Curtains for Richo?

Matthew Richardson will be one player that makes FAR more than that via the media once he retires.

A matter of opinion and nothing else. What he has lined up for next year is money in the bank - he'd be a mug for not wanting to play on and we'd be mugs for letting him if it isn't in the best interests of the club. Keep him or delist him - comfortable either way - it's just not his decision to make.

If we are going to bottom out, AGAIN like so many of you believe then what is the reason of retiring Richo now?? Surely the big fella deserves a crack at another season, especially when even though he himself knows it is probably going to be as bleak and miserable season as ever, he still urges to run out in the yellow and black. I am sure he knows that he could end up pulling the pin at round 9 say but he has the desire and passion to train his guts out for another preseason as he always does. There is nothing to be gained by retiring Richo, he and Cuz should be retained, the rest go, wirth an errr against browny but wouldnt be upset to see him go, he is but a shadow of his pre-leg days.

But Richo stays no questions asked, lets start respeting some of the great players of our club even if they dont play in premierships like the did in the 60's and 70's. Gee St kilda admire there former players and only 20 of them have ever one a premiership at their club!!!

Good point.

Maybe a matter of opinion.

But you are mad and foolish to have any opinion otherwise.

You've seen the contracts on the table, you've spoken to his management? Sure he 'might' be able to get something somewhere (the fact that he is a current player gets him a lot of exposure that will of course end with his retirement) - but for a third of a million dollars per year upwards? Hardly likely...Your love affair with Richardson is blinding you - he isn't that stupid, he'll take the money and run, if we let him (and again I'm fine with that if it's in the best interests of the club). Again bottomline is you don't leave it solely to a player to decide when he should retire when he has such a vested financial incentive to continue.

I'm happy enough for Richo to be retired as long as they cull the duds on the list first. If they kept someone like Simmonds on a one year but culled Richo, I'd be fuming.

Some things around the club that require attention according to some posters here:

Money - Richo brings people through the gates, Kids still want a jumper with 12 on the back
Development of kids - They have not shown much since he has been gone, Richo is not the reason they aren't developing
Culture - Richo is not a part of this mediocre culture we hear a lot about, 90% of his dummy spits were about the medicrity of the list. He hates losing and never thinks near enough is good enough
Clean out - We can only realistically move 8-10 (actual number escapes me) each year and there are AT LEAST this number of people who deserve the sars before Richo based on performance alone.

So it probably is in the best interest of the club to keep him on for one more year, but only one more year as we will be looking for another 8-10 and he will most likely be in that number.

The hissy fits and dummy spits are over. Finally we can get on about building a winning team.

Rumour file on 3AW says Cuz and Richo gone. I hope not just because of their age. Richo should be about injuries and Cuz has done nothing wrong this year. Rebuilding takes a few years. I think there are other players to be culled this year before those two (providing Richo is injury-free).

There's plenty who need to go before Richo. I'd like him to be the "goal square" full forward but I had even less hair with his wayward kicking!

where the hell do these rumours come from? I am sure Hardwick has his final plan set out without sitting down and properly evaluating......NOT!

it wouldnt surprise me if DH cleaned the decks. there was a rumour floating around at the start of the process that he intended on doing that if he got the job.

would deff like to keep cuz at the club, as a player. also as a midfield coaching assistant if the club insists on keeping campbell

Age should be a factor. How many players in recent history have played at 35 years old and not have to be nurtured through games and training and remained injury free? I dont think its a matter of 'simply' looking at his age. There are a number of other ramifications at that age.

How many have Richo's physical capabilities?

Hilarious how people say we have to rest our young guys because they are looking "tired" yet Richo manages to cover more ground in a game than most KPP.

When he is no longer able to out train and out play the other KPP you may be onto something.

Can't see how having Richo playing mainly from the goal square (which IMO is not where Jack or Post should play from next year) would do anything but assist their development.

I think Hardwick is the type who could manage Richo better than his predecessors.

in world sport only champions in champion teams - jordan................have the elite status that earns them the right to call their own day. Seriously (for richo), not won a flag, and really not in the top ten players of the last decade in AFL. Emotion is running very high here!!

Yeah shame on Richo not being able to win a flag for us on his own ::)

I've seen some good points raised on various forums on this issue. Hardwick seems to be the type of coach that will be hit or miss - depends if the whole club is behind him or not. If there's still backstabbing, he will be outed before he's even had a chance to settle in. This preseason will tell me whether or not he has full control / if he lives up to his reputation or if he is just a crowd pleaser.

hmm claw believes richo will go around one more time. not because i think he should, but because of list structure and as a means to give the young kpfs a bit of development time at the least with a big body about the place to take the heat.

unfortunately the way the list is its a balancing act.
