Damien Hardwick

We had a bad year in 2016 which necessitated a rethink - play a style of game that reflected the skills of the playing group - and it worked. At the moment the game style is not a reflection of the current groups skill set. In 2017 we had a number of intelligent fast and aerobic players with several years of experience playing together. At the moment we have some very dumb, erratic, inexperienced and non aerobic players not suited (at the moment) to our previous game style. Solution is not short term, either change the style or develop/change players. Can Hardwick embrace the need to change?

So we have to develop a game style that suits very dumb, erratic, inexperienced, unfit players? Very interesting, I think I like it. Dimma will have earn't his pay if he can pull that off!

Thought about starting a thread, but then thought better of, about what is wrong and where we go from here. Dimma will come under pressure, and fair enough thats how it works, but for me he's not the core reason and has credit in the bank.

The core reason is the AFLs equalisation policies. Sure there are other factors, but thats what it boils down to. We went all chips in on the 21 draft in an effort to beat the odds. It was a good plan, I liked it and backed it, but for it to work in terms of keeping us in contention we had to over achieve. It looks like we didn't. Right now it looks like we parred it, maybe under achieved.

As for Dimma, this is the first time he's been under extreme pressure since '16, which is a testament to him. Do we give a proven performer who may have gone stale to get us out of the hole, or do we back an unproven coach, who as I posted on another thread, has rough odds of 7 to 1 of success and a 3 year commitment? The next Dimma or the next Mark Nield?
My concern is Dimma will have to do a severe remake of the team for 2024 and it’s 50/50 if he goes on beyond that and if a new coach comes in for 2025 he will have his own version of a rebuild which would mean 2 rebuilds or new version of footy in 2 years.
IMO that’s asking for trouble.

What's scarying me at the moment is that Figgy seems to stay positive with us and refers to us a lot. I don't want him as coach when Dimma leaves.

Geelong recruit elite ball users . Tiges recruit players with average skill and decision makers . Interesting past 2 years you woujd think . And no early draft picks coming up ,

Would have no problem at all with Buckley being our next coach. Had a very good stint at Pies despite not winning a flag. With a few years off to reflect on what he did good/bad he would be IMO a sensational coach 2nd time around.

And they draft kids regardless of their age.
We need besides better kicks. Kids that mark the ball

Been saying it for a while club has dropped the ball and rested on it's moral stopped being ruthless and investing in our football department.

The signs we're there in preseason blind freddy could see it our skills and kicking look unfit etc and our game plan doesn't stack u
McRae & Leppa were clearly more than coaches. All of a sudden Kingsley is building something at GWS. Sometimes in business and sport, the right people have chemistry without trying and culture is formed. Its reformed over time but the energy and natural chemistry that created the culture creates a platform that success naturally comes from. And don’t forget Peggy is gone as well. Huge shift in chemistry around the club. Benny maybe thinking about the AFL job could be having ab impact. Things change.

But who is coming for our current batch of coaches? No one.

Oh I think he is wanting a job..

Our biggest issue at the moment is the list and not the head coach.

Ageing stars, kids not quite up to it, lack of key tall forwards and general poor kicking skills across the group. We also lack speed & link up in the middle of the ground.

Having said that, there is a need to redefine how we want to play now with what we have and how we want to play into the next 3-5 years. Taranto & Hopper have done what they were recruited to do in at least making us a break even team at clearance. Use that as a starting point to define how we want to play.

Reality is season is over , however there’s stil a mild pulse .

like to see Dimma back the kids this week , yes we should pick the best 23 , get the 4 points and prepare for the Cats , however there’s a lot that’s not working , so let’s dig a bit deeper and give some kids a real opportunity on the G next Saturday. What we are doing is not working, we definitely have the excuse of key injuries, however our system shouldn’t kick 4 goals against the Suns indoors .

Another big worry for me is our inability to win close games over the past 2 seasons , 1 we don’t put games away anymore and 2 we just don’t kick the late goals that matter or we let the opposition score.

Maybe Dimma just needs to change the messaging a bit

Also how long since we’ve used the corridor? Our brand atm is so blah
How many more kids can we play? They've been getting opportunities this season. We played 7 yesterday. They're a big reason why we're not playing well.

Why was Sonsie playing wing ??.Kids a inside bull showed last year and now we want to put him on the wing puzzling.

Injuries aside he aren't coaching well preseason looking like miss skill wise , kicking and game plan all over the shop.Chopping and changing of players in positions puzzling moves he shouldn't escape criticism.

Where he went wrong is that he only read Konrad Marshall's first Richmond book, not the subsequent ones. Bucks seems to try too hard to sound intelligent and really is a failed coach. Fly has shown what a real Hardwick disciple could do with the team Bucks had at his disposal.

I say just keep playing them , not so much how many WS , just give them repeat games not in and out
