Damien Hardwick

Dimma to the Suns sounds like a real possibility. They won't go with Dew again after passing on BScott and Clarkson who were both interested last year.

Win for both parties - Dimma needs a new soft pre retirement challenge up in the warmth and we need a new coach for the transition.

Dimma would leave with our everlasting gratitude as a Richmond immortal but it's time.

That would ordinarily make sense for the Suns there Hostile Insect but the problem is the AFL fund and control the Suns and they don’t like Coach Hooch (or Richmond), so it’s hard to see them putting him in there to replace the Big Mountain Dew.

Not that it means much but both Dimma & Dew's contracts are until the end of next season.

I too think we're almost at the point where a fresh look is required despite Hardwick's incredible contribution.

How is this a win for us without a clear candidate to step up for us? Our succession plan left us for GWS and I’m not sure there’s a clear number 1 choice out there atm?
Do we really want to risk an untried newbie?
Ken Hinkley probably the best experienced coach out there that is a known quantity

I seriously doubt Hardwick coaches again after he leaves us whenever that might be.

Our next coach is probably sitting within the Geelong coaching panel.

i think it is a bit early in the season to be pensioning Hardwick off just yet. Kane Cornes probably has, but we should have higher standards here at PRE.

Jeez. Be careful what you wish for. Best coach we've had since Hafey, at least. How'd we go for coaches in the three decades between the two?

Just typical Richmond 37 years in the wilderness talk. There is no bottom out under Hardwick.

I certainly wouldn't be replacing Hardwick. In fact if we have to rebuild, I'd prefer he do it - he did it once and he can do it again.

However, I think he needs to surround himself with the best assistants and development coaches possible. Teague and Rutten are ok in these roles (the latter having played a pivotal role in developing our 2017 backline), but what of the other coaches? We need to find the next McRae and Leppitsch to work with Hardwick.

If Hardwick were to step down, and I do think at this stage, it would be his call, he’d take at least a year off to assess everything. He’s been heavily involved in football from the time started playing until now. He’d want that break, same way Leppa did when he left us.

Hardwick never coached a senior AFL side before us.

No retreads for mine.

No doubt spooker, but every great coach moves on or is moved on eventually.

I have posted on this before.

The idea that we need a fresh look coaching wise is IMO too premature. We are in a transition period regarding the list. But I do believe that there is a lot of promising young players on our list.

People (on here and many footy ‘experts’) calling for change seem to believe that we went all in this year with an ageing list to try and pinch another flag. Exhibit A apparently trading away amongst other things a first round pick for Taranto and Hopper.

The fact that our poor start to the season seems to have ruled us out of a flag chase is seen as a failure. But there are some big assumptions in this position, not the least being that that is what the club thought.

I take a different view. Firstly, I think we are right in the hunt for a finals spot this year. We are a team, even now, that no one really wants to play in a final.

Secondly, while I think the club did try to give itself the best chance of a flag that it could this year, it also has a longer term view that was actually the priority. The recruitment of Taranto and Hopper was about providing a solid midfield platform for moving forward in the next few years with a promising list of young players. Yes we will have some holes to cover and it cost us a first round pick, but the bedrock framework is still there.

Quite frankly, Dimma is in the best couple of coaches in the league at the moment. Coaches with his experience, ability and success rate are rarely available at any time, let alone at the moment. He has a proven track record, at our club for goodness sake, of building a formidably successful team.

I think he remains the best coach for us. If he wants out, then OK, but if he wants to stay, we need to facilitate that. Reinvigoration can come in many forms. If we need it, then go for it but I don’t see that issue being properly addressed by replacing Dimma.

Dimma is in weird territory temporarily. He is fiercely loyal to (and defensive of) those who have made him a great coach.

Martin, Cotchin, Reiwoldt, Grimes, Nankervis, Prestia and a few others are well past premiership-winning fitness and won't be there in 2025. The game is so fast.

So the transition will be on regardless.

These guys have given the club all they had. And they have been superb.

I love that we are respecting the champs, but we are in for some unavoidable short-term pain.

True, but you'd want to be sure of your replacement.

Lambert has only just begun his apprenticeship. We all know he and Grigg have great footy brains. Grigg is a few years into his apprenticeship. He'd still be raw but so was Dimma. I think Grigg's more suited to senior coach than Lambo, who seems an assistant kind of bloke. If it was a rebuild that Dimma didn't want to do...

Taranto and Hopper have been dismal failures at centre square clearances. They don't have the initiative, quick first steps or explosiveness to win the clearances. They either have to improve quickly or ship off to the flank for these contests.

Our best center square clearance players are:

1. Bolton
2. Prestia (sadly out of form)
3. Short
4. Bakes
5. Pickett

Cotchin is cooked and Dusty for all his greatness has never been a center square king either.

The fact none of these players apart from Prestia has spent time in the center square except for fleeting cameos reflects really poorly on our coaches. They are sitting back hoping the *smile* show will get better instead of making it better.
