa wanted to offer up a double win-win.......?

Not sure if his body is going to stand up to the rigours of afl, so on those grounds I'd say yes if the right trade could be done.
I'd like to know what's happening with Elton though he's not listed as injured, hope he hasn't dropped the bundle after the Magpies game.

Dave's value is somewhere between pick 40-50. KPP with 6 years in the system for 35 games.

Aish's value is somewhere between pick 10-20.

I think you may be under value Dave Astbury's value here,I would say depending on the team that wants him he could be as high as early 2nd rounder
